The Sub-Machine Gun[1] (短機関銃[2] Tanki Kanjū?), also formatted Sub Machine Gun,[3] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. A GUN-exclusive machine gun, it is a gun-type weapon usable to both enemies and the player.

Description[]

The Sub-Machine Gun is a black gun with a red dot on the front sight. Like other weapons in the game, the Sub-Machine Gun is massive in comparison to Shadow.

Game appearances[]

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Sub-Machine Guns can only be found in certain Stages. They can be wielded by enemies aligned with GUN, such as Big Foot-type foes and Gun Beetles, who will use them against the player.

Sub-Machine Guns can be dropped by defeated enemies that wield them or released from breakable Containers. Touching them will make the playable character pick them up automatically and pressing SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Square/XboxX (whether on the ground or in mid-air) fires them. Holding down SNNBGAMECUBEDISCO/Square/XboxX makes them fire continuously shots as well. As a gun, the Sub-Machine Gun can shoot enemies from a distance (targets within range will be automatically targeted). By comparison to other weapons, the Sub-Machine Gun has a short range and low damage output. A Sub-Machine Gun has a total of twenty shots and once those run out, it becomes useless. However, it can be reloaded with another twenty shots by picking up another Sub-Machine Gun.

Shadow the Hedgehog Flash[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog Flash, the Sub Machine Gun is a weapon usable by Shadow the Hedgehog.

Trivia[]

  • The Sub-Machine Gun is modeled after the Heckler & Koch MP5, judging from the select fire markings and the overall design of the gun.
  • When Shadow loads the Sub-Machine Gun in the opening movie of Shadow the Hedgehog, he pumps the grip as if it were a pump-action firearm, something that has never been a feature of any MP5. This is most likely the result of Sonic Team using a cheap, spring-fired airsoft MP5 as a reference, as real firearms are near-impossible to acquire in Japan due to extremely strict anti-hardware laws.
    • This weapon flub would become a minor meme among the community, and would be referenced for VR game H3VR's April Fools 2023 update, which introduced a pump-action MP5 dubbed the MP5 Shadow.
  • When Shadow loads a magazine into the gun in the opening movie, it appears to use the controls of an AR-15 platform, which is incorrect for the MP5. It is somewhat reminiscent of the SIG MPX, a gun similar to the MP5, though this is purely coincidence as the MPX would not be designed until 2013.
