~ Patrick Meyers justifying trying to kill Tom Barton. |
Patrick Meyers is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Nameless, Faceless". He is a stalker and murderer who is on a mission to kill the surgeon he blames for his son's death.
He was portrayed by Michael Adler.
Biography[]
Meyers' 18-year-old son Jason was in a serious car accident, suffering catastrophic brain damage. The hospital's chief surgeon, Tom Barton, refused to operate on Jason, reasoning that the boy was effectively brain dead. Meyers nevertheless kept Jason on life support until the rest of his family overruled him and had Jason's feeding tube removed. Meyers blamed Barton for Jason's death, and became obsessed with destroying Barton's life the same way he felt Barton had destroyed his.
Three days after Jason's death, Meyers sent Barton an anonymous death threat, promising that he would kill someone everyday until finally killing Barton's 15-year-old son, Jeffrey. He signed the note "LC", a medical abbreviation for "living children".
"Nameless, Faceless"[]
Meyers begins his killing spree by gunning down Hector Ledezma, the other person involved in the accident, who had survived with only minor injuries. The following day, Meyers shoots Nelson Martinez, another middle-aged Hispanic man who lived in the same area, near the site of the accident. Local police connect the murders to the death threat against Barton, and ask the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) for help in profiling and apprehending the killer.
The BAU profiles the killer as the grieving father of one of Barton's patients who died during surgery. Agents Emily Prentiss and Spencer Reid theorize that the other victims are surrogates for Barton himself, as well as a way for the killer to build up his courage to killing the person Barton loves most, before finally killing Barton, and himself. Technical analyst Penelope Garcia researches Barton's recently deceased patients and cross-references them with reports of complaints from family members, and finds Meyers.
Sure enough, Meyers attacks Barton as he is about to pick up Jeffrey from school, intent on killing them both before committing suicide-by-cop. Reid throws himself in front of Barton just as Meyers fires at him, suffering a minor bullet wound to the leg in the process. Reid then tries to reason with Meyers that Jason's death was not Barton's fault, but Meyers refuses to listen and takes aim at Barton once again. Reid shoots Meyers in the stomach, and Barton keeps him alive until the paramedics arrive. Meyers survives, and is imprisoned for murder and stalking.
Trivia[]
- Meyers is partly inspired by George Metesky, a.k.a. "The Mad Bomber", a serial bomber in New York City motivated by revenge against his former employers after they fired him and denied him compensation for medical problems from the job. Metesky also left a two-initial calling card, "FP", which stands for "Fair Play".
