Altovar is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Distant Voices".
He was played by Victor Rivers, who voiced Hro Talak in Justice League.
Biography[]
Altovar was a Lethean associate of Quark, who pressured him into approaching Doctor Bashir and attempting to buy biomemetic gel. Bashir refused, since it was a restricted and potentially dangerous substance. Altovar promptly went to the infirmary and attempted to rob it but was disturbed by Bashir. His response was to grab the doctor and give him a psychic shock, leaving him in a coma.
In his mind, Bashir found himself facing up to a psychic residue of Altovar who was slowly destroying the station, which represented Bashir's mind. Bashir himself was slowly aging in the psychic coma, while the avatar of Altovar killed other members of the crew who represented aspects of Bashir's self, as well as masquerading as Garak for a while.
Bashir eventually confronted the avatar of Altovar, who taunted him about his failings, pointing to the way he had given up a tennis career, deliberately got a question wrong in his final exam to avoid finishing first in his class and given up on pursuing a relationship with Lieutenant Dax. Bashir rejected the assertion, insisting his life was exactly how he wanted it. He managed to lure the representative of Altovar to the infirmary, trap it behind a forcefield and kill it with sterilisation gas.
Bashir woke up in the real world and learned the real Altovar had been arrested by Odo only two metres away from the infirmary. Garak noted he seemed to have been more dangerous in Bashir's head than in real life, although Bashir admitted Lethean telepathic comas were usually fatal.
