Guardians are very powerful. They are bigger than normal enemies and have special attacks. Study their moves to find an opening. Tip: When an enemy is targeted, lock on to them by pressing
Guardians[3] (守護神[4],Shugoshin?, lit. "guardian deity") are a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are large and powerful robots made of digital energy that were created by the Ancients that are commonly found roaming the Starfall Islands.
There are multiple guardians with varying appearances and sizes in each one of Starfall Islands. They also have different special attacks that they use against their opponent.[3] Much like Titans, Sage can prompt guardians to act aggressively towards their target.[2]
In Sonic Frontiers, guardians serve as regular bosses during the Open Zone gameplay. Depending on each type, they can be found either stationary, roaming or flying a certain route on the Open Zone field or being transported to the arena via digital wormhole before the player approaches towards one. Guardians can be located in the Open Zone map depending on how much the map has been revealed after solving Challenges, but it is possible to encounter them freely without using it. While encountering the guardian, the player can retreat from the fight at any given time, as challenging it afterwards after retreating will keep the current amount of health on the Health Gauge intact. If Sonic with no Rings is taken down, the game restarts the fight with the guardian's Health Gauge being fully restored.
Each guardian holds a Portal Gear in their possession, that the player receives after successfully defeating it.[5] However, some guardians do possess more than one Portal Gear, as damaging them from certain spots will make drop them for the player to be obtained. With Portal Gears, the player can gain access to Cyber Spacestages.
Guardians are able to rebuild themselves when a Starfall occurs [6], in which the guardians can be refought and will have a blue star marked next to their health gauge.
According to Sage, the shape of each guardians references to the other four tribes of the Ancients, which had perished before the remaining survivors escape to earth and to honor and avenge their fallen comrades.[7]
The Ninja and Tower's variants seem to share the same color and theme depending on their class of difficulty and strength, reflecting the color changes of the Soldier enemies:
Shinobi and Excavator sharing half the color grey, from the previous variant, and half the color purple.
Kunoichi and Red Pillar sharing the color red, with grey stripes, with a rectangular shape on them.
Master Ninja/Master Ninja+ and Silver Hammer sharing the color white, with grey stripes, with some sharp shapes on them.
It was planned that Master Ninja, Silver Hammer and Spider would also have a golden variant, but it was ultimately scrapped. If it weren't scrapped, Spider would have been the only one to share only two variants alongside Ninja and Tower as of their Chaos Island variant.
However, as of The Final Horizon, Spider received an Ouranos Island variant named "Spider+". The color of the Guardian itself is identical to those of Silver Hammer and Master Ninja/Master Ninja+.
