“ | I'm not going to kill you. My wife is. | „ |
~ Song to Jeremy Moy |
Roger Song is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Evolution episode "Piranha". Song is a psychotic serial killer of Asian-American men in Bethesda, Maryland, out of his delusions as a result witnessing the traumatic deaths of his wife Emma and their baby from childbirth.
He's portrayed by Aaron Yoo
Biography[]
Song is the emotionally abusive, domineering widower of of a woman named Emma, who he wanted to exploit for the purposes of having children for him and making her a housewife. Song was infertile, so he forced Emma to try in vitro fertilization and accept and sperm donation. Dr. Maria Moreno recognized the dangerous home situation Emma was in, so she tried to advocate for Emma against the procedure, as Emma suffered hypertension, and she and any child she'd have could be dangerous ill or dead from complications. Dr. Moreon insisted Emma at the very least deliver her eventually conceived son at a hospital. Song was too desperate and stubborn, so he made Emma get the procedure and give birth at home. It went horrifically awry as Dr. Moreno anticipated, as Emma and her son bled to death in front of Song.
Song suffered a break from reality as a consequence of his trauma. It began with him keeping the corpses of Emma and the baby in the house, treating them as if they were still alive and hallucinating them as such. Song coddled his son's corpse, while he spoke to Emma's corpse as he did when she waa alive, typically terrorizing, but additionally fidgety and apprehensive when her hallucination lived with daily trauma. In his delusional complexes, Song believed Emma was gang-raped and impregnated with the baby, which he was to avenge her for to offer her a chance at recovery and make her the mother he wanted. The delusion with topped off by Song believing the fictitious rapists looked like him, as he struggled to admit he blamed himself for Emma and their baby's deaths, in part due to his narcissistic complexes of wanting a donor resembling himself. From this, Song sought to kill donors at the clinic resembling himself in the hopes his psychosis might becime less volatile. To that end, he constructed a glass clamber with a shower head over it and a drain attached to the floor of the box. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid, known as "piranha solution", would pour from the piping into the box, meant to dissove whoever was captive alive and painfully, slowly to torture them for information, then emptying the full solution to corrode them away and flush them out through the drainage system. Each targeted victim in the sperm banks would receive an anonymous email, where Song would blame them shortly before he was to kidnap them.
Starting with passive means to kidnap Asian men in the city, Song roofied Alan George and Tony Moon, held each them captive in the cell, and when they did give the answers Song wanted, he killed them. He then repeated this with Craig Park, who was more receptive to Song's interrogation just to appease Song with the answers he wanted for Craig to save his own life, but Song still murdered him anyway. Roger hallucinated the next day waking up to not disturb Emma, them feeding his son from a bottle. He then fell asleep with the baby in his arms, then woke up again. After climbing back into bed and holding the dead Emma's hand, he hallucinated her still struggling to recover. Song promised to find one more man to kill, asking her to be the devoted mother he wanted of her, to which Emma's hallucination said she'd try. To this end, Song found Jeremy Moy, who unlike the other donors Song stalked and killed, was gay and engaged to be married. Song approached him and asked if he knew Emma, not accepting Jeremy being confused. Asking to show Jeremy something in his car, he then slammed Jeremy's head in the door. When Jeremy pleaded for his life, Song said it was Emma who would kill him, before continuing to slam the door on Jeremy until he was knocked out. This time, Song brought Emma's corpse to be facing Jeremy when he woke up, which Jeremy vomited from. When Emma's hallucination called that a "confession", Song killed Jeremy as well.
The Behavioral Analysis Unit realized Song's motives when the email to Jeremy they found was "You raped Emma, and you know it.", fulling understanding Song was both out for blood and delusional. When they considered his activities to find a sperm donor, they knew he was the killer since he and Emma going off the grid matched the timeline of the murders. By this point, Song hallucinated Emma was having complications of violent hemorrhaging, so he sought to kidnap Dr. Moreno. He made Emma's corpse take the baby, and when Emma protested out of terror she didn't want to die and couldn't bond with her baby yet, Song yelled at her to be a parent and he wouldn't take no for an answer. Emma tried to appease him by agreeing and saying she lovsd him, before he left and knocked out Dr. Moreno to snatch her. She was placed in the glass box, this time not threatened with the piranha solution. Song frantically pushed Dr. Moreno to tell gik what to do, while he hallucinated Emma's screams. Dr. Moreno, none the wiser to the truth, told Song to take Emma to a hospital, but Song refused. This made Dr. Moreno criticize Song for his need for dominance ultimately endangering his family, bringing up the health risks she saw early on and mentioning the case of his abuse was something she was all too familiar with in her clinic. When Song shouted up to a dead Emma again, she didn't know who he was talking to, finally implying his psychotic breakdown. She did, however, hear police sirens and responders telling him through a megaphone to surrender. Song went outside, gave himself up, and tried to get officers inside, but as he was arrested and Dr. Moreno was rescued, the agents smelling decay in the house finally revealed Emma and the baby were dead. Song still couldn't handle it, as he told Agent Luke Alvez to tell Emma he loved her and the boy was hungry. He was presumably institutionalized due to his legal incompetence from his crimes.
Trivia[]
- Song is inspired by multiple real-life criminals:
- Muhammad Atif Syed, a serial killer of men in the local Muslim communities in Albuquerque, which were often feared to be racially or religiously motivated.
- Jeffrey Dahmer, a.k.a. "The Milwaukee Cannibal", a serial killer/rapist of black and Asian men and boys he picked up in the local way community. He tortured and killed the men while they were drugged, then stored their remains in barrels of acid.
