Salandit (Japanese: ヤトウモリ, Hepburn: Yatoumori) (suh-LAN-dit[1]) is a Poison/Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Salandit is a salamander-like Pokémon with black-colored skin and reddish-orange markings on its back. It has squinting purple eyes, a mouth filled with black jagged teeth, and a pair of ear-like appendages on the back of its neck resembling bandana ties.
Behavior[]
Although they aren't very strong Pokémon, Salandit are terribly cunning and can confuse opponents during battles. They often make their homes near the sites of active volcanoes. Salandit in fact prefer to sneak up on prey from behind and immobilize them with their fumes before the victims even notice. Humorously, Salandit have great trouble hunting Spinda, as their dizzying gases have little effect on these tipsy Pokémon.
Female Salandit can eventually evolve into Salazzle. Male Salandit are highly attracted to Salazzle, offering both food and even their lives to gain her affection by the end of mating season. Due to the devotion towards Salazzle, male Salandit are highly malnourished and incapable of evolving.
Natural abilities[]
They are able to secrete a cocktail of flames and noxious gas from the tip of their tails. Female Salandit are able to produce special pheromones that attract mates and humans, which can control the victims who have sniffed them.
Evolution[]
Female Salandit evolve into Salazzle starting at level 33. Male Salandit can't evolve due to malnutrition.

Pokédex entries[]
- Sun
It burns its bodily fluids to create a poisonous gas. When its enemies become disoriented from inhaling the gas, it attacks them.
- Moon
Volcanoes or dry, craggy places are its home. It emanates a sweet-smelling poisonous gas that attracts bug Pokémon, then attacks them.
- Ultra Sun
The males will do whatever the females tell them. They give the females most of their food. Due to malnutrition, the males can’t evolve.
- Ultra Moon
It weakens opponents and sends them reeling with its poisonous gas. Salandit doesn’t deal well with Spinda, since it’s always reeling.
- Sword
Its venom sacs produce a fluid that this Pokémon then heats up with the flame in its tail. This process creates Salandit's poisonous gas.
- Shield
This sneaky Pokémon will slink behind its prey and immobilize it with poisonous gas before the prey even realizes Salandit is there.
- Scarlet
It taunts its prey and lures them into narrow, rocky areas where it then sprays them with toxic gas to make them dizzy and take them down.
- Violet
Only female Salandit can produce gas laden with pheromones. Males entranced by this gas will do whatever the females tell them.

Trivia[]
- Salandit is the third Pokémon to be named after the salamander, the other two being Charmander and Salamence.
- Salandit is the first Poison-type Pokémon that is able to poison every type, including its own primary type, with its ability Corrosion.
- Salandit is one of the five Pokémon whose evolution depends on its gender. It shares this trait with Burmy, Combee, Kirlia and Snorunt.
- Salandit and its evolution Salazzle are so far the first and currently only Pokémon to be a Poison/Fire-type.
- Game Freak Pokémon designer James Turner once stated that Salandit is his favorite Pokémon in one of his now deleted tweets.
Origin[]
Salandit is based on a salamander, specifically a fire-bellied newt, which has bright orange markings to warn predators of its poisonous secretions. The fact only females evolve may be a reference to the all-female whiptail lizard, an all female lizard that breeds asexually. The black marking on its face and the ear-like appendages resemble a mask worn by burglars or possibly ninjas.
Etymology[]
Salandit is a combination of the words salamander and bandit.
