Attacks Steals objects, produces lubricant

The Giant Buttery Breadbug is a breadbug appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. The Buttery Breadbug is its adolescent form, and both live underground in Balmy Highlands. Giant Buttery Breadbugs actively explore portions of the sublevel accessible to them, trailing a slippery transparent yellow substance while they roam and ignoring any Pikmin and leaders that come by. The only treasures, fruits, and other objects remaining in the open in those locations are ones too heavy for the Giant Buttery Breadbugs to move, which are very few, or they could not reach, as the rest are within the distinct, leafy dens they dug in soft ground. Upon spotting a subject of interest, a Giant Buttery Breadbug will pause briefly to make a wide-eyed, slack-jawed face of surprise at it, then march directly toward it, hoping to drag it, backward, to its den. It can only drag objects that can be carried by up to a minimum of 20 Pikmin, repeatedly tugging at and unearthing anything partially buried, even targeting any that Pikmin are currently handling or digging up. It will disappointedly release its grip on an object it can not move, ignoring all instances of that object from that point onward. If a Giant Buttery Breadbug takes a corpse or pellet into its den, any health it might have lost will be restored. Objects a Giant Buttery Breadbug brought into its den can be recovered at any time by sending Pikmin in much like it were a soil mound, the Pikmin digging out everything it brought in except corpses, pellets, and spiderwort berries, things that would have been eaten or have spoiled, though the sparklium from corpses and pellets is still surrendered. A Giant Buttery Breadbug will fight over its item with a dweevil that tries to take it, always winning eventually. Giant Buttery Breadbugs also go after leaders that are lying down, but leaders they grab stand up in panic, and the involved breadbug will be startled in response and not interact with leaders in that way again.

Having the typical and appropriately large physiology of adult breadbugs, the Giant Buttery Breadbug resembles a legged, rectangular loaf of bread with a rounded top. It has light skin, a round snout, and white eyes. Its green-speckled, yellowish blubber glistens and drips with its discharge and has a lighter base. Its two-toed feet are the same yellowish color as its blubber and with short, stubby claws.

A Giant Buttery Breadbug may be big, but that doesn't make it an easy target. The lubricant can make approaching one in the first place difficult in cramped quarters, especially with the girth of the trail. Pikmin charged at it will target its legs but inevitably end up slipping and unable to take further action. Pikmin thrown at its face will latch on, but it will not hesitate to flick them off in a few swift motions. The rest of its body is protected by its blubber, but there are options. Rock Pikmin are effective as they can harm a Giant Buttery Breadbug from any angle and with minimal splattering. With added elevation due to its low throw arc, landing a Purple Pikmin on a Giant Buttery Breadbug will inflict major damage and knock it down for a brief moment until it slowly rises to its feet to continue on its way, though this also produces a large splatter. Doing this will also force it to let go of an object and temporarily keep its distance. Trying to overpower a Giant Buttery Breadbug by directing Pikmin to an object it is dragging is more trouble than it's worth, as the lubricant will be trailing underneath the object in question, making it practically impossible for grounded Pikmin to keep a hold of. Winged Pikmin are best for this as they travel through the air and thus are not subject to the lubricant unless they are somehow forced to the ground. Should the Giant Buttery Breadbug somehow be overpowered from the ground, possible only with Purple Pikmin, the creature can dig its heels into soft ground to slow them slightly. In this process, the Giant Buttery Breadbug will be slowed and eventually immobilized as more Pikmin grab on. Almost the maximum amount of Pikmin that can carry the object at once is often enough. When the object is beamed up by the Lander Pod, or Onion in some alternate game modes, the Giant Buttery Breadbug, still holding on, will be pulled along with, moderately damaging the creature once its head slams into the bottom of it, splattering the place it hit and the ground it landed on. Beware its forward charge to bowl through Pikmin and leaders when it is sufficiently hurt, which creates a large splatter of its lubricant behind at the start of the charge. If the Pikmins' strength is insufficient to overpower it, the Giant Buttery Breadbug may try to shake them off the object, slightly enlarging the puddle at its feet. Pikmin dragged into the den will simply emerge alongside the Giant Buttery Breadbug moments later. When defeated, it utters one final cry as it falls forward, and goes limp. Its corpse will still drip with lubricant, but not to the degree it did while alive.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, Giant Buttery Breadbugs can drag objects that require up to a minimum of 30 Pikmin to carry.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): Giant Buttery Breadbugs leave a slippery trail wherever they go, making it hard to take objects from.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (all difficulties): When hurt, a Giant Buttery Breadbug's juices will splatter around it, making a big, slippery puddle.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #3 (all difficulties): When a Buttery Breadbug charges forward, it leaves a slippery puddle at the starting point.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #4 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Giant Buttery Breadbugs are almost impossible to take items from with grounded Pikmin.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png This specimen seems to produce even more lubricant as it ages. Given its girth and the often cramped quarters it inhabits, the ground behind it poses a great slipping hazard.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png Hopefully this gravy will last long enough to take a sip of! Hey– It's gone! Again! I-I'm going to have to talk to someone about this...

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png Like I said, this is a pet only for people that like to slide around the house. Looking at it makes me hungry...

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png Even more useless snot-butter... At least it smells good. I might tell the boss about making a new air freshener scent.

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png Olimar sometimes talks about a particular meal that Margot cooks up from time to time that has this apparent "garlic bread" as a side. This breadbug always reminds him of it, because the loaf was soggy with butter.
