Virginia Creel is a minor antagonist in Season 4 of the Netflix original series Stranger Things, and a major antagonist in its 2023 stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. She was the wife of Victor Creel and mother of Alice and Henry Creel, while secretly an ally of Dr. Martin Brenner.

She was portrayed by Tyner Rushing. In the stage play, she is portrayed by Lauren Ward.

Personality[]

On the surface, Virginia appears to be a kind and loving housewife.

Though she can be loving towards her husband and children, she was very controlling towards her son, Henry, forcing him to do sessions with doctors, being a partial cause for his descent into villainy. In addition, Virginia is shown to be a very intelligent woman as she was able to figure out that Henry was behind the hauntings in her new house. Once she discovered her son's actions, powers, and bloodthirsty nature, Virginia decided to send him to Dr. Martin Brenner for treatment, but while it was debatable if she did it out of concern for Henry or in his own words, she despised him, her decision to send her son for treatment ultimately led her to be killed by him.

Biography[]

In March 1959, Virginia, her husband Victor, and their children, Alice and Henry, relocated to Hawkins, Indiana, following a windfall from Virginia's late great-uncle. Eager for a fresh start, they settled into a new house. However, strange occurrences began within a month of their arrival.

Initially, it was the discovery of mutilated animal corpses, attributed by the police chief to wildcat attacks. Despite this explanation, the Creel family harbored doubts. Victor suspected a malevolent force, possibly a demon. These incidents escalated beyond animal deaths when Virginia and her daughter Alice started experiencing disturbing hallucinations resembling nightmares. For Virginia, these visions emerged while she was awake, manifesting as swarms of spiders infiltrating their home. On one occasion, she found the bathtub infested with hundreds of spiders, yet Victor, summoned to witness, saw nothing but running water.

Soon, Victor too succumbed to similar hallucinations. While he attributed these phenomena to a demonic presence, Virginia grew suspicious of their son, Henry. According to Henry's later account, Virginia somehow intuited his involvement and began resenting him. She considered sending Henry to Dr. Martin Brenner for treatment, but he learned of her intentions before she could act.

Tragedy struck during a dinner, with the radio experiencing interference and lights flickering. As Victor investigated, Virginia was inexplicably lifted into the air, her limbs grotesquely contorted, jaw broken, and eyes seemingly gouged out. She fell lifeless onto the table, a victim of a horrifying demise.
