~ Wayne brainwashing his campers. |
Wayne Hensley is the main antagonist of the Law & Order episode "Angelgrove". He is a religious fanatic who uses the titular Christian camp to brainwash children into believing that they are "soldiers" for Christianity in a war against Islam.
He was portrayed by Sean Astin.
Biography[]
Past[]
Hensley is a religious zealot and self-appointed prophet who preaches a violent, apocalyptic reading of Christianity at Angelgrove, the Christian youth camp he runs for children and teenagers from dysfunctional families. He tells his converts that Christianity is at war with Islam, and that they, as "soldiers for Christ", must do what is necessary to defeat Muslim "infidels", including murder. He also considers anyone who has personal relationships with Muslims to be enemies of God who must be destroyed. He uses humiliation and threats to indoctrinate his campers, calling them "hypocrites" and "deniers of Christ" unless they bend to his will.
He convinces one of his campers, Jason Lortell, that his mother Audrey is a "Jezebel" because she had an affair with a Muslim man. Jason takes Hensley's words to heart, and kills his mother by stoning her to death, taking two younger campers with him to "witness".
"Angelgrove"[]
When NYPD Homicide Detectives Ed Green and Cyrus Lupo arrest Jason for murdering his mother, he claims that God speaks to him through Hensley, and that it was his duty to save his mother's soul by "sacrificing her flesh". Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter and Assistant District Attorney Connie Rubirosa charge Hensley with second-degree murder and manslaughter, reasoning that Jason murdered his mother because Hensley's preaching conditioned him to do it.
During the trial, Hensley denies influencing Jason to murder his mother, but praises his mentee's crime as the will of God and calls him a "General of God's Army". While cross-examining Hensley, Cutter asks him point blank whether God tells him to tell his flock to kill. Hensley goes on an angry tirade in which he says that Christians must be ruthless and violent when fighting Muslim "infidels" if they are to "destroy" them, which he claims is God's will. When Cutter asks if women who sleep with Muslims are also infidels, Hensley says that such women have broken God's law, and must be destroyed.
Cutter argues to the jury that Hensley caused the murder by exhorting his campers to violence, while Hensley's lawyer states that he is merely exercising his Constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of religion. The jury ultimately acquits Hensley on all charges, and he goes free, presumably to continue preaching at Angelgrove.
