~ Hugh Rollins begging BAU agent David Rossi not to send him to prison. |
Hugh Rollins is the secondary antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "A Shade of Gray". He is a child molester and murderer who is framed for the murder of a young boy.
He was portrayed by John Billingsley, who also portrayed George Marks in Cold Case.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Rollins grew up in a series of foster homes in Delaware, and as a young man committed several petty crimes, such as burglary, theft, and vandalism.
He is also a pedophile who is obsessed with young boys. A few years prior to the episode he was incarcerated for two years for an unspecified sex offense - presumably child molestation and/or possession of child pornography - and put on the sex offender registry. Upon his release from prison, he kidnapped, raped, and murdered two boys, ages 11 and nine, within months of each other. He disposed of both of their bodies in the woods near his house.
"A Shade of Gray"[]
When a seven-year-old boy named Kyle Murphy is found dead in the woods, suspicion immediately falls on Rollins. Agents from the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) search his house and find child pornography and children's toys hidden in his closet. Rollins comes home from work to find the BAU in his house and tries to run away, but Agent Derek Morgan tackles and arrests him.
The agents of the BAU take Rollins to the local police precinct to interrogate him. They find that there is more than enough evidence to convict Rollins of raping and murdering the two other boys, but little to connect him to Kyle's murder.
To scare Rollins into talking, Supervisory Agent David Rossi tells him he will be sent to a state prison, where the other prisoners will likely kill him. Terrified, Rollins promises to tell Rossi where Kyle's body is, on the condition that he be sent to a federal prison with better conditions and security. When Supervisory Agent Aaron Hotchner tentatively agrees, Rollins says he threw Kyle's body into the Delaware River, revealing to both Rossi and Hotchner that he is lying.
Rossi and Hotchner leave Rollins alone to stew in his fear. Finally, Rossi confronts him with the actual found location of Kyle's body and threatens him with state prison unless he tells the truth. Rollins gives up and admits that he did not kill Kyle, whom he says is "too young" for him. (It is later revealed that the killer is, in fact, Kyle's older brother Danny.) Rollins is then presumably sent to a federal prison, per his agreement with Rossi.
Trivia[]
- Rollins is inspired by two real-life criminals:
- Gary Schafer, the prime suspect in the rapes and murders of three girls in his community that sent then all into terror until he was arrested.
- Peter Woodcock, a Canadian teenage serial killer and pedophile with a history of fosterhome placement, killing children, most boys, after kidnapping and sexually assaulting them, leaving them dead in forests.
