~ Harvey Morell trying to blame his crimes on his accomplice, Caleb Rossmore. |
Harvey Morell, Jr. is the secondary antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "True Genius". He is the former criminal accomplice of serial killer Caleb Rossmore, with whom he murdered a little boy when they were in middle school.
He was portrayed by Finn Wittrock, who also portrayed Dandy Mott in American Horror Story, Cameron Tyler in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and the young Tubal-Cain in Noah.
Biography[]
Early life[]
As adolescents, Morell and Caleb Rossmore were both child prodigies and school outcasts, bonding over their mutual love of chess, true crime books about serial killers, and the exploits of the Zodiac Killer. When they were 15, Morell and Rossmore tortured animals together until they worked up the courage to kidnap, torture, and murder seven-year-old Robbie Shaw, the younger brother of a classmate who had been bullying Morell. They buried the body in Morell's backyard and destroyed his features with sulphuric acid they stole from Morell's father, a chemistry teacher at their school.
Morell and Rossmore started growing apart in high school, after Morell started dating cheerleader Marisa Devon and suddenly became popular. After graduating, Morell became a successful engineer, while Rossmore drifted through a series of menial jobs and remained obsessed with his former friend.
When Morell and Marisa got engaged, they invited Rossmore to the wedding as a gesture, unaware that he had begun killing people using the same M.O. as the Zodiac in an effort to "win back" his old friend and accomplice.
"True Genius"[]
Morell invites Rossmore to his engagement party, and watches uncomfortably as he gives a toast to Morell's "soulmate", knowing that he is talking about himself. Rossmore offers to throw Morell a bachelor party in Las Vegas, but Morell declines, saying he has to work. Marisa takes pity on Rossmore, however, and talks Morell into going.
The night they are to go to Vegas, Rossmore announces a "change of plans" and takes Morell to a secluded spot to play one of their childhood games - pretending to track down the Zodiac by profiling one of his crime scenes. Their game takes them to an abandoned Chinese restaurant, where Rossmore presents a gagged and bound Marisa as Morell's "engagement present", and says they are going to kill her together, just like they killed Robbie.
Horrified, Morell begs Rossmore to let Marisa go, while refusing to take responsibility for Robbie's murder. Just then, Spencer Reid, an agent with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), who have been investigating Caleb's murders, bursts in and tries to arrest them. Morell tries to put the blame for Robbie's murder on Rossmore, but Reid says that, as the more confident and charismatic of the pair, Morell likely instigated the crime, with Rossmore following along just to please him. He then reveals that Morell has been planning to move to China for his job, something he has not told Rossmore. Angered by the betrayal, Rossmore reveals the location of Robbie's body, and Reid arrests them both.
