The Attack[1][2][3] (攻撃こうげき[4] Kōgeki?) is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a basic melee technique that includes simple punches and kicks to combat enemies and breaking objects.

Description[]

In each different game, Attack comes as a simple move prompt with punches or kicks performed by the playable character to hit the target that can be either an enemy, object or obstacle. It can be performed both in idle position or in mid-air. The player can do one or more button prompts multiple times in single linear pattern to perform Combos on the target. While leaping to the mid-air, the player can perform the Attack. The range of the Attack varies based on the playable character in each dedicated mainline game.

In gameplay, the playable character will perform one or multiple punches based on how many times the player presses the action button in one time. while it is possible for enemies to block the multiple Attacks depending on the timing. Certain enemies or bosses can block or simply cannot be hit by using the Attack and thus it has to be damaged with different, powerful moves.

Game appearances[]

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the simple combat technique called Attack[1] (攻撃こうげき[4] Kōgeki?) is one of the basic actions used by Shadow the Hedgehog in the main game and Shadow Androids in the Battle Mode against enemies or breakable objects. When performing the move either on the ground or in the air via multiple button inputs, Shadow will do three combat attacks in quick succession: a short left-handed punch, a short right-handed punch and finish it with a Crescent Kick with his right limb on the ground or a Jump Kick in the air.[5] As this happens, his arms and limbs will stretch towards the direction where the player aims his punching and kicking movements. Despite this, his combat moves have relatively short range and do little damage to the enemy/boss.

To perform the move, the player has to simply press SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Square/XboxX. When they press the button once, Shadow will only do one punch, and with multiple button pressings, he will perform two or all three combat moves at one time. When the black hedgehog is equipped with a weapon in the Stage, the player can fire it by pressing down the same button when performing the Attack.[1][5]

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version and Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed, the Attack[2] (攻撃[6] Kōgeki?) is one of the basic moves used by Sonic the Werehog in nighttime stages, Town Stages and boss battles. The player can perform multiple punches on enemies or breakable objects, as Sonic's arms are stretching long towards the direction he's punching.[7][8] As such, the player has medium range towards the enemy or object. It can also done in the mid-air after performing the Jump/Double Jump or leaping from the edge of the Stage terrain. While in the midair, Sonic will remain slightly longer while punching the air. Some enemies towards later in the game are able to block the Attack.

In gameplay in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, there are two types of the move based on the button input and movement's direction: the circular attack[2] (フック攻撃[9] Fukku Kōgeki?, lit. "Hook Attack") has the Werehog throwing his right and left punches via hook pattern at a time. When this occurs, his palms are wide open and his fingers create bright purple trails when performing the move at rapid pace. Using the circular attack will provide damage on enemies in a wide area around Sonic.[2] The straight attack[2] (ストレート攻撃[9] Sutorēto Kōgeki?, lit. "Straight Attack") has Sonic pull up straight punches that do heavier damage to enemies in front of him.[2] When performing, he is also seen glowing purple aura around his fists.

When performing the move, the player has to press Square/XboxX to do circular attacks, or PSTriangleButton/XboxY to perform straight ones. They can also hold down the circular or straight attack button to build up a charged attack with single powerful punch.[2] Once they start pressing either circular or straight attack button multiple times while creating Combos, they can mix it with other button inputs to perform different Skills after them being unlocked.

Two-Handed Attack

In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed, the move's functionality is altered drastically to fit for different motion control and button configurations on the Wii, as well for the PlayStation 2 controls. Here, there are three simple types of the Attack: left-handed attack makes Sonic the Werehog provide basic punches from his left arm, right-handed attack makes Sonic to same punches with his right arm and two-handed strong attack makes Sonic use both arms.[10][11] While using Dash, the player can also use either left or right-handed attack to punch enemies with either hand while in motion. Doing this will make the enemy stunned for short amount of time to provide good change for the player to strike back.

To perform one of three attack types in gameplay, the player has to do the following motion control or button prompts:

Movement Wii PlayStation 2[12]
Wii Remote
& Nunchuck[13]
Classic
Controller[14]
GameCube
controller[15]
Left-handed attack Shake Nunchuck Wii-classic x button L Square
Right-handed attack Shake Wii Remote Wii-classic y button Rgame Circle
Two-handed strong attack Shake Wii Remote + Nunchuck Wii-classic a button L + Rgame Cross

At the beginning of the game, it is only possible to create a maximum of three-hit Combos by normally performing the left- and right-handed attacks in different orders. As the game progresses and more Skills are unlocked by gaining Experience Points, the player can perform a number of Combos with multiple different Skills being mixed to the moveset. After being unlocked, they can also perform the Were-Hammer when executing the two-handed strong attack.

In Sonic Frontiers, the regular combat technique called Attack[3] (攻撃[16] Kōgeki?) is one of the basic moves utilized by Sonic and Super Sonic during the Open Zone gameplay. The former is seen performing series of punches and kicks to hit breakable objects, enemies or bosses. As this happens, the hedgehog's arms and limbs are seen stretching while reaching to the target. When Super Sonic becomes playable against Titans, his chain combo attacks with punches and kicks are additionally depicted with large afterimages of multiple, golden fist gloves and shoes with light trails by his side from further away in a widescale fight.

In gameplay, Sonic will perform the Attack normally, when the white target cursor dedicated to Homing Attack, is not visible automatically on the object, enemy or boss in the Open Zone field. Simply pressing Switch y/Square/X button multiple times will make him do a series of five chain combo attacks. The first four combat strikes include the hedgehog doing two straight punches and two kicks in turn, followed by the fifth kick with a brief interval. The fifth strike is depicted differently based on the direction the player holds the joystick in:

  • Up - Sonic performs a backward sideflip followed by a vertical side kick.
  • Down - Sonic performs a swift axe kick from a frontward somersault, similar in fashion to the Sonic Eagle.
  • Left/Right - Sonic performs a leftward spinning back kick.
  • Neutral - Sonic briefly spins backward and dashes forward with a dropkick.

Right after the fifth strike, the player can continue delivering another set of chain combo attacks in an endless pattern by further pressing Switch y/Square/X button. As the player repeats the process on the target, they build a combo as depicted on right side of the in-game HUD meter. The combo meter resets back to zero if Sonic takes damage.

When the white target cursor on the enemy or boss appears during a close combat, the player can perform the Homing Attack to reach the target at high speed and then start executing chain combo attacks right away. The player can directly use the Attack at its target after simply approaching closely to it. When fighting against the enemies, the player can also provide the first few hits, then quickly run or perform the Dodge in midair to move the other side of the target and continue the five hit chain combo attacks from the middle as long as the combo meter is present in the HUD. If the player stops the process and does not provide another hit into the target by using either Attack or any other move/Skill within five seconds, the combo meter resets to zero and the player has to begin a new combo from scratch.

In order to perform certain different Skills such as the Wild Rush, Stomp Attack, Quick Cyloop, Spin Slash or Cyclone Kick, it is required to do chain combo attacks at first to fill the combo meter and then execute different button combinations. Right after the Skill has been used, player can quickly move back to its target and then continue doing further hits by performing chain combo attacks. If the player can execute 20 chain combo attacks and fill up an additional gauge shown below the combo meter on the HUD, Sonic will be able to perform the Phantom Rush.[17]
