Rojan is the main antagonist of the Star Trek episode "By Any Other Name".
He was portrayed by the late Warren Stevens, who also played an Insect Alien in The Twilight Zone.
Biography[]
Rojan was the leader of a group of representatives of the Kelvan Empire, from the Andromeda Galaxy, who had come to Earth's galaxy looking for a new world to conquer. They lured the Enterprise to a deserted planet with a distress call, where Rojan quickly took a landing party prisoner on the surface while his men took control of the Enterprise, using their superior technology to freeze everyone in place. Kirk led the landing party in a failed escape attempt, prompting Rojan to convert Lieutenant Shea and Yeoman Thompson into trapezoid-like shapes capable of being held in the hand. He crushed the one that had been Thompson, killing her, before restoring Shea.
Rojan took control of the Enterprise and had the crew and his Kelvan followers pilot the ship through the barrier that surrounded the galaxy. He then had almost the entire crew converted into the trapezoid shapes, leading only Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty, who were the only ones felt to be essential. He also disabled the ship's self-destruct.
The remaining Enterprise crew realised that, while the Kelvans natural form was an octopus-like creature, they had assumed human form in order to pilot the Enterprise and thus were experiencing human emotions for the first time. They thus sought to play on those emotions. While Kirk set out to seduce one of the other Kelvans, Kelinda, Spock began manipulating Rojan into feeling jealous of the attachment. Rojan ordered Kelinda to stay away from Kirk. When Spock informed him she had disobeyed, Rojan confronted Kirk, prompting a fist fight. As they fought, Kirk taunted Rojan about how human he was becoming and how the other Kelvans would reject them if they saw them. He told him the Federation would be happy for Rojan's group to settle in their territory, which brought Rojan up short. He asked Kelinda if she wanted to stay with Kirk and she responded by kissing Rojan. Rojan decided to accept Kirk's offer and returned control of the Enterprise to him.
