~ Toby Whitewood preparing to kill Holly Riggio. |
Toby Whitewood is the secondary antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "The Apprenticeship". He is a psychopathic teenager who is the submissive killing partner of serial killer David Roy Turner, his "mentor" in serial murder.
He was portayed by Harrison Thomas.
Biography[]
Early life[]
In 2009, 12-year-old Toby and his older sister were kidnapped by an unidentified man who made him watch while he raped, tortured, and murdered her. Toby did not try to escape, however, because he was sexually aroused by watching his sister die. Toby was rescued, but his parents saw him for what he was - a sociopath who took sadistic pleasure in the suffering of others. One year later, his father walked out on the family.
Toby started torturing and killing his neighbors' dogs, attracting the attention of sex offender and serial killer David Roy Turner, who had been seeking a "protégé" in murder. Toby was attacked by another teenager, José Aguilar, while torturing a dog, and Turner, who had been following him, came to his defense by attacking Aguilar with a hammer. Turner became a mentor and father figure to Toby, teaching him how to be a careful, efficient murderer the same way his own "mentor", serial killer Rudy Stein, had when they were in prison together. While Toby could tell that Turner wanted him sexually, he became his willing student, eager to learn how to kill and get away with it.
"The Apprenticeship"[]
Turner sends Toby to a crime-ridden neighborhood to kill his first human victim, prostitute Amanda Lopez. Toby awkwardly approaches her and agrees to pay her for sex. He then bludgeons her with a hammer before suffocating her to death with a plastic bag, just as Turner had instructed him. He is hurried and sloppy in his first kill, however, so Turner, who had recorded the murder, texts him pictures of the murder with threatening messages in order to show him how easily he could have been caught.
Turner assures Toby that he will get better at killing in time. Later that night, he takes Toby with him when he kills another prostitute, Vicky Thomas, giving him blow-by-blow instructions as he does it. Finally, they murder prostitute Shawna Radford together.
The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) investigates the murders, and gradually realize that there are two killers, one young and inexperienced, the other middle-aged and acting as a kind of teacher/mentor figure. They research older violent sex offenders and teenagers with records of animal abuse, and eventually find both Turner and Toby, believing them to be the killers.
Meanwhile, Toby is fired from his after-school job at a pet store for chronic lateness and an unspecified "incident" with a litter of puppies. Enraged, Toby kidnaps his manager, Holly Riggio, and brings her to the shipyard where Turner keeps his boat, hoping to impress his mentor. Turner instead berates him for kidnapping someone who could be so easily connected to him and says he will kill her by himself to punish Toby for his recklessness. Angry, Toby calls Turner out for his sexual perversion, provoking Turner to call him a loser and a waste of his time. Toby attacks Turner and chokes him until he believes he is dead before turning his attention to Holly.
Just as Toby is about to kill Holly, however, Turner regains consciousness, sneaks up behind him, and chokes him to death. Moments later, the BAU try to arrest Turner, having deduced where he and Toby were after looking into Turner's property records and interviewing Toby's mother Claire, who is horrified, but not surprised, to learn that her son is a killer. Turner then commits suicide by cop by attacking Agent Derek Morgan, who is forced to shoot him dead.

Trivia[]
- Toby is inspired by multiple real-life criminals:
- Chander Matta, a teenage serial killer of women in prostitution in the D.C. area with the use of plastic bags as murder weapons, shortly before the murders of Darryl Donnell Turner, the inspiration for Turner.
- Lee Boyd Malvo, one of the "Beltway Snipers" and the teenage accomplice of mastermind John Allen Muhammad. Both were mentioned by Reid as a comparison.
- The accomplices of pedophile and serial killer/rapist Dean Corll, including Elmer Wayne Henley, who shot Corll dead when Henley was done with the killings and wanting to save a brother and sister.
- Roy Norris, one of the two “Toolbox Killers” along with Lawrence Bittaker, a duo of rapists and murderers with a partnership of kidnapping and torturing women and girls to death, often collaborating in the same violence during the brutality.
- Jesse Pomeroy, a.k.a. "The Boston Boy Fiend", a teenage sociopath and child killer with a similarly absent father and history of torturing animals.
- Todd Bowden, the protagonist villain of the novella and subsequent film Apt Pupil, a sadistic and manipulative teenager who makes fugitive war criminal Kurt Dussander tell of his crimes, before both commit murders to get the burden of their respective crimes and secrets out of their systems.
