The Dwarf Vampire Bulbear is a breadbug mimic and juvenile grub-dog appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. It is exclusive to Colossal Hollow's darkest caves, like the Vampire Bulbear, its larger counterpart or form. It is always in groups of 5 to 6 individuals, sometimes following a Vampire Bulbear. When by themselves, Dwarf Vampire Bulbears alternate between sniffing the ground and air around themselves, hoping to catch the scent of Pikmin or leaders, occasionally moving elsewhere in a large territory as a group to hunt there. When a Vampire Bulbear passes, the dwarfs will follow behind with an affectionate groan. When Pikmin or leaders approach, the group will quickly notice them with a harsh hiss and then pursue them for as long as they remain close enough. The dwarfs will flip Pikmin into the air to land them down their throat, but simply bite leaders. If they flee far enough, the dwarfs will begrudgingly resume their hunting where they stand, setting a new territory. Dwarf Vampire Bulbears always act as a group, moving together and attacking in numbers, alerting each other with a hiss to coordinate movements and attacks.

Dwarf Vampire Bulbears share the typical bulbear physiology and horrifying visage of their superiors, being larger and bulkier than bulborbs and having a rounded snout, protruding nostrils, pronounced lips, and rotund backside. It has pale white skin, a jet-black rump with almost glowing red spots, a pair of small eyes supported by short, stocky eyestalks, two sets of fangs, and black bi-clawed feet. As well, it has white pupils, red irises, and black sclerae, the latter two of which seem to glow in the extreme darkness the creatures thrive in. The spots of the breadbug mimics vary slightly in size compared to the consistently sized spots of the true grub-dogs and their lips are noticeably less plump.

Dwarf Vampire Bulbears are dangerous to take on, especially with a Vampire Bulbear involved. Charging or swarming Pikmin at the dwarfs is a viable strategy, but beware of it recovering health by eating Pikmin and biting leaders. Unlike with bulborbs, landing a Pikmin on top of a Dwarf Vampire Bulbear will not crush it unless a Purple Pikmin is used, as all others will simply latch on and begin pummeling. A major weakness Dwarf Vampire Bulbears have is a strong aversion to light: the Radiant Illuminator can deter it from attacking leaders, a camera flash from the HocoPad can momentarily daze it, and a dazzling bomb rock can completely incapacitate it for several minutes. They will also stay away from sunlight that may be shining in, as well as Common Glowcaps and Colossal Glowcaps because they produce light. To get Pikmin off of itself, a Dwarf Vampire Bulbear may either shake its body or perform a swift backflip. A Dwarf Vampire Bulbear that is irritated by attacks or overwhelmed may shriek to attract the attention of nearby creatures, namely the Vampire Bulbear. Upon death, it will utter a low groan before collapsing, but if killed by landing a Purple Pikmin on it, it will die silently. Unlike their superiors, Dwarf Vampire Bulbears do not revive after death.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, Dwarf Vampire Bulbears, after biting Pikmin and leaders, it will bite again immediately after to catch more of them in its mouth if more remain in front of it. When overwhelmed, it may rear up and try to emit a supersonic screech to scare nearby Pikmin into a panic, though this always fails.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): A pack of Dwarf Vampire Bulbears will begin hunting anywhere they're led, including by the adults.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (all difficulties): Dwarf Vampire Bulbears regain some lost health for every Pikmin they eat and leader they bite.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #3 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Dwarf Vampire Bulbears are always eager to take another bite, and may try to scream when in danger...

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png Just as disturbing as the full-grown grub-dog itself, the dwarf vampire bulbear stalks the blinding darkness of its habitat, attacking any prey it can. When they grow old enough, the dwarfs fight to the death to claim the territory they were raised in until only one is left, which cannibalizes the remains. No breadbug mimic ever survives.

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png The adults are too barbaric to train, but these guys have a chance. A slim chance. You're better off just going for... I don't know, anything else on this planet. A dandelion, perhaps?

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png A whole group makes for a good meal. Prepare and cook just like the adult's meat. Because the dwarfs eventually eat each other, time for them is limited until breeding season.

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png To think that every vampire bulbear we've seen had been the survivor of such vicious infighting gives me the chills. Metaphorical chills, I mean. It might also be because this cave is a bit cold.
