Ever wonder what it's like to be with a real man?
~ Hanson intimidating a female victim.

Floyd Hansen is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Paradise". He is a misogynistic serial killer, rapist, and kidnapper who imprisons couples who stay at his motel, forces the male victim to watch while he rapes the woman, and then kills them both and makes their deaths look like car accidents.

He is portrayed by Wil Wheaton.

Early life[]

Hansen's mother died of alcoholism when he was two years old, and his father's second wife was a prostitute who serviced her clients in front of him. He developed both a hatred of women and a sexual fetish for their underwear, and as a teenager broke into women's houses to steal their panties (and presumably wear them). His urges escalated until, in May 2000, he attempted to rape and murder a woman, but was caught and sent to prison. He served seven years in prison before being paroled for good behavior. Soon afterward, his father died and left him Crest Cottages, a motel he owned in rural Nevada.

He committed his first known murder in 2008, raping and murdering a woman and framing Clint Barnes, another recently paroled sex offender whom he had done time with. Eventually, Hansen began killing couples who stopped at the motel, holding them captive and torturing them for hours before beating them to death with a baseball bat. After placing the bodies of his victims in their car, Hansen would park it in the middle of secluded roads with blind curves in the middle of the night, thus ensuring that they would be hit by traveling trucks, making the deaths look like accidents.

In "Paradise"[]

By the time Hansen attracts the attention of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), Hansen has already murdered three couples. The BAU is eventually called in to investigate due to the suspicious circumstances of the "car accidents" that involved couples. Meanwhile, a vacationing married couple, Ian and Abby Corbin, check into Hansen's motel for the night. He has them stay in Cabin Six, where he spies on them through peepholes. In the morning, Hansen serves them breakfast, which puzzles Abby and Ian, who did not order anything. They then realize that something is off, as the meal consists of their favorite foods, which Hansen learned about while spying on them. When they try to leave, Hansen seals them in the cabin. Ian looks into the peephole and Hansen stabs him in the face through the hole with a knife, injuring him. After psychologically tormenting the couple for several hours, Hansen briefly speaks to BAU Supervisory Agent Aaron Hotchner when he stops by, asking questions about the murdered couples. Giving his name as Wayne Dryden and feigning obliviousness, Hansen convinces Hotchner and another prospective guest to leave.

Returning to the cabin, Hansen beats both Ian and Abby unconscious with a baseball bat. Tying Ian to a chair bolted to the floor and Abby to the bed, Hansen forces Ian to watch while he rapes Abby, and before leaving, he tells her that he will be coming back for her.

Sure enough, Hansen returns hours later, taunting Ian for his inability to help his wife while he was raping her. Hansen prepares to rape her again, but Ian breaks free of his bindings and tackles him. Hansen fights him off, however, and beats him within an inch of his life with the bat. Just then, the BAU, having realized that Hansen is the killer they are looking for, break down the door of the motel room. Fleeing through a secret entrance hidden in a vent in the bathroom, Hansen runs into the nearby woods, with Hotchner and fellow BAU Agent Derek Morgan in hot pursuit. Hansen stumbles onto the road and, in a moment of poetic justice, is struck and killed by a passing truck.

Psychological Profile[]

While profiling the killer, the BAU theorizes that he is a white male in his early to mid-thirties who lives in the area, and who has a history of committing violent sexual offenses against women. He probably owns or works the night shift in an off-road hotel or motel, due to all of the victims being vacationers. Due to the brutality of his crimes, they classify the killer as an anger-excitation rapist, someone who derives sexual pleasure from torturing his victims and watching them suffer. Part of the victims' torture is psychological, which is why he kidnaps couples: it excites him to make one partner watch him enforce his power over the other.

Because the female victims suffered more than the men, the BAU believes the killer is a malignant misogynist whose hatred of women probably stems from being physically and psychologically abused as a child by a dominant female. Given this upbringing, he has likely never had a real intimate relationship. He would either change his M.O. or relocate and find his victims somewhere else if he thought the authorities were on to him.

Because he works in the service industry, the killer is most likely forced to deal with a lot of people. He can probably hide his misogyny until he is alone with his female victims. Given the amount of time that he spends with his victims, he requires a great deal of privacy. Taking his victims' underwear and the use of brutal, physical force and extreme violence means that he likely has been arrested for voyeurism, burglary, and maybe attempted rape. He leaves the victims' bodies behind to be hit by trucks; he may be even utilizing an ATV to get away from the accident sites. He is organized and intelligent, seeing as he copied the M.O. of another rapist when he committed his first murder to ensure that the latter would be arrested.

BAU Agent Emily Prentiss theorizes that, for the killer, leaving the bodies of the female victims to be hit by speeding trucks while not wearing any underwear is a final, symbolic act of rape, underlining his hatred and contempt for them.

Trivia[]

  • Hansen is inspired by multiple real-life and fictional criminals:
    • The "Colonial Parkway Killer", an unidentified serial killer of couples along the namesake highway, leaving them to be found dead in their cars.
    • Cary Stayner, a.k.a. "The Yosemite Killer", a serial killer/rapist responsible for murdering women and girls who passed through a lodge he worked at in the aforementioned national park, two who were found dead in a burnt car.
    • The late Richard Ramirez, a.k.a. “The Night Stalker”, a serial killer of couples in their homes with signatures including disturbing items in their house and making noises while hiding, then raping the women before killing the couples.
    • The late Harvey Glatman, a.k.a. “The Lonely Hearts Killer”, a serial killer/rapist of women with a previous arrest and conviction record for underwear theft and rape, escalating to binding, raping, and murdering four women.
    • The late Richard Speck, a misogynistic mass murderer with a previous record of serial rape, escalating to murdering several nursing students in a targeted attack motivated by rape, holding them captive in their dorms, torturing them by beating, and killing all but one of them by various means, including bludgeoning them to death.
    • Mason, the main antagonist of the horror film Vacancy, a hotel manager who works with accomplices to make snuff films out of hotel guests.
