The coalescent organism is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Aquiel".
Its natural form was achieved with a video effect. While disguised as Maura, it was portrayed by a dog named Friday.
Biography[]
The coalescent organism was a lifeform that survived by absorbing other lifeforms and duplicating them, taking on their appearance and characteristics. It was theorised that it would hold a form for days or weeks before needing another one. At some point, likely while he was on a remote posting in the Triona system, the organism attacked and killed Starfleet officer Lieutenant Keith Rocha, taking on his form and identity. It travelled to Relay Station 47 as Rocha where it developed an adversarial relationship with the other officer assigned to the station, Lieutenant Aquiel Unhari.
The organism eventually attacked Unhari, trying to absorb her. She managed to fight it off, apparently injuring it with a phaser and causing some of it to be detached, before fleeing the station in a shuttle. The organism thus turned on and killed the only other lifeform left on the station: Unhari's dog Maura.
The organism was still in Maura's form when the Enterprise arrived to investigate the deserted station. Commander Riker and his away team found it hiding in a hatch as Maura, with Lieutenant Commander La Forge taking custody of the apparent dog until Unhari could be found.
Meanwhile, Doctor Beverly Crusher had run tests on the residue from the organism's encounter with Unhari. When it unconsciously duplicated her hand on being touched, she realised what they were dealing with and the fate of Rocha. The crew assumed that the organism's new form must be either Unhari or Commander Morag, a Klingon officer who had boarded the station after Unhari's departure, and placed them both other observation. The organism reverted to its true form in La Forge's quarters and attacked him, but La Forge managed to retrieve a phaser and blast the organism, killing it.
Trivia[]
In early versions of the episode, Unhari was to have been the organism, with other suggestions being Morag or that it was still in Rocha's form.
