Effect[]
In Battle[]
Rest causes the user to fall asleep, fully restoring its HP and healing any status condition. The user must rest for two turns. The move will fail if the user's HP is full.
If a Pokémon affected by Toxic manages to pull off Rest, it will be cured of poison, but Toxic's counter is not reset; if it is then Burned, or afflicted by Leech Seed or Poison, the damage will be calculated with the formula for bad poison (N * x) and the N value will still increase by 1 each time. If the Pokémon is poisoned with Toxic, the N value will be reset to 1.
Starting from Generation II, the user will now awaken from Rest three turns after it is used and can attack on the third. When called up by Sleep Talk, Rest will replenish the user's HP and reset the number of turns asleep to 2(though it will not work starting from Generation III). It will also cure major status conditions the user is affected by. Safeguard will not prevent usage of Rest, and the user of Rest under the effects of Safeguard will still sleep for the full two turns.
Rest, due to its use of the Sleeping status condition, has several unique interactions with related abilities:
- Pokémon with the Early Bird Ability will only spend one turn asleep instead of two (excluding the turn in which Rest is used).
- Rest will automatically fail if used by a Pokémon with a sleep prevention ability (e.g. Insomnia), as these Abilities prevent them from falling asleep.
- Rest will fail when used while Uproar is in effect, except when the user has Soundproof (though the latter effect had been removed)
- Leaf Guard will prevent the use of Rest when harsh sunlight (e.g. from the use of Sunny Day), starting from Generation V.
- Rest will fail if Electric Terrain or Misty Terrain is in effect and the user is grounded (e.g. a Flying type struck down by Smack Down, Gravity being used prior etc.)
- Rest will fail if the user is affected by Sweet Veil.
Rest can be used as part of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining two extra appeal points if Belly Drum/Charm/Yawn was used in the prior turn. It can also be used to start a combination, causing Sleep Talk/Snore's base appeal points to be doubled if the latter 2 are used next; in a Contest Spectacular combination, Rest causes these 2 moves to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn instead.
If powered up by a Psychium Z into Z-Rest, all of the user's lowered stats are reset.

Special move[]
Generation IV[]
Generation VIII[]
In the Super Smash Bros. Series[]
Rest functions as Jigglypuff's Down Special Move. When used, Jigglypuff immediately falls asleep (But won't regain health) and becomes vulnerable to attack, but if an opponent is in contact with a tiny hitbox around the centre of its body, they would be sent flying and be dealt severe knockback, in addition to being set on fire (akin to getting hit by a Fire type move, in Melee only) or have a damage inflicting flower planted on their head (Brawl-present, comparable to Poison). It is often the character's go-to KO option and considered a high-risk high-reward move.
Trivia[]
- Rest is one of the few moves who were given to a playble Pokémon that had its function changed. Others include Withdraw (used by Squirtle, based on the species use of Rapid Spin in the anime), Double Team used by Luacrio as a counterattack), and Substitute (used by Greninja as a counterattack).
- There is a glitch in Red and Blue, as well as Yellow, that causes the stat reductions associated with paralysis and burn to remain despite the fact that the Pokémon no longer has that status after Rest was used, though it can be overcome by simply switching the user out.
- This was fixed in Pokémon Stadium.
- Another quirk excluisve to Red, Blue and Yellow is how Rest will also fail if the difference between the user's maximum HP and current HP leaves a remainder of 255 when divided by 256.
