We are the Borg. Lower your shields, and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

The Borg were a pseudo-race of cybernetic beings, or cyborgs, from the Delta Quadrant and are some of the main antagonists of the Star Trek franchise.
No truly single individual existed within the Borg Collective (with the possible sole exception of the Borg Queen), as they were linked into a hive mind. Their ultimate goal was perfection through the forcible assimilation of diverse sentient species, technologies, and knowledge. As a result, they were among the most dangerous and feared races in the galaxy.
The precise origins of the Borg are unclear - with several possible origins mentioned over time. However, the main evil Borg Collective that had tormented the Federation since the first encounter in Star Trek: The Next Generation finally met their end in the series finale of Star Trek: Picard when the Borg Queen's Super-Cube was destroyed, severing her control over Starfleet and the assimilated youth of it forever, but while the youth would be forever haunted by the atrocities they committed while assimilated, with the Borg gone for good, the Federation could finally close a dark chapter in its history and rebuild from the ashes.
Non-Canonical[]
The Borg are a major enemy faction in the MMORPG Star Trek Online and serve as the antagonists of both the opening sequence (tutorial-stage) as well as the second-to-last Episode mission-chain: they will also feature heavily in an upcoming patch devoted to a proposed battle with the Borg Queen herself.
Borg in Star Trek Online also engage regularly in raids of major star systems and players may fight them as part of a Strike Force for great rewards - the Star Trek Online universe is an alternate-universe from the one seen in the show, being roughly 200 or more years into the future (as of TOS) and also having merged many different realities into one (for example it has Voyager, Next Generation and even new Star Trek (Nero)).
Also due to their immense popularity, the Borg have appeared in countless Star Trek related video-games and merchandise outside of Star Trek Online, examples being:
Star Trek Armada (one of the main antagonists, led by a revived Locutus)
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (one of the main antagonists)
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force II
Star Trek: The Next Generation (one mission only)
Star Trek: Borg
Star Trek: Encounters (in the Voyager missions)
Reception[]
The Borg were universally received well when they first debuted in The Next Generation, likely due to them being taken much more seriously than the Ferengi, the previous main antagonistic species in the series. The Borg were seen as the ultimate antithesis as everything the Federation stood for, even more so than the Romulans or Klingons.
The introduction of the Borg Queen in First Contact was controversial due to the Borg's hive-mind nature, as it was not exactly clear what her role was. However, much of this was offset by the performance of Alice Krige.
The Borg were less well-received in Voyager as it seemed as if they had been artificially weakened, even without Species 8472's help, when it came to fighting the Voyager compared to either the Enterprise-D or E.
The phrase "Resistance is futile," has entered mainstream culture as an iconic phrase of Star Trek.
