~ Giuseppe Montolo cursing Derek Morgan.

Giuseppe Montolo is the secondary antagonist of Season 11 of Criminal Minds, serving the main antagonist of its premiere "The Job", a minor character in "Target Rich", and the overarching antagonist of "Derek", "The Sandman", and "A Beautiful Disaster".

He is an assassin and a member of a powerful crime family, and who begins killing the former clients who put a hit out on him that resulted in his disfigurement. He is imprisoned after being arrested by the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) and is eventually murdered by a fellow assassin.

He was portrayed by Robert Neary.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Montolo's father, Chazz, is one of the most powerful mafia bosses in Europe. His mother Rosemary died of cancer when he was a child, and he was sent to live with relatives in Italy, his father having little interest in raising a child on his own. When Montolo was a young man, his older brother Marco, their father's favorite and heir apparent, was murdered by a rival family, and Chazz brought him back from Italy to join the "family business" as an assassin.

Montolo contracted most of his work through the dark web, joining a shadowy online network of assassins called "the Dirty Dozen", and quickly established himself as the most ruthless, brutal, and efficient member; he was nicknamed "the Ghost" because of his natural ability to kill quickly and brutally from seemingly out of nowhere, and leave no trace of evidence behind.

In 2015, he accepted a contract from mechanic Al Eisenmund to kill Eisenmund's fiancee. When Eisenmund discovered that Montolo was watching him, however, he panicked and hired another assassin to kill him. This assassin attacked Montolo in Atlantic City, New Jersey, shooting him in the face. Montolo survived, but he was so badly disfigured that he could no longer open his mouth, leaving him dependent upon an intravenous feeding tube. Obsessed with getting revenge, Montolo began systematically tracking down and murdering his former clients, in the hopes of finding and killing the one who put the hit out on him. He received help and shelter from Betty Wilson, a former client who had hired him to kill the drug dealer who got her addicted to opiates and raped her, and her husband, Phil.

"The Job"[]

Montolo kills his former clients Ted Osborn and William Forrest by injecting them with a lethal amount of the solution he ingests, giving them fatal heart attacks. He rendezvouses with Wilson, who gives him information on his next target, Brian Taylor, and changes his feeding tube. Upon finding Taylor, Montolo ties him up and interrogates him with written notes asking him who ordered the hit on him. When Taylor replies that he does not know, Montolo writes that he believes him, and then kills him and paints a face mask on him post-mortem based on an inversion of the pulcinella (an Italian clown archetype) as a reference to his inability to speak.

He goes to Eisenmund's auto body shop intending to kill him, but Phil sends him a text message to abort the mission at the last minute. Intent on getting his revenge, Montolo sprays Eisenmund's hands with a bonding agent and puts an explosive device in his hands before fleeing the scene with Betty's help. The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), who have been investigating Montolo's murders, arrive moments later and save Eisenmund's life, and find out about the hit placed on Montolo.

After arresting Eisenmund, the BAU finds the online network of assassins Montolo belongs to, thanks to technical analyst Penelope Garcia. Agent Tara Lewis sets up a trap for Montolo by setting up a false phone line that leads back to the BAU network, and calling Montolo pretending to be Betty, thereby revealing his location. Suspecting Phil of setting him up, Montolo tries to kill him, but Phil shoots at him with a concealed handgun. Montolo tries to flee, but BAU Agent Derek Morgan gives chase, shoots and wounds him, and subdues him.

Morgan visits Montolo in the hospital and interrogates him about his next intended targets. Montolo writes, "the Dirty Dozen", and rips out his own stitches so he can open his mouth to scream at Morgan that he will never stop them.

"Target Rich"[]

Montolo is found guilty of multiple murders and incarcerated for life in a supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. Morgan visits him in his cell to interrogate him further about the hitman network, offering to arrange a deal with him to get a more lenient sentence if his information leads to arrests and convictions. Montolo appears to accept the deal, telling Morgan that there are four other assassins in the network. Morgan asks for their names, but before he can provide them, Montolo starts coughing violently before finally collapsing. A prison medic tries to revive him, but Montolo is dead by the time he is taken to the prison infirmary.

It is later revealed that Montolo was poisoned by a corrupt prison guard working for Dozens member Zac Rubenis.

Trivia[]

  • Montolo is inspired by multiple real-life hitmen:
    • John Childs, a British freelance serial killer hitman who gave up his various employers in confessions once in police custody.
    • Glennon Engleman, a.k.a. "The Dentist", an American freelance serial killer hitman with a varied M.O. for murders, including explosion, which were for life insurance benefits his employers would split with him as payment.
