~ Loomis cursing Rebecca Byrne. |
Edward "Ned" Loomis is the main antagonist of the Law & Order episode "Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die". He is a wealthy young playboy who rapes and murders a young woman he is seeing on the side. He is loosely based upon real-life murderer Robert Chambers.
He was portrayed by Thomas Calabro.
Biography[]
Early life[]
The son of a wealthy banker, Loomis goes into the family business as an adult as a stockbroker, but spends most of his time drinking, clubbing, and womanizing. He is engaged to Rebecca Byrne, another wealthy socialite, but regularly cheats on her. When he impregnates his latest conquest, college student Paige Bartlett, she pressures him to leave Byrne and marry her. However, he loses his temper, and rapes and murders her.
"Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die"[]
During the investigation of Bartlett's murder, NYPD Homicide Sergeant Max Greevey and Detective Mike Logan question her friends, who say that she started seeing Loomis to experiment with life outside of her comfortable, privileged world. She eventually fell in love with him, however, and asked him to leave his fiancée. When an autopsy shows that Bartlett was pregnant with Loomis' child, Greevey and Logan arrest him.
Executive Assistant District Attorney Ben Stone and Assistant District Attorney Paul Robinette prosecute Loomis for rape and murder, and eventually learn that Loomis has a history of domestic violence, including nearly strangling a woman named Elise Brody to death because she refused to give him oral sex. When they try to introduce his history of violence into evidence, however, the trial judge rules that they cannot use his prior bad acts against him.
Since their case against Loomis is otherwise weak, they try to persuade Byrne to testify against him, but she refuses, convinced of his innocence. Out of options, they introduce her to Brody, who tells Byrne what Loomis did to her. She finally sees Loomis for what he is and testifies that he had told her he killed Bartlett. Loomis is then found guilty of second-degree murder, and imprisoned.
