Gimmighoul (Japanese: コレクレー, Hepburn: Korekuree) (GIH-mee-ghoul^[1]) is a Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Gimmighoul is a tiny humanoid Pokémon with a flat shape, and a particularly round head that is large compared to its body. It has a light-grey, silvery metallic body, long, thin arms with circular paws, stubby legs, and two black stripes circling its slightly plumper waist. It has a pair of golden-yellow circular eyes that are surrounded by black markings in the shape of eyeglasses. It also has two antennae and a tail which resemble and act as modern metal dowsing rods.

In its Roaming form, Gimmighoul typically carries a single yellow coin on its back using its prehensile tail. Its tail holds the coin tightly against its body as it carefully wanders. While in its Chest form, Gimmighoul inhabits a red coin-filled chest with gold accents, a black latch, and a silver lock containing a small design with the number 1000 imprinted on it.

Shiny Gimmighoul are nearly white in color, a slightly lighter hue than the seal on their treasure chests.

Special abilities[]

Gimmighoul is able to take control of both humans and Pokémon by using its ghostly energy. Gimmighoul mostly use this ability to obtain coins that its victims manage to collect for it.

In Scarlet and Violet, a Roaming Gimmighoul will use its coin as a shield when afraid, and will also slam opponents with its coin when battling an opponent-face-to-face (as seen in Synchro-Mode).

Behavior[]

Gimmighoul is a vulnerable and anxious tiny Pokémon, usually seen hiding in a treasure chest, using it to protect itself and accumulate its coins. However, a huge drawback of using the chest is the hinderance of movement; Gimmighoul cannot move very quickly as a result of this. Although when Roaming, it can move very fast to avoid opponents, such as thieves trying to steal its coin. People often mistaken Gimmighoul for an antique or treasure. Gimmighoul usually take refuge in various buildings, such as warehouses and shops. In the wild, these chests can usually be found in watchtowers and ruins scattered across Paldea.

Other Gimmighoul who have not acquired a treasure chest are known to loiter around various areas, making various sounds that an alert Trainer can use to find them. If discovered, the Gimmighoul quickly flees, dropping its coin.

Gimmighoul hates and is afraid of thieves, seeing as its coins are vital to it. To prevent anyone or anything from stealing its coins, it is also known to drain the life out of the greedy foes who attempt to steal its treasure, as a defense mechanism, being such a vulnerable and small creature. However, it is not malevolent despite its defensive behavior in the wild.

Gimmighoul is playfully mischievous and friendly toward its trainer, and has a childlike disposition.

Evolution[]

Gimmighoul evolves into Gholdengo after leveling up with 999 Gimmighoul Coins in the player's inventory.

• Gimmighoul's Roaming form was first teased through Pokémon GO on November 5, 2022. During this time, it would follow the player as they collected Paldea-originated coins from golden PokéStops.
• A story was told about a girl who was gathering coins under the influence of Gimmighoul during a Pokémon Scarlet and Violet x Pokémon GO video released on November 7, 2022.
• The differing forms were named by Jacq and Professor Willow, Chest form and Roaming form respectively.
• Among Ghost type Pokémon, Gimmighoul has the:
  • Lowest Base Attack Stat (tied with Yamask and Litwick)
  • Lowest Base Speed Stat (in Chest Form)
  • Lowest Base Defense (in Roaming Form)
  • In addition, Gimmighoul's Roaming Form is the smallest (tied with Sinistea) and lightest (tied with Gastly and Haunter) Ghost type.
• Much like Spiritomb and 108, Gimmighoul appears to be heavily linked to the number 999, as the number is:
  • Its National Pokedex Number.
  • The number of Gimmighoul Coins it needs to evolve, as well as the number of coins the girl in the aformentioned story collected.
  • The number the teaser website regarding it counted to.
• Roaming Form Gimmighoul is a shiny-locked Pokémon. None of the Chest Form Gimmighoul encountered in the overworld appear as shiny. However, shiny Chest Forms were added into the game as part of a limited event where there was a chance to encounter them in Tera Raid Battles.

Origin[]

Gimmighoul (especially its Chest Form) seems to be based on a Mimic, a monster from Dungeons & Dragons and several role-playing games, as both they and Gimmighoul imitate the appearance of a treasure chest.

Most likely, Gimmighoul is based on the Spanish folktale of "Patufet", a tiny bean-shaped boy who was known to always carry a coin with him.

Additionally this Pokémon's laminated form resembles tunjos, Muisca figurines made of molded gold in the shape of ethereal, ghostly humans or animals. Its Ghost-type is likely based on the fact that these molded golden figures are usually found in burial places, and places of worship.

Its antennae resemble modern metal dousing rods, which are notable for the pseudoscientific belief that they help find buried ores or treasure. Its association with the number 999 may be due to 999 fine gold, which ties into its evolution's golden motif.

Gimmighoul and Gholdengo's motif are altogether based on the Spanish legend of El Dorado, a mystical city of gold, where treasure such as gold coins were sought and thought to be found by conquistadors.

Etymology[]

Gimmighoul's name might be a combination of "gimme" (an informal form of "give me"), "gimmick", "mimic", and "ghoul". The English name was likely meant to sound like "give me gold".

Its original Japanese name, Collecurei, more accurately describes it (as it is not based on a "ghoul", but a ghost). Collecurei may be a combination of collect, 霊 rei (spirit/ghost), and a pun on the phrase これくれ kore kure which translates to "Give me this".
