Chaos Island (カオス島 Kaosu-tō?) is the third Open-Zone area in Sonic Frontiers.

Description[]

Chaos Island is a rocky island located high in the sky, well above the cloud layer. Like the rest of the Starfall Islands, it contains multiple ancient ruins, as well lava, gray skies and a volcano. This island is also scattered across multiple smaller islands, which the player can reach using Eagles or Grind Rails.

Chaos Island also contains patches of dead trees and moss, suggesting a once verdant landscape. Although much of Chaos Island is volcanic and lava flows freely, higher elevations give way to snow and the tops of several mountains on the island are frozen over. Ruins and technology left by the Ancients are also hold by Chaos Island, such as gateways to another dimension, machines used by the alien race to defend themselves from The End and bridges.

Similarly to the previous two islands, the only inhabitants of Chaos Island are the Kocos, the enemies/Guardians/Knight.

History[]

Past[]

Before The End attacked the Earth, Chaos Island used to be an alpine forest, being turned into a volcanic wasteland when the entity attacked the planet's crust.[1] One notable Ancient, the apprentice of their top pilot, was tasked with repairing one of the cannons, only to end up disappointed, as their hero didn't showed up.[2]

Sonic Frontiers[]

Before the events of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic, Tails and Amy Rose embarked on a journey to the Starfall Islands. Presumably, after the three were trapped in Cyber Space, Sage set up a Cyber Cage on Chaos Island for Tails.

After destroying the Wyvern on Ares Island, Super Sonic left the sand-scarred island in order to find the third Titan. However, on this island, he was yet again taken down by lasers, having to find the Chaos Emeralds for the third time. Sonic later found Tails, being further corrupted with Cyber energy when he frees him. While the latter was worried about his condition, Sonic was more focused on finding the Emeralds. Later, after claiming the blue Chaos Emerald, Sage summoned the third Titan, Knight. Using a nearby Squid, Sonic was able to escape the Titan.

At some point after the encounter, Tails found an Assault-model Death Egg Robot, alongside a remote control panel, which was still online. Sonic decides to use the control panel, which ended up with the Badnik launching a laser, thus revealing an underground passage to another small island. There Tails introduced Sonic to a Koco who was the apprentice to the Ancients' top pilot, who needed to gather Machine parts for their cannon. Even though the three managed to complete the weapon, their hero didn't arrive, worrying the Koco. Tails compared the situation to how he couldn't handle Infinite's attack, which concerned Sonic.

Meanwhile, in Cyber Space, Sage informed Dr. Eggman that the most optimal way of escaping the digital dimension would be by creating an alliance with Sonic. However, Eggman refused despite Sage's reminders of his past alliances with the blue blur, and demanded another option. Sometime later, Sage saved Eggman from GUN military craft, earning Eggman's pride in her as his creation.

In the real world, Tails asked Sonic if he was a burden to him, telling him that every time there is a crisis, he's either running away or standing on the sidelines. Sonic reminded Tails of his past accomplishments, such as saving Station Square from Eggman's missile, breaking him out of prison and saving him from the Deadly Six's trap. The Koco then alerted the two that the bridge was out; upon the bridge's reparation, the Koco found peace and ascended. Later, Tails informed Sonic that, once everything was settled, he would be going on his own and grow into his full potential; although somewhat wistful over Tails' newfound maturity, Sonic greatly approved of his decision. Their conversation was overheard by Sage, who tearfully envied the pair's friendship as a familial bond she desired with Eggman, and began to truly regret Sonic's inevitable demise.

Later, Tails studied an Ancient gate, which he theorized would react to Sonic's cyber-energy. Once the gate was opened, the blue hedgehog found a Pinball machine behind it. After scoring 5,000,000 points, an eruption was triggered, clearing the fog that hid Knight. Though Tails was worried that not even Super Sonic would be powerful enough to defeat it, Sonic still wanted to fight the Titan. After claiming the last Chaos Emerald, Sonic turned into Super Sonic and fought Knight, which was destroyed. Seeing another a vision of an Ancient which he currently didn't know the context of, Super Sonic left the island.

Shadow Generations[]

Chaos Island is set to reappear in Shadow Generations.

Gameplay[]

An Eagle, which can be ridden in order to access smaller islands, from Sonic Frontiers.

The gameplay of Chaos Island slightly differs from the previous two islands, with 2D platform sections being more common, as well dangerous gimmicks, such as lava, which instantly kills the player, Ice, which prevents the player from climbing certain mountains, alongside the island being separated into multiple smaller islands, which can be accessed by using bridges, Grind Rails or Eagles.

SONIC FRONTIERS CSS3-2

3-2, one of the 7 Cyber Space stages on Chaos Island, from Sonic Frontiers.

Similarly to Kronos and Ares Islands, there are four Chaos Emerald Vaults, holding the blue, red, yellow and white Emeralds, being unlocked via Vault Keys, which are rewarded by completing Cyber Space stages. In order to obtain access to the red Chaos Emerald Vault, the player is required to progress through the story, unlike the two previous island, where all Vaults could be accessed before freeing the island's respective character.

Phantom-Rush

Sonic using Phantom Rush on Excavator, from Sonic Frontiers.

In order to access Cyber Space, the player requires at least 1 Portal Gear (with the exception of 3-7), which are obtained either as a rare drop by the regular enemies, or from this island's Guardians, which are Excavator, Fortress, Spider, Squid and Shinobi. The Cyber Space stage themes on Chaos Island are Green Hill, Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary.

FrontiersTailsChaosIsland

Tails on Chaos Island, from Sonic Frontiers.

On this island, the character which needs to be freed from Cyber Space is Tails, who requires 20 Memory Tokens. Unlike Ares Island and akin to Kronos Island, this island contains only two quests, each one rewarding the green, respectively the cyan Chaos Emeralds. The last Chaos Emerald is again located on the top of the Titan.

SONIC FRONTIERS M-056

M-056, from Sonic Frontiers.

Chaos Island contains 23 Challenges. When completed, they will reveal a part of the island, as well rewarding the player with a Seed. Completing all 23 will unlock the whole map, as well Fast travel to any Portal.

Overview[]

Similarly to the previous two islands, Sonic's goal is to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds. On this island, the player can choose between the two main paths:

  • Collect the blue, yellow, red and white Chaos Emeralds from Chaos Emerald Vaults. In order to claim the red Emerald though, the player will have to progress through the story in order to unlock a pathway to the island it is located.
  • Free Tails and complete Story Quests in order to unlock the green and cyan Chaos Emeralds.

After collecting six Chaos Emeralds, an Island Mystery, called Pinball, will be available to be played. If the player manages to collect 5,000,000 points, it will trigger an eruption, as well spawn Knight. After claiming the purple Chaos Emerald, Sonic will turn into Super Sonic and fight the Titan.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Chaos is the mythological void state preceding the creation of the universe.
  • According to director Morio Kishimoto, Chaos Island was originally to feature an abandoned mass-produced model of Giganto. This original intent is reflected in the concept art for the island.[3]
  • According to Ian Flynn, early story plans for Chaos Island involved it originally being a grassy alpine forest, which was transformed into a volcanic wasteland by The End's attack.[1] This plot point was eventually abandoned, and as a result, in the final game, Chaos Island is depicted in its normal volcanic appearance during Sonic and Tails' flashback sequence to the time of the End's attack.
  • Chaos Island will be featured in Shadow Generations, despite Shadow not appearing in Sonic Frontiers.

Uh, that's one of the things I'd say that got a little... I don't think it made final cut, was that Chaos Island was once supposed to be a verdent, alpine island, and it's present volcanic activity has been going on SINCE The End attacked the Earth's crust at that point. It RUINED that island. But, I don't think that made it to the finished product."
