The Manner Street Killer (so named for Fandom) is the overarching antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode “Spectator Showing”. The killer is a serial murderer of boarders in his home in Montreal, Canada, whose crimes preceded that of the son of the last person he killed, Shelby Mattson.
Biography[]
The killer rented his home on Manner Street out to people who needed some place to live. What no residents would know until it’s too late is that the homeowner would kill them and take their checks to cash them, keeping their remains in the home’s basement. The eighth and last person killed is a woman named Audrey Mattson, who escaped to Canada with Shelby to evade her abusive ex, Karl Blair. The authorities arrived to arrest the killer, and the killer blew up the house and the remains of every victim in a suicide. The site of the blast became a tourist attraction, and Shelby, grief-stricken by not saving his mother and horrified by how her murder was commercialized, left flowers at the sight in her memory. A tour group saw attacks on them with letter bombs disguised as scrapbooks, in the same fashion as the killer’s suicide. Shelby is revealed to have targeted them all after they returned to the states, as a woman named Laura Kirkland step on the flowers for Audrey, and he finally snapped. Shelby was killed before he could set off another bomb for a murder-suicide involving Laura and federal agents.
Trivia[]
- The killer is inspired by multiple real-life criminals:
- Dorothea Puente, a.k.a. “The Death House Landlady”, an elderly serial killer of senior citizens she boarded simply in the interest of robbing them.
- The unidentified "Edgecombe County Serial Killer", a serial killer of multiple women of color in North Carolina, the eighth murdered women being the sister of eventual serial killer Robert Smallwood.
