Rainbow Mario is a special form of Mario that first appears in Super Mario Galaxy. The powers of this form can be granted by obtaining a Rainbow Star, it makes Mario/Luigi invincible similar to the effects of a Starman but the effects of a Rainbow Star are insurmountable compared to those of a Starman. In addition to being invincible to all enemies and enemy attacks, the heroic plumber is also faster and leaves a rainbow trail behind, additionally, his jumps are also higher and longer. If Mario doesn't stop running while in this form, he'll get Star Bits (but obviously, if he doesn't run or runs in small bursts, he won't get any star bits at all). All enemies killed while in this form will turn into masses of Star Bits as well, while in this form, Mario/Luigi can also break open objects that would normally require Ground Pounds or Star Spins (such as Crates and Item Crystals) just by simply running into them. Unfortunately, Mario/Luigi cannot combine this form with any other power-up; if Mario touches a power-up (such as a Fire Flower) while under the effects of a Rainbow Star, the other item will be kicked away off the screen. Most enemies killed by the Plumbers while in this form have unique animations upon leaving behind numerous Star Bits in their wake. The music as well as Mario himself will increase in speed while in use as time goes by, making Mario get harder and harder to control until the effects run out.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, some Teleporter Planets early on in the game have Rainbow Stars which allow the plumbers to easily exterminate each enemy from the triple 1-Up Mushroom prize, additionally, some Romp Comet involve the plumbers having to kill all enemies in the area under the effects of a Rainbow Star within a time limit to get the Power Star.

Trivia[]

• In Super Mario Galaxy, as Rainbow Mario, Mario/Luigi's entire body changes color and leaves behind a rainbow trail in his wake. However in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario/Luigi's entire body is just a glittery red but he still leaves a rainbow trail as he runs.
• The artwork for Rainbow Mario's artwork is similar to Invincible Mario's artwork; Mario's poses in both artworks are identical, though he faces in different direction in each artwork.
• Rainbow Mario's theme is re-orchestration of the same theme of Wing Mario from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS as well as the invincibility theme from New Super Mario Bros. which in turn originated from the Superstar Baby Mario theme in the game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
• Due to the traits of invulnerability, changing colors, increased speed, and leaving after-images, this form is similar to Hyper Sonic of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
