~ XANA speaking to the Lyoko Warriors in its simulation.
In the very beginning, it was a program that I designed to counter a military project, based on a multi-agent system.
~ XANA itself while posing as Franz Hopper.
A super dangerous program, like a virus, which can control electricity, and activates Towers on Lyoko in order to gain access to your world.
~ Aelita

XANA is the main antagonist of the cartoon series Code Lyoko. It is a sentient and hostile computer program that controls the virtual world of Lyoko. XANA wants to take over the world and shows no mercy to those who stand in its way, namely its mortal enemies: the Lyoko Warriors.

When disguised as Jeremie Belpois in the episode "Ghost Channel", it was voiced by Raphaëlle Lubansu and David Gasman in English. In the Japanese dub, it was voiced by Akio Otsuka, who also voiced The Devil from The Snow Queen, All for One from My Hero Academia, Yujiro Hanma from Baki, and Blackbeard from One Piece.

Short History

Main article: XANA/Synopsis

XANA was a multi-agent computer program created by Franz Hopper along with the virtual world of Lyoko to destroy Project Carthage like a virus, but it eventually grew self-aware and incredibly hostile. XANA went rogue and trapped its creator and his daughter, Aelita, on Lyoko and tries to eliminate them both, forcing Franz Hopper to shut down the Supercomputer.

Nine years later, the Supercomputer and XANA were reactivated by a local boarding student: Jeremie Belpois, discovering Aelita and Lyoko. To keep from being shut down again, XANA launches attacks on Earth by activating virtual Towers on Lyoko to target him and three other students involved with the Supercomputer: Odd Della Robia, Ulrich Stern, and Yumi Ishiyama. It is capable of controlling electricity, taking over networks and devices, using ghostly specters to possess targets, and materializing minions to attack and do its bidding, while programming virtual monsters, traps, and alterations to fight its enemies on Lyoko.

The four students and Aelita make up the "Lyoko Warriors" to protect the Earth from XANA's wrath until they could finally materialize Aelita and shut down the Supercomputer, but XANA binds her fate to its own by stealing her past memories. Meanwhile, XANA develops stronger abilities and monsters from continued returns to the past. It seeks to access the world network, but needs the Keys to Lyoko inside Aelita's memory for that purpose. XANA creates the Scyphozoa which can steal memory from anything and tries to lure her to Lyoko for its monster to capture and drain her without interference, eventually succeeding and escaping the Supercomputer.

Not needing the virtual world anymore, XANA tries to destroy Lyoko to stop its enemies by targeting the Core of Lyoko with monsters or attacking the Supercomputer on Earth. To block its enemies from stopping its attacks on the core, XANA uses the Scyphozoa to brainwash Aelita to destroy Lyoko's sectors one by one, and it succeeds in wiping out the virtual world by possessing a new virtual warrior: William Dunbar to serve as its most dangerous minion. However, Franz Hopper revealed himself to be alive and helped the group recreate Lyoko to continue fighting XANA. Seeing him as the biggest threat, XANA now hunts and seeks to eliminate its elusive creator on the network.

Meanwhile, XANA has established an interconnected network of infected supercomputers and built Replikas, Lyoko copies, inside them to continue existing outside of Lyoko and take over secret bases for its world domination plans. XANA continues to attack its enemies and tries to protect its Replikas, but it is eventually revealed to have built hundreds on the network. All these machines and facilities have made XANA vastly powerful in the virtual and real worlds, allowing it to create a mighty Kolossus monster to decimate its enemies and build robot armies on Earth to destroy mankind and conquer Earth. The Lyoko Warriors manage to free William from XANA's enslavement and created a multi-agent program to destroy XANA. In the final battle, Franz Hopper helps the team launch the Anti-XANA program by sacrificing himself to give it enough power to eliminate XANA's presence everywhere on the network, finally ending the evil virus for good.

Personality

XANA was a basic computer program that evolved until it grew self-aware, but its nature as a virus made it incredibly hostile, dangerous, and bent on world domination, viewing all mankind as a threat. Its ultimate goals are to destroy humanity and conquer Earth, while showing no mercy to enemies and obstacles. It is highly intelligent, able to launch calculated and specific attacks, hide its motives, and understand human behavior to take advantage of its enemies. However, XANA is not completely infallible, being unable to grasp the complexity of friendship, love, or self-sacrifice, making it underestimate its enemies.

As an entity driven by simple logic, XANA only truly values its own safety and needs, lacking concern for anything beyond itself and viewing all things as potential tools or enemies. After reawakening, it needed to keep the Supercomputer online to survive before its escape. For the same reason, XANA helped destroy the rogue Marabounta to preserve Aelita's memory and save itself. This simple mindset can be exploited by threatening things currently vital to its objectives.

While lacking real personality as a program, XANA occasionally reveals emerging qualities through incarnations, like sadistic, mocking, and egomaniacal behavior and viewing itself as superior to humans. However, XANA is capable of gratitude and respect, thanking its enemies for helping destroy the Marabounta and valuing intelligence and skill, but condemns stupidity and illogical behavior.

Capabilities

VIRUS Logo

The Eye of XANA - the only sign of its presence.

XANA is a multi-agent virus that has taken over the virtual world of Lyoko inside the Supercomputer, activating Towers to launch attacks on Earth, while its core program hides in the systems and gains power from returns to the past. However, XANA cannot directly influence Lyoko Warriors due to resistance granted from fighting on Lyoko, nor access their programs and functions in the restricted access area. All of its capabilities are listed below:

Lyoko Towers

X.A.N.A

XANA activating a Tower.

While using activated Towers, XANA's can infiltrate networks or manifest itself as ghostly specters through outlets to interact with the real world, the closest it has to a physical form. Its attacks can only truly be stopped by deactivating its Towers on Lyoko, while conventional methods fail or stall them momentarily.

Xana spectre

A XANA specter

XANA is a sentient virus program that can take over computers and machines, and manipulate electricity for lightning attacks, causing storms, influencing electronics, or generating ultrasound or magnetism. In the form of specters, XANA is capable of possessing inanimate objects, natural elements, or living things to attack on Earth or use as tools. After evolving further, XANA can control humans or manifest polymorphic specters in human forms to do its bidding on Earth, both of which are pixelized with its spectral and electrical powers to make them more dangerous. Only Lyoko Warriors cannot be controlled due to their virtual resistance. They return to normal or disappear when their Towers deactivate, and victims do not remember what happened.

Other capabilities include materializing and teleporting minions to Earth through Scanners or Replikas, showing involuntary visions through a psychic link, and activating made devices (nanobot viruses, mind control necklace, deadly music files, cybernetic spiders, robots, etc.).

Monsters & Programs

Xana monsters

All of XANA's monsters

On Lyoko, XANA's virtual capabilities allow it to create monsters of many types in small or large groups to attack enemies and targets and uses the Scyphozoa to steal memory or brainwash warriors on Lyoko. Additionally, XANA can program virtual alterations, illusions, prisons, or simulation bubbles, and create trap mechanisms and open portals in Sector 5 before it was recreated.

XANA can also launch programs through monsters, plant bugs and viruses, directly manipulate incomplete warriors, and create abilities and equipment for its own Lyoko Warriors.

Network Replikas

After gaining access to the world network, XANA secretly infected other supercomputers with its multi-agent system and created Replikas inside them, copies of Lyoko to acquire greater machine resources and take over secret bases on Earth. Near the series' end, XANA established an interconnected system made of hundreds of Replikas providing it strength. Their combined power allowed XANA to create a massive Kolossus monster to decimate its virtual enemies and build robot armies on Earth to destroy humanity before the Anti-XANA Program destroyed the evil virus and its Replikas permanently.

Physical Incarnations

XANA is a self-aware computer program in the Supercomputer that acts as a hidden, dark force lurking inside its systems, generating red, pulsating energies that run through Lyoko wires when currently active. It is a purely digital and impersonable entity without any virtual or physical form. Only the specters it manifests on Earth serve as extensions of its system and are the closest thing it has to a physical form.

XANA-Jeremie

XANA's only physical incarnation as seen in "Ghost Channel".

In the episode "Ghost Channel", XANA had its only real incarnation masquerading as Jeremie Belpois inside a virtual simulation of the real world made by the evil virus meant to imprison the Lyoko Warriors, becoming a monstrous caricature figure of Jeremie with sharp nails, spiky hair, glowing eyes, and an unnatural aura. was destroyed when Aelita dispersed the bubble with her powers.

Xana 1

XANA's true form as it is dying.

The second direct appearance of XANA was at the end of "The Key", where the enormous mass of a specter was seen spiraling into the sky from the Factory as the program used the Keys to Lyoko to escape the Supercomputer. However, the closest to real appearance was in "Fight to the Finish". As XANA's whole system was being destroyed by the Anti-XANA Program, the specter that was possessing William was forced out of his body, becoming a giant entity with a misshapen eye symbol on its torso writhing in agony before being vaporized into nothing.
