He was married to Mary Ellen, winning her over with a painting while they were dating. The pair went onto have a family, consisting of two daughters. Abbott seemingly had an impeccable record in his legal duties as an A.D.A. He remained in his rank as County prosecutor for two years.
Unknown to all, he was secretly a closeted gay man who had several affairs with other men, who were also closeted but married to women. He later formed a relationship with his colleague Jeff York. At one point, he got infected with HIV, courtesy of Jeff and he unknowingly infected his wife with the STD.
"Lowdown"[]
One night, York told Andy that he was tired of living in secrecy and wanted to come out. He wanted Andy to do the same and leave his family, so they finally be together but Andy wasn't ready to admit his sexuality and voiced how he never wanted to leave his family because he loved them. This led to an argument with York, who soon started threatening to oust Andy. Infuriated, Andy fell into a blind rage and strangled York, ultimately killing him. Realizing what he did, Andy placed the body in the car and stole his belongings to make it seem like a botched robbery.
Novak and Mary Ellen visit Andy in prison, as his lawyer believes this is harassment, but Mary revealed she asked Novak to come. Andy questions his wife, who brings up how she fell in love with him and how their lives have been nothing but bliss before she reveals her infection. She told him that she forgives him for that but can't forgive him if he doesn't own up to his crimes because a trial will bring about disaster to the family. Breaking into tears, Andy apologizes for infecting her and not coming clean about who he really was before confirming the affair and what led to the murder.
Seeing his genuine guilt, Novak offered up a deal of first-degree manslaughter that entails his allocates and serves seven years in prison while the case details are sealed. Andy accepts and agrees to drop the complaint against Novak, at his wife's behest.
He is subsequently disbarred and imprisoned.
