The dream aliens are the main antagonists of the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Waking Moments". They are a species that exist in a permanent state of dreaming.
History[]
The crew of USS Voyager first became aware of the dream alien when a number of them experienced nightmares, all of which ended with the alien appearing and watching them. Ensign Kim and five other crewmembers failed to wake from the dreams, being left in a sleep that could not be broken. Commander Chakotay decided to enter a lucid dream in an attempt to communicate with the alien. He successfully met with him and the alien told him his species' natural state was to be asleep and dreaming. This left them vulnerable in the waking world, so whenever a ship entered their territory, they caused the crew to fall asleep and let their bodies wither and die without nourishment. Chakotay insisted Voyager meant them no harm and the alien told him that if Voyager headed for a system with six planets, they would be out of their space and the aliens would allow the affected crewmembers to wake up.
Chakotay appeared to wake up and relay the dream alien's message. Voyager did as instructed and the danger seemed to be past, with Kim and the others waking up. However, they were then attacked by a group of ships led by the dream alien. Their technology was rendered useless and the aliens boarded Voyager and took the crew prisoner. Chakotay believed he had been tricked into leading Voyager into an ambush.
However, when Chakotay saw an image of a moon, the clue that he was asleep, in a panel, he realised the truth: He had never woken from his first conversation with the dream alien. In fact, the rest of Voyager's crew had been lured to sleep as well and placed in a shared dream that the aliens controlled. Chakotay managed to wake up and join up with the Doctor, the only other person still awake on Voyager, and together they found the chamber where the aliens' sleeping bodies lay hidden, together with the transmitter that was causing the sleep.
Chakotay's disappearance from the dream caused Captain Janeway and the others to work out what was going on. Although they were unable to wake themselves, since they lacked Chakotay's experience of lucid dreaming, knowing their surroundings weren't real left them unable to be harmed by the dream, with explosions and the aliens' weapons not affecting them. The dream alien was unconcerned, noting eventually their bodies would die in the real world. Meanwhile, Chakotay beamed to the chamber where the aliens lay asleep and woke one of them with a stimulant, causing him to disappear from the dream. Chakotay then allowed himself to fall asleep and rejoin the dream, informing the dream alien that Voyager would fire on the chamber and kill all the aliens unless they turned off the transmitter and allowed Voyager to depart. The aliens evidently complied, with Voyager soon on its way again.
Trivia[]
