Stephanie Carter is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Sick and Evil". Carter is an insane serial killer who murders several women because she believes she is "saving" them from the houses they live in, which were rumored to be haunted.
She was portrayed by Jamie Anne Allman.
Biography[]
Carter was born with mental illness and was bullied in school until she finally fought back, beating and cutting one of her tormentors so severely that the child was hospitalized. She was committed to psychiatric care, but excessive drug prescription exacerbated her mental health decline. Defying odds, she reacclimated to society even after being off prescriptions, but it is implied she suffered paranoid delusions and visions involving ghosts and the paranormal.
As an adult, she became a college professor, specializing in the paranormal, tracking the haunted houses of her hometown. She married a man named Patrick, who shared her passion for parapsychology and is implied to have had psychological problems of his own. Their shared psychosis came to a head when one or both of them believed Patrick was possessed, tying the delusions to a house where an entire family was stabbed to death. Carter either snapped or was encouraged by Patrick to stab him 22 times, as many times as each of the murdered family members, as a means of "saving" him. She kept Patrick's decaying corpse in his house, but Carter finally spiraled under the psychotic obsession various women in haunted houses were also "possessed" and she was going to "save" them. Patrick was a recurring hallucination that commanded her to kill.
Shortly before the events of the episode, Carter, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and a black-and-white mask, broke into the homes of several women living alone, tying each of them to their beds and killing them by stabbing them 22 stab times in their abdomens. To "cleanse" and "purify" the homes, she burned sage and leaves salt in the corners of various rooms.
"Sick and Evil"[]
The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is called in by local police after Carter murders Linda Stahl and Kim Reynolds. She later murdered Brad Davis and his wife, Carly. Carter then kills Natasha Thompson but spares her daughter, Michelle.
The BAU briefly suspects Courtney Mably, one of Carter's students who followed the murders, because she had broken into the house and found Natasha dead. She is eventually cleared, however, and the BAU team deduces that Courtney ran in the same circles as the killer, which leads to Carter based on her profile.
Carter comes to believe that Courtney must be "saved" next, so Carter brings her back to the family massacre. Carter corrects Courtney about the number of stab wounds inflicted on each family member, revealing her guilt. She then goes into the bedroom alone, believing she is speaking to Patrick's ghost, who tells her to kill Courtney. She attacks Courtney when she enters, revealing Patrick's corpse on the floor. Carter punched her out and tied her to the bed, Patrick's hallucination going Carter to start stabbing. Just as she is about to kill Courtney, BAU Supervisory Agent David Rossi, who interrogated and later bonded with Courtney, shot Carter dead to stop her.
Trivia[]
- Carter is inspired by two real-life criminals:
- The late Joseph Baldi, a.k.a. "The Queens Creeper", a serial killer of women and girls in New York City who suffered from severe psychosis and had an M.O. of breaking into their homes and stabbing them to death.
- Sylvia Seegrist, a woman with schizophrenia and a history with the police who committed a mass shooting in a local shopping mall, killing three people and injuring several others.
