Honedge (Japanese: ヒトツキ, HepburnHitotsuki) (HONE-ej[1]) is a Steel/Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Honedge is a Pokémon that is based on a sword. It has a single blue eye on its hilt. On the bottom of the hilt is a blue strip of cloth that it uses like a hand to unsheathe its blade. It has an unusual, brown-colored sheath with three holes at the top. When sheathed, the holes make it look like it has a menacing face. When unsheathed, Honedge's blade is silver, and it holds its sheath with the blue strip of cloth attached to the bottom of its hilt.

Special abilities[]

Honedge unsheathed in battle

In battle, Honedge may be unsheathed from the scabbard. Its sharp blades can cause serious damage. Those that wield it like a sword will quickly find themselves wrapped in its blue cloth and drained of energy.

Behavior[]

It is said that Honedge is actually a wandering spirit living inside a normal sword. Honedge does not like to be touched, and will not hesitate to use its Ghost-type powers to attack and drain the energy from anyone who disturbs it. If one were to carelessly take Honedge by the hilt, they may find the blue cloth wrapping around their arm, draining the energy from their body.

Legends tell the story of how Honedge's life essence is actually the body of a human who was killed by the same exact sword that comprised of Honedge's body itself.

Evolution[]

Honedge can be evolved into Doublade at level 35, which can then evolve into Aegislash via Dusk Stone.

Description

NTSC: The origin of this Pokémon is a great ghost tale: it's said that Honedge are ancient swords possessed by a departed spirit. Should people try to grab the sword, Honedge will attack them or wrap its sash around their arm, slowly draining the life energy from their body. Moral of the story: be careful around ancient swords. PAL: There's a rather spooky tale behind this Pokémon's origins: apparently, it's an ancient sword possessed by a departed spirit. Honedge won't let anyone grip its hilt. If they try, it will attack them or wrap its sash around their arm and drain the life energy from their body! Yikes!

Trivia[]

  • Hondege, along with its evolutions, is the only Pokémon with a Steel/Ghost matchup.
  • Honedge, unsheathed, has a near-similar appearance to the Sword of Omens, short sword version, from the popular show Thundercats as both Honedge and the Sword are swords with one eye in the hilt.

Origin[]

Honedge is based on a sword mostly like a haunted, cursed, or magical sword, possibly a jian, specifically. With its ghost type, it may be based on Japanese myths of how katanas are said to act on free will while possessing the soul of their user. It could also be based on tsukumogami, objects that were abandoned and forgotten and gain sentience, with sword tsukumogami being said to attack people. It could also be based on of the Tyrfind of Norse Mythology, a sword that was cursed to drain the life of its wielder whenever it was drawn.

Etymology[]

Honedge is a combination of hone (sharpen), one, edge, and on edge (excited or anxious).
