Joe Mulford is the overarching antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Open Season". Joe is a war veteran and a serial killer of locals and tourists in Boise, Idaho, kidnapping them and releasing them in the Boise National Forest or killing them while they camped there.
Biography[]
Joe served in the military starting when he was 18, but suffered psychotic episodes and was ultimately discharged. He accumulated a record of assault and battery after returning to the U.S. Joe opened a gas station, and his mental illness appears to have been the driving force for his eventual murders of people across the city, stealing their driver's licenses and cars afterwards. He was given custody of his nephews, Paul and John Mulford, and he indoctrinated them into his warped thinking and made them his accomplices. Joe taught Paul and John all sorts of skills on how to hunt, and when Paul was old enough, Joe taught him how to kill so that Paul could take over the family's criminal legacy. Paul, in turn, would teach John for when he would eventually be old enough to kill. Dozens of people were murdered and buried in the national park, to the point the FBI was brought onto the manhunt. The brothers eventually died when Paul was shot by the agents, and Johnny was killed by Bobbi Baird, a woman they kidnapped and who fought back by stabbing Johnny.
