Biography[]
Background[]
Garrity was a long-time far-right conspiracy theorist, which took a toll on his personal life. A fishery employee, his endeavors for finding cover-ups resulted in his ex-wife Sheila leaving him, taking out a restraining order, and telling him before their split to remind himself to not look for answers that aren't there. He was previously the next door neighbor of BAU Agent Emily Prentiss, who found him overall weird down to walking his cat outside on a leash. Garrity in turn, knowing Prentiss worked for the FBI, suspected so many various theories about her work that he followed, particularly stalked, her activities. When Garrity found out Prentiss faked her death to escape crime lord Ian Doyle, he prepared a lawsuit for information he believed the FBI was hiding.
On Criminal Minds[]
In the final season, Prentiss was served with the lawsuit, which baffled and exasperated her, but she was confident she could deal with Garrity. She went back to her office to find Garrity, in front of her desk, with a poster board diorama to argue his case; he had already annoyed the vast majority of the staff. Prentiss tried to reason with him, even trying to expressly tell him one conspiracy theory that wasn't real that he was experiencing was electronic harassment. Garrity was nearly convinced, but he then brought up Prentiss faking her death. She couldn't easily and outwordly explain the operation, but when Prentiss saw Garrity checking out Agent Tara Lewis, she saw an easy way out. She pleaded with Lewis, who Prentiss knew Garrity saw as confident a personality as Sheila, to appeal to Garrity and get him to leave. Lewis successfully convinced Garrity to drop the lawsuit, then referred him to one of her colleagues who was involved with intelligence and public relations. As burned out as the unit was from his presence, he was delighted to get the referral.
On Evolution[]
Garrity returned when he posted anonymous videos challenging the assassination of FBI Deputy Director Doug Bailey, the posts being traced to his computer. Prentiss agreed to meet Garrity in a D.C. parking garage and privately speak with him. He was ecstatic he may have been closing in on something, but Prentiss insisted he pull back from his campaign for the respect of Bailey's family. He agreed, and they discussed his former marriage, his upcoming book, and how he still takes Sheila's advice after their divorce. Garrity later called Prentiss, saying he found more information and to meet her at the garage again, Prentiss terrified he'd be in danger. Her suspicions were confirmed when he stopped three men from beating him. But when police arrived, he surprised Prentiss by falsely accusing her, and he got her arrested and booked, which disgraced her publicly. The charges were later dropped, and Garrity called her later, revealing he was looking into her investigation into the Gold Star Killers, and his sources promised him information if and only if Prentiss' prestige and credibility was threatened. Prentiss was through with Garrity's cavalier efforts and had Tyler Green speak with police in the Western U.S., detain Garrity, and extradite him to D.C. Garrity bitterly recited his name and demanded a lawyer like a prisoner of war, until Prentiss inquired about what he knew. He refused to budge, admitting to nothing and alleging she may have been the crazy one. As he couldn't be jailed, the FBI released, but he warned Prentiss "Teresa is in danger". They found out Green's ex-girlfriend, Teresa Campos, was being stalked, which was part of the harassment campaign against the BAU by Frank Church, the military contractor behind the murders. Garrity was duped by him as part of Church's political failsafes to stop the investigation.
