Biography[]
Early life[]
In the mid-1980s, Schenkel and his cousin Carl kidnapped and raped eight teenage girls. They would kidnap their victims in public and hold them prisoner in their van; Ray would allow Carl to rape them first before taking over and raping and torturing them for several hours before finally letting them go. They were both finally arrested by NYPD Detective William Dorsey. Schenkel managed to pin the blame for all but one of the rapes on Carl, putting him in prison for life. In return for his testimony, Schenkel was sentenced to 21 years in prison.
"Demons"[]
Hours after Schenkel is released from prison, a teenage girl whom he sat next to on the bus home is attacked and raped. Dorsey, now retired, goes to the NYPD's Special Victims Unit with his suspicions that Schenkel committed the rape. SVU Detective Elliot Stabler is immediately suspicious of Schenkel, so he goes undercover as paroled sex offender Elliot McAvoy to find out whether Schenkel is responsible for the crime.
Stabler, as "McAvoy", befriends Schenkel and attends sex offender therapy with him, offering a fake confession of having molested his teenage stepdaughter. Stabler then takes him on a joy ride in a car provided by the NYPD. During the ride, Schenkel is tempted by an undercover female detective who looks like a teenage girl, but resists. Later on, he attends a therapy session with Stabler, and takes him along on another joyride - this time, with a kidnapped teenage girl in the backseat.
Schenkel and Stabler drive to an isolated warehouse, where Schenkel tries to force Stabler to rape the girl right in front of him. Stabler buys time by claiming to have "performance anxiety", and signals his partner, Detective Olivia Benson, while Schenkel's back is turned. After Stabler lets the girl get away, Schenkel pulls a gun on him, at which time Stabler identifies himself as a police officer. Schenkel holds Stabler hostage and taunts him by saying that they are just alike. He then engages Stabler in a brief gunfight, but Stabler manages to subdue him long enough for Benson and fellow SVU Detective Fin Tutuola to arrive and take Schenkel into custody. Schenkel is then imprisoned for life for rape and kidnapping.
