Krola is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "First Contact".
He was portrayed by Michael Ensign, who voiced Dr. Nefarious Tropy in Crash Bandicoot and Rafael Drake in James Bond: Nightfire.
Biography[]
Krola was the Minister of Security on the planet Malcor 3. Although he was friends with the planet's leader Durken, he disagreed with Durken's reforms, advocating a strict conservatism and return to traditional values. He was opposed to Science Minister Mirasta's plans to make a faster than light journey to another star system using an experimental warp drive.
While Durken and Mirasta made peaceful contact with Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew, Krola was disgusted by the idea of contact with aliens, insisting they would conquer them with ideas and seeing Durken's hope to establish relations with them as surrender. He learned that Commander Riker, who was undercover as a Malcorian, was a patient in a nearby medical facility, a fact Mirasta had convinced Picard to keep from Durken. He was outraged at the fact the Federation had been watching them for years, claiming that they had influenced their young.
Krola headed to the medical facility wanting to interrogate Riker. The facility's director, Berel, refused to use drugs to revive him, since he was recovering from major surgery and they could prove fatal. Krola responded by having Berel relieved of duty and having the new director, Nilrem, administer the drugs. Riker continued to insist the Enterprise's mission was peaceful but Krola replied that, even if they believed that, their presence would mean an end to his way of life. He placed Riker's phaser in his hand, intending to shoot himself with it and make it look as though Riker had killed him. Riker managed to adjust the setting as Krola fired it. Moments later, Lieutenant Worf and Doctor Crusher arrived on the scene, having been alerted to Riker's location by Durken, and took them both back to the Enterprise for treatment.
Since the phaser had been set to stun, Krola quickly recovered and the Enterprise crew worked out what he had done. Durken told Krola that his actions had convinced him Malcorians were not ready for contact with other worlds and chose not to establish relations with the Federation until social reforms had prepared them.
