There's no mistake about it. This must be the island. It's a secret military base that is reinforced and super strong. It's called "Prison Island".

Miles "Tails" Prower, Sonic Adventure 2

Prison Island (プリズンアイランド Purizun Airando?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a large jungle island used as a prison and research base by the Guardian Units of Nations. The island had several facilities, including a port for military vessels and an armory within the jungle. The main base contained several prisons (hence the name), and also had six levels of security, the highest of which contained Shadow the Hedgehog's cryogenic pod.

After freeing Shadow, Dr. Eggman and his ragtag crew of Shadow and Rouge managed to infiltrate Prison island and blow it up. Although destroyed, the island remained as a toxic waste dump.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

First seen in Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman first came there to find G.U.N.'s secret weapon, which turned out to be Shadow the Hedgehog. Some time later, Sonic the Hedgehog was captured by G.U.N. due to a misunderstanding and imprisoned deep inside the island in Gerald Robotnik’s old cell, but he was quickly rescued by Miles "Tails" Prower and Amy Rose. At the same time, Shadow, Eggman and Rouge the Bat attacked the island in order to take G.U.N.'s Chaos Emeralds. They succeeded and planted several Eggman Bomboms on the island, blowing it up as everyone escaped.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, it is revealed that Eggman's explosives had only destroyed G.U.N.'s main base and spilled toxic waste into the rivers. G.U.N. still has some overgrown paths and prison cells in the jungle and they use them to hold captured Black Arms soldiers. In the game, Charmy Bee goes to the island to look for some hidden data disks on behalf of Vector the Crocodile and the player can choose to help him find them.

Books and comics[]

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Prison Island appears as a essential location to Shadow the Hedgehog's backstory. It was visited by Sonic the Hedgehog, who would fight Shadow in White Jungle before Dr. Eggman announced that the island would be exploding soon, which shortly after did.

After the Super Genesis Wave rewrote history, Prison Island became virtually identical to its game counterpart.

Trivia[]

  • Numerous prisons in the base bear heavy resemblance to ones in real-life's Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary.
    • Additionally, its status of being a military prison makes it similar to Guantanamo Bay, a U.S. military prison on the island nation of Cuba.
  • Knuckles is the only playable character in the Story Mode of Sonic Adventure 2 that does not visit Prison Island, nor does he play a stage there.
