A pellet is a crystallized chunk of nectar that contains vitamins and other nutrition. They are formed by Pellet Posies, and are sometimes present on the ground, though certain enemies can yield pellets as spoils upon death. Pellets are used to produce Pikmin, by bringing them to the Onion. There is one color of pellet per main Pikmin type, with few exceptions.
Pellets come in a variety of sizes, and a number is present atop each one, reflecting its weight. Pellets with the numbers 1, 5, 8, 10, and 20 exist, although 40-pellets can be seen in some Pikmin 1 prerelease footage, and some fanon media may have pellets with different numbers. If the color of the pellet matches the color of the Onion it is delivered to, that number of Pikmin is produced, the exception being the number 1, which creates two Pikmin. If not, only half that number, rounded up, will be ejected.

Pellets are returning items appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. Aside from 1-, 5-, and 10-pellets, 20-pellets make a return, and there is a new addition of the rainbow pellet and the 100-pellet. Rainbow pellets produce Pikmin of a random type when delivered to the Master Onion, but are otherwise identical to other pellets. In the Death Den, a 100-pellet can be seen up close, but it is soon destroyed by the Mockwraith after it drops from the ceiling. Story Mode features only red, yellow, blue, and light gray pellets, as all four corresponding Pikmin types have their own Onions. Pellet colors featured in alternate game modes include purple, white, gray, pink, cyan, green, brown, lavender, black, orange, almond, and, exclusively to Timed Mode, periwinkle and aquamarine. The "rare" pellets always produce the Pikmin type their color is no matter if there are more Pikmin of another color carrying it, though if there are more Pikmin of its color carrying it, the rare pellet will give more seeds like other pellets. White pellets are notable for having a black numeral, and aquamarine pellets are made out of voxels.
After completing the entirety of Story Mode, all pellets for all Pikmin types can be found in it.
Notes
Olimar's notes
- “Them being the crystallized nectar in a cylindrical shape like some sort of coin, I just decided to name them pellets. Every time the name comes up, the Ship begs me to rename them bottle caps, apparently to no end. Anyways, the pellets are used as the basic way to produce Pikmin when brought to the Onion, absorbing the object, it will eject a basic amount of Pikmin depending on the pellet's size. There are only three colors of pellets found so far. But now I wonder if there could be more colors of pellets. Just look, there are only three Onions, at least as I write this, and all other types don't have that same thing, but could the Master Onion produce those rare Pikmin? Who knows, maybe one time, I'll find out.”
Louie's notes
- “I bet it's edible.”
Hocotate Ship's notes
- “Because of the pellets' shape, bottlecaps would have been a great name for them, but apparently someone we already know decided that pellets were a much better name. Maybe, for once, I can be allowed to rename something, like pellets for instance.”
In Pikmin III
This article or section presents information pertaining to Pikmin III, a fanon game created by A Friendly Amprat. |
Pellets appear in Pikmin III in the same manner as in past games, but there are a few new notable features regarding pellets in this game. They can now be found in caves. This includes pellets dropped from enemies, found on the ground or on ledges, and growing in Pellet Posies, which also now appear underground. Since the Onions do not follow the Pikmin underground, any collected pellets will be delivered to the Recon Satellite instead, which has no apparent use for them other than getting them out of the way...
A new type of pellet is the dud pellet. These pellets appear similar to 1-pellets but are a bit smaller, lack any sort of number on them, and have a dull tan color. Dud pellets contain low amounts of useful nutrients, and as a result, they only produce a single seed no matter which Pikmin type collects them. Dud pellets are never found in Pellet Posies, instead only being found as a somewhat common drop from defeated enemies, typically less healthy ones, in the place of regular pellets. Dud pellets and dud pellet piles can be found underground as well. Dud pellets are also known to be dropped from Dusty Mushrooms occasionally, around one in five times, making it somewhat worth it to destroy these mushrooms for a few more Pikmin sprouts. Furthermore, much like wood chips, dud pellets can sometimes be found in large piles of five or more, each of which can be carried by a Pikmin to create a new Pikmin sprout. Much like other collectible piles, dud pellets in piles will not re-appear once collected.

A pellet is a helpful resource appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. As crystallized chunks of nectar, pellets serve as a vital source of nutrients for Pikmin and enemies alike, and so they are highly sought after by both. Pellet Posies, Thorned Posies, and Weeping Posies are their most common source, though they may also be regurgitated from defeated enemies of a size larger than them, or even less commonly, sitting around the environment. Regardless of their source, pellets can be found aboveground and underground, though larger pellets are less common than smaller ones. If subject to damage, pellets will develop cracks, chipped parts, or scorch marks depending on the source, and too much damage will destroy them, rendering them useless; crushing forces are especially destructive to pellets. Larger pellets are far more difficult to destroy than smaller pellets. Unlike Pikmin, their candypops, and their Onions, pellets of a certain color aren't resistant to any of the more destructive hazards they are.
Pellets are circular and rounded, almost resembling a medicine tablet, and may be of various colors and sizes. They also have a slight translucency. A pellet's size coincides with the raised numeral on its front face: 1, 5, 8, 10, 20, or 40. 1-pellets are the smallest, but still large compared to a leader, and 40-pellets are the largest. The numerals on them match the color of the petals of the Pikmin they are for. While attached to a posy, pellets change color every few seconds at regular intervals, the sequence reflecting that in which each color's respective Pikmin type is discovered. However, this will not be the case for posies located by the site of a Pikmin's discovery or Onion, as the color of their pellets will remain static.
When delivered to an Onion, a pellet will yield a number of seeds according to its number, which also indicates its weight. If delivered by Pikmin or to the Onion the same color as it, that amount of seeds will be produced; otherwise, only half that amount, rounded up. The only exception to this is with 1-pellets, which yield 2 seeds when matched with Pikmin or an Onion of the same color and only 1 otherwise. As with corpses, pellets that are delivered to the Lander Pod may be used to either propagate Pikmin or gain pokos and extra sparklium, but when used to propagate Pikmin, pellets will automatically be used to increase the population of the Pikmin the same color as them.
In ultra-spicy difficulty, pellets are generally harder to come by, and larger sizes are more difficult to find. Additionally, they seem more brittle, not able to take as much damage before breaking.
Notes
- Data file #1 (all difficulties): Pellets are essential to the growth of Pikmin populations.
- Data file #2 (all difficulties): Pellets can be found from posies and enemies, and even sitting around.
- Data file #3 (all difficulties): The most seeds a pellet provides is indicated by the number on it.
- Data file #4 (all difficulties): Always try to match Pikmin and pellets by color for the most gain.
- Data file #5 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Pellets aren't too common and don't take much effort to destroy.
