"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. Let us do without formal greeting... You all die now."

— Feitan at the Underground Auction, in "September 1st: Part 2"

Feitan Portor (フェイタン=ポートオ, Feitan Pōtoo) is member #2 of the Phantom Troupe.[3] His physical strength ranked fifth among the group.[5] After defeating Zazan, Feitan became the de facto leader of the Troupe until Chrollo's return.[6][7]

Chap 123 - Feitan preparing to enter Greed Island

Feitan's manga appearance

Feitan is short, lean, and muscular. He has black, mid-length hair, grey eyes, and a pale complexion. He wears dark, baggy clothes and a bandana sporting the trademark skull crest over his mouth.

His spider tattoo has the number 2 on the spider's abdomen,[3] but the tattoo location has yet to be revealed.

In the 1999 anime adaptation, Feitan has dark blue hair and golden eyes.

Personality

97 - Feitan speaks inverted Japanese

Feitan speaking in his inverted language

Very proficient in the art of torture, Feitan is the Phantom Troupe's interrogator.[8][5] His speech usually consists of few words and poor grammar; when angered, he speaks a language of unknown origin, different from the common language of the world.[6][note 1]

Although he is very loyal to Chrollo, Feitan prioritizes the survival of the Troupe itself, being extremely loyal to the "Spider".[9] He is implied to be deeply involved with all Troupe activities, remembering exactly how long it had been since all the group’s members had gathered together, what had changed since then, and who the new members were. He appears to have considered Chrollo’s policy on Hisoka (back when Hisoka was still a member of the Phantom Troupe) to be too lenient, also having some level of distaste for Hisoka.[10] Like the other members of the Troupe, Feitan was nonchalant about his own potential death[11] and he's not above inhumane mass murder, most notably when he brutally massacred the Kurta Clan alongside his teammates. The gruesome murder of their dear friend Sarasa and thirst for revenge against the perpetrators have desensitized him to such atrocities.

97 - Feitan and Shalnark tease Phinks

Feitan and Shalnark teasing Phinks

Although he occasionally clashes with them, Feitan seems to get along well with the other members. He is particularly close to Phinks, with whom he partners during missions and competes to see who can get more kills. Some subtle moments also suggest that Feitan has a good friendship with Shalnark: he once assured Shalnark that Uvogin would not be killed so easily,[5] and the two were seen celebrating together after the Troupe’s successful plan at the auction.[12] He also seems to trust Shalnark's judgment, as he conceded on letting Gon and Killua leave after they were first captured, but only after Shalnark determined that it would be fine to do so. Feitan also displays a humorous side, shown when he and Shalnark tease Phinks after their respective battles against the Chimera Ants, with Feitan wearing an uncharacteristic expression on his face the whole time.[6]

50 - Feitan threatens Gon

Feitan threatening to torture Gon

As the Troupe's interrogator, Feitan once remarked that he felt "most sorry" for his victim,[8] indicating that he showed some signs of sympathy. Nevertheless, he is a sadist who enjoys inflicting pain, having planned to start his torture of Gon by ripping off his fingernails.[13] Another instance of Feitan's sadism was his maniacal laughter and mocking directed at Zazan while she was dying.[6]

In his younger days, it is shown that he was kind and caring towards his friends and the Meteor City children. He and Phinks befriended Chrollo after the show, impressed at his performance. He took great pride and joy in performing Mighty Sweepin' Power Cleaners voice-acting onstage and was having a good time rehearsing with his fellow troupe members.[14]

The brutal death of Sarasa caused him to develop a thirst for revenge on the culprits. So, he and the rest of the members (except for Sheila) agreed to follow Chrollo in the revolutionized Troupe, pledging their loyalty to him as their leader and embracing the darkness that will transform them into a gang of diabolical thieves.[15]

Feitan protecting his hometown

Feitan, growing up in Meteor City, was influenced by the conditions there, sharing remarkable bonds that have been described as "thinner than water, and yet thicker than blood".[16] This was also proven by the fact that the Phantom Troupe is a major asset in the defense of the city. Feitan was also one of the Spiders who defended the city from the Chimera Ants.[17]

Feitan seems to have mysophobia, since he refuses to consume anything that someone else had touched and/or spoken into.[18] He seems to not believe in buying to obtain what he wants instead of taking it outright, viewing it as against the ways of the Phantom Troupe.[19]

Background

Chap 395 - Young Feitan

Feitan in his youth

Feitan originated from Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts of the world. People who live there do not exist in any official records, and the existence of the city itself is known to very few people.[16]

One day, approximately fifteen years before his series debut, Feitan and Phinks saw Chrollo running with a videotape and cut him off on a motorcycle. They told him to give it back, hoping for new content, but he outsmarted them and gave them back the cassette found sometime earlier.[20] He later went with Phinks to see a screening of a Power Cleaners episode that Chrollo dubbed and even volunteered to be the Yellow Cleaner in future screenings after it was over.[14]

Young feitan

Feitan during Troupe's foundation

After one of his co-actors, who played the Orange Cleaner, was found dead in a forest, Feitan joined Uvogin and six of his other co-actors in pledging their lifelong loyalty to Chrollo.[15] Three years later, Feitan was present during the foundation of Phantom Troupe, along with Franklin, Machi, Pakunoda, Nobunaga, Uvogin, Shalnark and Chrollo.[16]

As a founding member of the troupe, he took part in the massacre of the Kurta Clan.[11] At one point, he nearly killed multiple Troupe members when he released his Pain Packer ability while they attempted to watch.[6]

Plot

Yorknew City arc

The Phantom troup arrive at York Shin City 2011

Feitan and three other Troupe members making their way to Yorknew City

On August 31st, Feitan is seen with Franklin, Nobunaga, and Machi as they walk through the Gordeau Desert to Yorknew City. When Nobunaga asks how long it’s been since the entire Troupe has gathered together, Feitan quickly replies with three years and two months, adding that members #4 and #8 have been replaced. When Hisoka is mentioned, Feitan says that he doesn’t like him and wonders why Chrollo allows him to do as he pleases. After Nobunaga praises Hisoka’s ability and strength, Feitan tells him to apologize for implying that Chrollo is afraid of Hisoka. Feitan and Machi quickly move out of the way when Nobunaga and Franklin clash over their disagreement about Hisoka. Machi wonders what Chrollo is planning, and as the two talk about items to steal, Feitan mentions that the auction will have the world's most dangerous and expensive game. After all the Troupe members meet inside an abandoned building, Chrollo tells Feitan and the others that they are going to steal all the items at the Underground Auction.[10]

Feitan and Franklin Auction

Feitan and Franklin taking over the auction

The following evening, Feitan roams the city streets with Franklin and Shizuku. After she loses to Gon in arm-wrestling, he chides her for being too weak and asks why she didn’t use her dominant arm. When she insists on trying again, he reminds her of their current job and that they will take what they want from the auction.[19] Wearing suits and bowties, Feitan and Franklin infiltrate the auction hall and take the stage as the Mafia members wait in their seats. After Feitan welcomes them and then announces that they will all die, Franklin begins to massacre the crowd with his Double Machine Gun. Once all the attendees are dead, Feitan laments that he didn’t have anything to do. As Shizuku cleans up the scene, Feitan notices one of the Mafia members still alive on the floor. He assures them that the Mafia will track down and torture their families, but Franklin quickly kills the man as Feitan mockingly asks him what family is.[21]

After the Spiders see that the auction vault is empty, Feitan tortures the auctioneer for information until he dies, learning that one of the Shadow Beasts named Owl entered the vault and somehow moved all the items after leaving empty-handed. As the Troupe members make their escape in a hot-air balloon, Chrollo instructs them to cause a big commotion to draw out the other Shadow Beasts.[8] After dozens of Mafia members track them to the Gordeau Desert and shoot down their balloon, Feitan assures Shizuku that she won’t have to clean up the massacre. Uvogin takes them on by himself while the other Spiders comment on the difference in strength. After Uvogin kills the Mafia members, Feitan tells the other Troupe members that four Shadow Beasts have arrived.[22] Like the other Spiders, he covers his ears in time to avoid being deafened when Uvogin kills Porcupine with his scream.[23]

Feitan during the Shadow Beasts fight

Feitan preparing to fight the Shadow Beasts

After Uvogin is captured by Kurapika, Feitan, Shalnark, Machi, Shizuku, and Nobunaga steal a car and chase the abductors. They come within sight of their vehicle, but Owl drops on their hood and shrinks the car with his Fun Fun Cloth. The Spiders manage to avoid the attack, except for Nobunaga, which Feitan attributes to his bad position. Five more Shadow Beasts arrive, which causes Feitan and Shizuku to consider that the person who captured Uvogin with chains isn’t a Shadow Beast. Stating they only need to ask them, Feitan readies for combat.[24] The Spiders kill the Shadow Beasts and learn that Uvogin was taken by the Nostrade Family. While the others go rescue him,[25] Feitan returns to the hideout with the captured Owl, torturing him and successfully retrieving the auction items. Later that night, as Feitan sits reading a book beside the tortured Owl, Shalnark asks him if Uvogin has returned. Feitan says that he hasn’t but assures him that Uvogin wouldn’t die so easily. However, Chrollo points out that Uvogin would have been vulnerable against the chain user, telling the others that if Uvogin doesn’t return by dawn, they will change their plans.[5]

50 - Feitan glaring

Feitan arguing with Nobunaga

On September 3rd, Feitan is at the hideout when Nobunaga, Machi, Phinks, and Pakunoda return with the captured Gon and Killua. He recognizes Gon as the boy Shizuku arm-wrestled previously and warns Franklin that trying to make her remember something she has forgotten is pointless.[26] After losing repeatedly to Nobunaga in arm-wrestling, Gon furiously turns the tables on him, causing Feitan to quickly restrain him. He asks Gon if he knows the chain user, and when Gon says that he already told him, Feitan prepares to torture him. However, he is stopped by Nobunaga, and the two argue begin to argue as they both activate their Ren. The others remind them that there’s no actual fighting within the Troupe, and they flip a coin to settle the dispute. Losing the toss, Feitan begrudgingly releases Gon. He then teases him and Killua when the Spiders are in favor of allowing the two boys to leave. When Nobunaga insists on them staying so that Gon can join the Troupe, Feitan says that Chrollo would never accept it. With the other Spiders except for Chrollo and Nobunaga, he then attends a meeting where Shalnark presents their new course of action against the Nostrade Family in order to find the chain user.[13]

Feitan-5

Feitan relaying Chrollo’s orders to Phinks

Feitan teams up with Phinks and tells him that Chrollo said to come to the Cemetery Building and unleash hell. As Phinks kills one of the Mafia members and asks where the other members are, Feitan replies that they are heading there and dispatching any guards as well. He also mentions that Chrollo wants them to make a big show of the massacre. Feitan and other members quickly massacre police and more than 2,000 Mafia members.[27][28] After the deaths of the Ten Dons,[29] they use Kortopi’s ability to fake the deaths of several Troupe members (including Feitan)[12] and to create copies of the auction items, selling the fakes at the rescheduled auction.[29] Afterwards, Feitan celebrates the triumph with the rest of the Troupe back at their hideout.[12]

On September 4th, Chrollo decides that it's time for the Troupe to leave the city, but Nobunaga insists that they go after the chain user.[16] Knowing that Nobunaga won't stop his vendetta against Kurapika, Chrollo uses his newly-stolen ability to write out fortunes for him and the other Troupe members.[11] Feitan and Pakunoda realize that the chain user must be a survivor of the Kurta Clan. In addition to Kortopi,[30] Feitan and Phinks are unable to have their fortunes told because Feitan doesn't know his birthday and Phinks doesn't know his blood type.[2] Hisoka uses his Texture Surprise to alter his fortune, ultimately convincing Chrollo to stay in Yorknew.[31] Later, they discover that the chain user is at the Hotel Beitacle thanks to Kortopi tracking the copied Scarlet Eyes they sold to the Nostrade Family the night before. Feitan's group remains at the hideout with Hisoka, Franklin, and Bonolenov while the others head to the hotel.[32]

57 - Feitan tries to eavesdrop

Feitan trying to eavesdrop on Pakunoda’s conversation

In Pakunoda's flashback remembering the formation of the Troupe in Meteor City, Feitan can be seen among the founding members listening to Chrollo's speech about the importance of the Spider.[33] After Chrollo is abducted by Kurapika, Feitan, Phinks, and Shalnark join the others in the hotel’s lobby. Feitan confronts Nobunaga about what he perceives as inaction until Nobunaga explains why they did not pursue the chain user. He then tries to eavesdrop when Kurapika contacts them, but after Pakunoda holds up the phone and Feitan hears that only Pakunoda can hear the details, he begrudgingly walks away. She is ordered to go to Lingon Airport alone while the other Spiders are to return to the hideout. Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark intend to go after her, against Nobunaga, Shizuku, and Machi’s wishes. Feitan tells Nobunaga that his way of thinking is an insult to the Spiders since even Chrollo would agree that the group itself should take priority. The Spiders are split into two groups, and the tension rises to the point where Nobunaga is ready to fight for the sake of Pakunoda and Chrollo. Shizuku defuses the situation by knocking Nobunaga unconscious. Kurapika calls them again to inform them that he has a way of knowing where they are and repeats his order, which the Spiders finally agree to follow.[9]

Confronting Paku

Feitan and Phinks confronting Pakunoda, Machi, and Kortopi

Feitan and the others return to the hideout, taking the captured Gon and Killua with them.[34][35] When Pakunoda returns and insists on bringing Gon and Killua with her to exchange hostages with the chain user, Phinks and Feitan prepare to fight her, Machi, and Kortopi, all of whom Feitan believes are being manipulated by the chain user. When Gon breaks free from his restraints in a fit of anger, Feitan prepares to confront him, but is stopped by Phinks. Franklin speaks up and convinces the others to follow the chain user’s orders for the time being and to allow Pakunoda to leave with the two boys, stressing that any more fighting will be the death of the Troupe.[36]

After successfully carrying out the hostage exchange, Pakunoda returns without Chrollo and fires six of her Memory Bombs into Feitan and five other members, quickly collapsing afterwards. Shizuku checks her body and confirms that she's dead, asking the others what happened. Phinks then explains everything to the others.[37]

Greed Island arc

Phinks and Feitan at the auction

Feitan and Phinks meeting Gon and Killua at the auction

On September 6th, Feitan and Phinks attend the Southernpiece Auction and are surprised to see Gon and Killua, who immediately run away. The Troupe members easily chase after them and tell the two that they have no plans to kill them and that they can’t kill Kurapika because it could result in post-mortem Nen. Feitan gives him a look, and Phinks realizes that he shouldn’t reveal anything else, assuring himself that Chrollo is looking for an exorcist and that they just need to wait. Phinks assures Gon and Killua that they are just there to enjoy the auction, adding that the other members have already returned home. After Gon asks about Pakunoda, Phinks tells the two that she died and was thankful to them, quickly turning around as he and Feitan leave.[38]

Latarza's Death

Feitan and Phinks after killing Latarza

By attending the auction, Feitan and Phinks discover that Battera has purchased multiple copies of Greed Island and is selecting players through tryouts. Later on the same day, they attack a car carrying a copy, kill the guards, and take it back to their hideout to play.[39] After Feitan enters the game, Machi, Franklin, Shizuku, and Shalnark ask about it, and Phinks invites them to play before entering as well.[40] After Shalnark, Shizuku, and Kortopi also enter the game and discover that Greed Island may be a place in the real world, they come up with a plan and decide to meet up with Feitan and Phinks afterwards. Feitan and Phinks are seen to have killed Latarza and taken his cards. Phinks suggests that they have a contest to see which of them can kill the most players, and Feitan agrees, reminding Phinks to take their cards first.[41] After the Troupe members meet up, they leave together and then travel by boat to the island in the real world. However, they are promptly detected by Eta.[42] Upon reaching the shore, they encounter Razor, who introduces himself as a Game Master. He informs them that trespassers aren't welcome and that they can come back using the right way. He then uses an "Eliminate" card to send them to six different locations on the Azian Continent.[43]

Phantom Troupe In Greed Island

Feitan and the others making their way to the real Greed Island

Even though they don't possess many cards, Feitan and Phinks’ hostile playing style has even the Bombers concerned.[44] Finally locating the exorcist Abengane with the help of their new member Kalluto, the Troupe has Hisoka make a deal with him so that he will remove Kurapika's Judgment Chain from Chrollo's heart. Phinks tells Hisoka to get the job done and stresses that they will pay whatever the exorcist asks.[45]

Chimera Ant arc

The Phantom Troupe arrive at Meteor City

Feitan and five other Troupe members making their way to Meteor City

During the Chimera Ant crisis, Feitan, Phinks, Bonolenov, Shalnark, Kalluto, and Shizuku all journey to Meteor City. On their way there, they discuss how the Chimera Ant invasion happened and why some of them came to the city. The Troupe is met by some locals who tell them about the self-proclaimed Queen making a nest near the city and wreaking havoc amongst the people, and how the assembly is currently dealing with it. Seeing that no immediate progress is being made, the Troupe take it upon themselves to solve the Chimera Ant problem, with Phinks assuring the officials that they will exterminate the Queen by the end of the day. The Troupe members approach the enormous nest and walk right in through the front door.[17]

With Kalluto surprised that they are going their separate ways, Phinks points out that he probably has abilities that he doesn't want the others to see. He also tells him that whoever kills the Queen first will become the acting leader. After the members split up, Feitan runs into Zazan and asks where the Queen is. Once Zazan confirms that she is standing right in front of him, Feitan upsets her by replying that her joke isn’t funny.[46]

He then pulls out his umbrella and opens it to divert Zazan’s attention, slashing at her with his concealed sword from the side. She manages to avoid taking damage, but her dress is ripped to shreds. She calls him a little boy and asks if he likes to hide things, with Feitan noticing her large stinger and adding that she also likes to hide things under loose clothing.[47] The two begin to fight, and although Feitan parries all of her attacks, he is quickly put on the defensive. Zazan laughs and tells him to come back when he can compete with her. Feitan acknowledges her criticism and says that he is out of shape, confidently adding that she will make good practice.[48] With the other Troupe members now watching his fight, Feitan dodges Zazan’s attacks so quickly that Kalluto is unable to follow the encounter. While Phinks comments that Feitan is fighting better, Bonolenov adds that he still isn’t at the top of his game.[49]

Feitan then picks up his umbrella and creates a series of afterimages to blindside Zazan. She manages to block his attack from behind with her stinger at the last second, noticing that he keeps getting quicker. Smiling, Feitan presses a button on the handle of the umbrella, firing its tip directly toward Zazan's face. However, the bullet only scratches her, causing Feitan to remark that she has tough skin. Now enraged, Zazan tears off her stinger and transforms into a larger creature. As Zazan threatens to kill him, Feitan exploits the opening and jumps on her back, using a Ko attack with his sword. However, her body has become so durable that the sword instantly breaks when it makes contact. Before he can rescind Zetsu, she hurls an aura projectile at him, shredding his clothes and causing him to cough up blood. Phinks and Shalnark explain to Kalluto what happened as Zazan claims that her body is indestructible and hits Feitan with a strong punch.[49]

Zazan Defeated - Episode 97

Feitan mocking the dead Zazan

As Zazan continues her barrage of attacks, Feitan’s left arm is suddenly broken by one of her strikes. After Phinks playfully asks if he wants to switch with Bonolenov, Feitan snaps and begins to speak in his mother tongue while activating Pain Packer. The other Troupe members begin to run away, explaining to Kalluto that the attack almost killed them the last time they tried to watch. With Feitan now wearing an elaborate outfit, Zazan wonders when he changed clothes and notes that he is much stronger than before. Feitan says that he will pay back the pain, transferring it into a miniature sun that rises up into the air above Zazan. As his Rising Sun incinerates Zazan to death, Feitan taunts her and laughs maniacally. Once the ability runs out, he comments that the heat was on the weak side and that her death would have been quicker if she had done more damage to him.[6]

The Troupe members then encounter the transformed Meteor City residents, who all beg to be killed. However, Phinks refuses to do so and orders them to show what spirit they still have left as Meteor City natives. The other members ready their weapons, including Feitan who draws his sword, and the Troupe members easily take care of the transformed residents and return to the city. They decide to stay and take care of any more Ants that appear, but Shalnark receives a text from Nobunaga asking for help. Phinks is left disappointed that it wasn't Chrollo contacting them and says that he hates having to wait. Shalnark and Feitan jokingly tell Phinks that he’s acting like a girl with a crush, and Phinks angrily tosses rubble at the two injured Troupe members as they run away from him.[6]

Succession Contest arc

Chap 371 - Spiders appear

Feitan, Phinks, Franklin, and Nobunaga confronting the Buor Family

On the second day of the Black Whale’s voyage, Feitan, Phinks, Franklin, and Nobunaga are seen aboard the ship confronting three members of the Buor Family in Tier 5. They force them to talk about Kakin's three Mafia families, with Phinks guessing that there's a middleman between the boss and the henchmen. Franklin tells the Buor Family members to call over the person who takes the cut, and one of them replies that the next meeting is planned for Saturday. Phinks then tells the Mafia members that their new mission is to find everyone taller than 6'2" and get their room numbers.[50]

On the fourth day of the voyage, the Troupe gathers together in the crowded central dining hall and discusses the situation regarding Hisoka. When the Cha-R Family claims the table for themselves, the Troupe leaves without a fight. Chrollo states that they will meet again at that table and orders them to bring him Hisoka's head, with the Troupe members going their separate ways.[3]

Nobunaga tells Phinks and Feitan that they will leave Tier 5 to the Buor Family and search for Hisoka on Tier 4. He plans to retrieve his weapon from the warehouse, and Phinks says that he needs to get something as well, with Feitan adding that his trick umbrella was smuggled in with the black market goods. Nobunaga wonders if the two are babysitting him, but Feitan and Phinks stress that they don't want to give Hisoka any chance to kill them. After arriving at the warehouse, the three encounter some henchmen of the Cha-R Family, one of whom leads them inside. As the man turns the corner, Nobunaga stops Feitan and Phinks, stating that he suddenly vanished from his En, with Phinks noting that he can no longer feel his presence. They walk down the corridor, which turns out to be a dead-end, and then hear a thud from behind them. They find the man lying dead on the floor with his throat cut open. Feitan and Phinks nonchalantly keep searching for the items on their own, ridiculing Nobunaga's concern and telling him that his priorities are weird. As the three continue to talk, the hitman Luini watches them from his portal in the ceiling and describes them as his idols, hoping that they can destroy the world together.[51]

Chap 379 - Commando Trio

Feitan, Phinks, and Nobunaga discovering that the warehouse guards are missing

After retrieving their weapons, the three return to the entrance and find that the other Mafia members are gone, but Phinks points out that one got away, noting a trail of blood and worrying that it's a trap. Feitan points out that the blood is dry and that it was done around the same time as the other one. Phinks then remarks that if someone had wanted to frame them as enemies of the Cha-R Family, the first corpse would have been enough. After Feitan points out that that’s true if the victim is alive, Nobunaga replies that the murders may be unrelated to them, and Phinks asks him if he believes multiple parties are involved. From Nobunaga's answer, he surmises that the culprit ran into them by chance and decided to use them, but switched back to his original plan when a fight didn't break out. They begin to follow the trail and surmise that Hisoka isn't involved, with Feitan explaining that the wound was shoddily made by something bigger than a card. As they guess that the culprit's target is the Cha-R Family, the trail ends at a locked door, and Phinks notices the two security cameras nearby, which he finds odd for Tier 5. After Nobunaga tries to open the door and finds that it's locked, the Cha-R underboss Ken'i Wang appears behind them with four armed subordinates. He asks if they are the ones who attacked the warehouse guards, but after the Troupe members say that they weren't involved, Ken'i receives a call from his subordinates about a man who entered their hideout with a wounded warehouse guard and yelled that the Spiders did it. Ken'i is annoyed that someone tried to manipulate the two groups into fighting and guesses that he was a hitman from one of the other families. Phinks speculates that they did so to fulfill an ability condition in order to teleport into their hideout at a later time, explaining the process in great detail and even mentioning Nen by name. While Ken'i asks the three Troupe members if they want to work together, he tells himself that they are dangerous and must be eliminated.[52]

Inside the Cha-R's hideout, after Ken'i and the Troupe members watch the surveillance footage, Nobunaga points out that the hitman will come to open the other door. Ken'i asks if they want to see what's inside, and Nobunaga refuses to do so for free, offering to kill the hitman. After Ken'i agrees, he introduces the Spiders to the other Cha-R members present. After telling them that the Cha-R has around 250 members on board, the supervisor Tsudonke recognizes the Spiders and keeps it to himself, wondering if he should ask them for an autograph.[53]

Chap 384 - Spiders and Cha-R

Tajao discussing Morena with the Spiders

On the seventh day of the voyage, Tajao, the assistant to the Cha-R boss, emerges from the locked room in the hideout, escorted by Ken'i. Phinks objects to the way Ken'i introduces them, making it sound like the Spiders are the ones who requested cooperation. After Ken'i gives Tajao his report, Phinks explains that they are looking for Hisoka, who was nowhere to be found in Tier 5. He says that the Troupe members will kill the hitman if they get permission from the Xi-Yu Family to allow them to search Tier 4. He is confident that the hitman will eventually return to access the passage leading to the upper tiers, perhaps in order to kill their boss. Tajao warns the three Spiders that an inescapable war might occur depending on where Morena is. He informs them of the rules that the families must follow, exasperating Phinks and Nobunaga. The two surmise that the most convenient course of action would be to kill Morena. Phinks urges Ken'i and Tajao to find her and assures them that the Spiders will come together to hunt down the hitman.[54]

On the tenth day of the voyage, after Onior confirms with Hinrigh that Hisoka isn't in Tier 4, he says that he can give the Spiders permission to search that tier.[55]

In the Cha-R's office on Tier 5, Nobunaga and Phinks are seen sitting across from each other while Feitan reads a magazine in a nearby bunk bed. As a Cha-R member watches surveillance footage, Nobunaga suggests getting Franklin and splitting into teams of two to search outside in shifts. Phinks guesses that he would turn them down since he hates cramped places, but Nobunaga replies that he will team up with Franklin while the two of them stay there. Feitan says that even though the enemy will be reluctant to attack the three of them together, they shouldn't lose their patience. In the front room, several Cha-R members hear a knock on the door and wonder if the search team is back, but the member watching the surveillance footage tells Vic not to open it as he quickly asks the Troupe members to come to look at the monitors.[56]

Chap 392 - Luini and the Troupe

Luini meeting the Troupe and expressing his disappointment

An arm is seen coming through an opening as the person knocks on the door. Phinks notes that he's toying with them when he could have taken them by surprise. The member points to another monitor and sees that the search team is returning. However, when they open the door to the front room, they find no one there, with Phinks guessing that they must have been taken. Nobunaga notes that it doesn't matter how many grunts are around if they can't use Nen. The member nervously wonders where his comrades are, but Nobunaga quickly orders him to stay in the other room and bolt the door, telling him to look for the search team on the monitors and let them know if anything happens. An opening suddenly appears on the front door, and Luini slowly reveals his face, telling the Troupe that they are acting so out of character since they should be betraying the Cha-R and using their door to the upper tiers so that they can kill all the rich scum. As Luini continues to voice his disappointment, both Phinks and Feitan react with utter disgust at his maniacal rambling, with the latter asking the extent of the Heil-Ly hitman's knowledge of their organization. Luini wonders if he should edit their wikipedia page since it currently says that they are diabolical thieves. Nobunaga quickly draws his katana and tells him to also add the line that they show no mercy to idiots that annoy them.[56]

After assuring the three Troupe members that he doesn't want to fight them, Luini proposes working together so that they can eliminate the Cha-R Family, the Xi-Yu Family, and Kakin's royal family before taking control of the Black Whale and returning to the old world to destroy it. However, Nobunaga suddenly lunges forward with his katana and stabs Luini in the head, saying that he isn't making sense and criticizing his pointless antics at the warehouse. He removes his katana and says that he will destroy him if he wants to destroy the world, striking Luini with his katana once again.[57]

Chap 393 - The Troupe vowing to destroy the Heil-Ly

The Troupe vowing to destroy the Heil-Ly

Tsudonke and his men return to the office, with Nobunaga opening the door for them. Hiding his excitement at Nobuanga's gesture, Tsudonke asks what happened to the other Cha-R members. Nobunaga reveals that they were all killed, leading them to Luini's decapitated and bisected corpse. With Tsudonke unable to believe the carnage, Nobunaga explains that they found the hitman who killed the guards at the warehouse, holding up his head and adding that they have decided to destroy the Heil-Ly Family. Feitan thanks them for their hospitality and says that the other door can wait. Phinks adds that while they plan to continue their search for Hisoka, any information on the Heil-Ly and the location of their boss will let them take care of that problem first.[57]

In the first-class cabins on Tier 3, Nobunaga and Phinks stand behind Feitan as he knocks on one of the doors. A man tells them that they should hand over their woman if they don't have the money, but as soon as he opens the door, Feitan draws his sword and holds it inches from his face. The three Troupe members enter the room, and while Nobunaga suggests starting on one wall, Phinks suggests another and says that the door might not be the only trigger, adding that they should start with the bathroom. He explains that since they were told the hidden room was much larger, all the rooms must be connected. A small map shows the three members in Room 3102 next to the trap in Room 3101. Nobunaga repeats that he doesn't care about the Heil-Ly's trap, but Phinks warns him that it could possibly throw them out into the ocean. Although Nobunaga counters by saying that the Heil-Ly wouldn't waste the chance at a direct kill, he agrees with Phinks' suggestion to start with the bathroom, unsheathing his katana and swiftly cutting a rectangle-shaped hole out of the wall. Feitan tells the man to enter first, but he nervously wonders what's inside and asks to get someone younger.[20]

Chap 395 - Feitan continuing to hold the Mafia member hostage

Feitan continuing to hold the Mafia member hostage

After Feitan moves the blade closer to his throat, the man begrudgingly enters the room that's only lit by two orb-shaped lamps on the floor. The three Troupe members enter behind him, and Feitan guesses that there were people there recently based on the food and drinks left behind. Phinks says that something doesn't add up if the Heil-Ly were competent enough to detect them and escape, wondering why they let a member who was a complete amateur confront them without warning him. Nobunaga guesses that they used him as a scapegoat to make sure the others stay on their toes, adding that they are similar to the Troupe and wondering if they were affected by the member's death. Phinks quickly replies that they are nothing alike since they don't allow amateurs and don't want to destroy the world. However, Nobunaga reminds them that they used to be that way in the beginning, saying that resignation and anger caused them to search for a purpose.[20]

In a flashback at Meteor City, after taking a videotape and running away from Uvogin, Chrollo hears an engine behind him and suddenly sees Phinks driving a motorcycle with Feitan riding on the back. Phinks cuts him off and says that unlike Uvogin, they promise to return the tape later if he hands it over nicely. After Chrollo calmly gives it to him, Phinks tells him not to mention it to Uvogin and adds that he actually meant a hundred years when he said later, laughing as he speeds away. Chrollo smiles and pulls out another tape from inside his shirt, and it's revealed that he actually gave Phinks Volume 20 of "Learning Gelman".[20]

Lisores announces that there will be a special screening at the church and welcomes many of the children with snacks. As Chrollo helps hand them out, Uvogin suddenly appears behind him and says that he hears he's putting his video to good use, menacingly adding that he's looking forward to after the screening. Phinks and Feitan then approach Chrollo, with the former saying that they should play soccer together if he survives his meeting with Uvogin. Phinks is left confused when Sarasa holds a bowl of snacks near his face, and she asks him to help hand them out. Phinks angrily wonders why he has to help, but when Lisores looks in his direction and Sarasa continues to hold up the bowl, Phinks quickly takes it and tells the rejoicing children to get their snacks if they haven't taken any, with Feitan slowly walking away from the situation.[14]

During the screening of the Mighty Sweepin' Power Cleaners, Feitan is just as enamored and surprised by Chrollo's performance as the other Troupe members. Later, he gives a slight smile when Sarasa pretends to dub Uvogin. When the members choose their parts, Feitan volunteers to be the Yellow Cleaner. He is then seen performing on stage and practicing fights with Nobunaga and Phinks.[14] When Sarasa goes missing, Feitan is seen with the Troupe members looking for her. He is present both when they find her and when she rests in her casket, putting a bouquet of flowers alongside her. He is present when the group decides to avenge Sarasa's death and nominates Chrollo as their leader. Finally, Feitan is seen with the other founding members years later as Chrollo explains the concept of the Spider to them.[15]

Chap 398 - The Heil-Ly's trap

The three Troupe members discussing the Heil-Ly's trap

Back in the present, the Mafia member is still held hostage by Feitan and asks if he can go back to his room after he opens another door. Phinks says no and tells him to go inside once he opens it. As the two argue over the details, the Mafia member says that the door is locked on the current side, but Feitan tells him to unlock it, threatening to give him another butthole if he keeps asking stupid questions. The member unlocks it and slowly opens the door to find no one inside the small bathroom. He finds that the next door is also locked and quickly says that he will open it once Feitan begins to move his sword behind him. With the second door open, Phinks wonders who locked it since it's the only entrance to the hidden room. Nobunaga says that if the old man does have a double, he could have easily locked the doors to the bathroom and hidden room and then disappeared.[18]

Feitan wonders what the point of it is, and Phinks guesses that they needed to stall for time, noting that they knew about the old man's ability and the hidden room beforehand. He says that if they had broken in through the front door, they would have been cautious and guessed that someone was hiding in the bathroom. However, Feitan points out that they couldn't have entered since the front door is the trap, and Phinks comments on Feitan also talking back.[18]

Chap 398 - Mafia member disappearing

The Troupe confirming the trap's activation

Nobunaga then realizes that the bathroom setup buys them time if someone figures out that the front door is a trap and decides to break through the wall of the next room like he did. Phinks says that it makes sense, and Feitan realizes that breaking through the wall won't trigger the trap, with Phinks adding that they can also enter from the bathroom. Nobunaga tells the Mafia member that he can go inside with no worries, and after saying to himself that he has no idea what the three are talking about, he walks inside the main room, with nothing happening. Phinks then tells him to walk out the front door, and the member again asks if he can go back to his room afterwards, but Feitan tells him to come back inside if nothing happens after he walks out.[18]

The member walks out, but when Nobunaga tells him to come back inside, he makes a run for it down the hallway. Feitan instantly appears in front of him and blocks his path, brandishing his sword and telling him to pick right or left. With the member left terrified, Nobunaga tells him to come back before both his ears get cut off, with Phinks adding that no one loses just their ears once Feitan starts. The member quickly returns to the room and immediately disappears once he enters. Feitan says that it activated even without the old man's double, and Nobunaga notes that there are no support objects in the room, guessing that it's a land mine type instead of a barrier. The two types are then explained: the barrier type involves setting up multiple traps over a wider area by supporting the ability's activation with Nen-imbued objects such as ropes or paper talismans. The land mine type involves setting up an activation switch directly with Nen at a specific location, and its strength limits it to two or three locations.[18]

Chap 398 - Another Mafia member disappearing

The Troupe using another hostage to test the trap

Phinks adds that the stronger a land mine type is, the closer the user has to be to the entry or exit point, guessing that the user must be near the place where the victims are teleported and that it's most likely their hideout. Nobunaga says that while they could deliberately fall into the trap to reach the hideout, there are more enemies and most likely more traps waiting for them. Phinks suggests confirming whether the trap can be activated continuously or just once, pointing out that they can simply wait for the user to appear if they have to reactivate each time. Feitan then knocks on the door of a nearby room and takes another Mafia member hostage. The man threatens to kill Feitan and warns them that he will say something to the Cha-R, but Feitan eventually forces him into the room where he immediately disappears. Nobunaga confirms that it's continuous activation, and Feitan says that Nobunaga's suggestion is the fastest way, volunteering to enter the trap first.[18]

However, Ken'i suddenly appears in the hallway and introduces Hinrigh as the Xi-Yu's underboss, revealing that he has a proposal for them. Hinrigh offers to help them locate the enemy's hideout and tells them to postpone their suicide mission until after listening to him. Ken'i explains that the Cha-R are following two suspected Heil-Ly members, revealing that they can trust Hinrigh since he found them and Room 3101. Hinrigh assures the three that the Xi-Yu have no issue with the Troupe and that the Kakin] Mafia values balance most of all, gladly offering to help them if they can destroy the Heil-Ly.[18]

Chap 398 - Hinrigh using his ability

Hinrigh revealing his ability to the Troupe

Thanking him for the offer, Nobunaga says that they are ready to leave, but Phinks doesn't agree with his decision, and Feitan asks how he knows where the enemy is. Hinrigh reveals a transmitter and explains that he can attach it to a decoy to find out where it goes, but Phinks points out that it's a massacre on the other side of the trap, adding that it would take less than five minutes for them to kill a civilian passenger, search their body, and find the transmitter.[18]

Hinrigh replies that it's why he will use his own ability, revealing that he can turn tools and machinery into living things before changing the transmitter into a raw oyster. He explains that if the decoy swallowed it whole, it wouldn't be found even if they stripped and cavity searched the body. He adds that it will turn back once the aura is depleted and that it all depends on the size of the object, guessing that the oyster will last around two hours. Phinks praises Hinrigh's idea since he doesn't want to join Nobunaga and Feitan, but when he turns around to see which of them wants to swallow it, both appear to want no part in the plan. Nobunaga reveals that just the taste of shellfish makes him vomit after a bad case of food poisoning, and Feitan says that he won't eat food that someone has touched or breathed on.[18]

Chap 398 - Hinrigh volunteering

Hinrigh volunteering to be the decoy

After telling them not to worry since he didn't expect them to trust him immediately, Hinrigh reveals that he already has a decoy and swallows the oyster himself, surprising all three Troupe members. He pulls out the beeping receiver and explains that it will give the distance to the transmitter and a rough direction. He adds that if they get closer to the transmitter, the sound intervals will become shorter and higher-pitched, and the bar's light will get redder, showing them the screen at zero distance. He emphasizes that while the maximum radius is one kilometer, it doesn't take altitude into account, explaining that if the direction is unclear, the transmitter is most likely above or below them. He hopes that he isn't killed and dissected but says that he will do his best to save the transmitter first. He then hands the receiver to Phinks and tells the group that he's counting on them, walking into the room and disappearing.[18]

Nobunaga says that he likes how straightforward Hinrigh is, and Phinks notices that the receiver changed, guessing that the transmitter is between 500 and 1,000 meters away. One of them wonders how big the ship is, and another says that the length is 1,500 meters and both the height and width are 800 meters. Feitan suggests heading to the center of Tier 3 since the bar will get redder if their hideout is there. Phinks wonders if the color won't change if the hideout is on the opposite side of the ship, but Nobunaga quickly replies that it would be over one kilometer and it wouldn't even pick up the signal. As the two begin to argue again, Feitan becomes annoyed and says that one of them needs to disappear.[18]

On Tier 3, Feitan and Phinks continue to use the receiver to look for the transmitter. Feitan notes that it's 100-200 meters away, and the direction is unstable, remembering that it means the device is directly above or below them. He adds that only Tier 2 and Tier 4 are possible, suggesting that they go down first. Phinks says that if they reach a certain point on Tier 4, they will know if they are getting closer or farther away. Feitan says that it would be easier to find if Phinks could use his En, but Phinks reminds him that it's a bad idea both technically and strategically to use it in the middle of the crowd, adding that he isn't good at using it since it gets interrupted when he hears someone's voice, or when something moves, or while he moves. He continues by saying that the best he can do is look for stuff in the warehouse and likens putting a number of unknown people in his En to walking around the slums naked with a "shoot me" sign on his back.[58]

Chap 400 - Nobunaga

Nobunaga rejoining Feitan and Phinks

Nobunaga meets up with them and is surprised to see them still wandering around. Phinks wonders why he came back so quickly, but Nobunaga says that they will talk about it later, asking if the transmitter is working. Feitan confirms that it is and adds that they have to find out if it's above or below them. Phinks tells him that he only left around 10 minutes ago, and Nobunaga is surprised. Phinks explains that they think the Heil-Ly's hideout is on Tier 2 and says that they can use the Cha-R Family's hidden door once they confirm it. A soldier gives the three Troupe members permission to pass, and Nobunaga tells him to let Hinrigh know that they went to the Cha-R's hideout. With his mind lingering on Tier 2, Nobunaga feels uneasy about the situation with the Mafia. Phinks then asks if he can figure out where the hideout is located on the ship, but Nobunaga replies that he can't since their boss created the space with Nen, adding that they need to stay alert.[58]

As the three head down to Tier 4, Feitan reacts to a change on the receiver, saying that the transmitter is getting farther away and that they can confirm the Heil-Ly's hideout is on Tier 2. Nobunaga realizes why he felt uneasy and says that it means the Heil-Ly's boss is in the upper tiers and wonders how the other two families are justifying the war. Phinks says that they shouldn't get involved in a dispute with the Mafia killing each other and one of the bosses staying in their hideout, adding that the Heil-Ly could be exploiting the ancient custom. Feitan says that they should head to the Cha-R's hideout now, but Nobunaga suggests at least taking Franklin with them, explaining that they still don't know how many Heil-Ly members there are and that he didn't expect their abilities to be so refined.[58]

As his mind lingers on exploiting the ancient custom, Nobunaga adds that while they seem like a group of punks, the Heil-Ly can be dangerous depending on their advisor's ability. Phinks then reminds him that the Mafia issue is just a sideshow until they find Hisoka. Nobunaga points out that they need to secure a route to the upper tiers so they can complete their search, adding that Franklin joining them will improve their chances if they happen to find him. Phinks realizes that his reasoning makes it more likely that he's obsessed with the Heil-Ly, and Nobunaga admits that one of the members seemed interesting, with Feitan telling Nobunaga that he likes the enemy too much. An emergency broadcast suddenly plays over the intercoms and asks everyone to pay attention to sad and unfortunate news.[58]

On the twelfth day, Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan make their way across Tier 3 towards the connection between Tier 3 and 4 as they hear the announcement of Halkenburg's death. Nobunaga asks if he was a benefactor for any mafia family, Feitan answers that he is not and Phinks tells Nobunaga to ignore the announcement and continue making their way to Tier 4. Nobunaga points out that they had time because Hinrigh had placed the transmitter where the Heil-Ly could not find it, and says that there is something he wants to check with the other two families before they headed to the Heil-Ly hideout. Phinks asks if it is about the Heil-Ly, and after Nobunaga says it is, Feitan says that asking was pointless because they would crush them anyway. Nobunaga responds by saying that what he wants to ask has to do with how they crush them, and that they might have to call the other spiders depending on what the answer was. Feitan says that Nobunaga was not making sense, and Phinks says that being charmed by the enemy is creepy. Nobunaga begrudgingly concedes that it might be unfounded, but he threatens to beat them up if he is correct.[59]

Feitan and Phinks follow Nobunaga to the Cha-R family hideout on Tier 5, and sit on a nearby couch as Nobunaga asks Ken'i and Tajao about their thoughts on who the Heil-Ly on the ship really were. Nobunaga suggests that the Heil-Ly are planning to destroy the Kakin Empire itself, and are killing to get the power. Phinks elaborates that using human sacrifices to obtain supernatural powers is a classic move, and Feitan explains that since they plan to kill everyone on board anyway, they used the number of people they killed as a condition to make more powerful Nen. Tajao says that it sounds crazy, but tells the spiders that the Xi-Yu and Cha-R would fully cooperate with them, and officially asks the spiders to crush the Heil-Ly. They accept his request, and Phinks asks him to tell the other spiders and Hinrigh.[60]

Tajao leads Phinks, Nobunaga, and Feitan down a tunnel hidden behind the secret door, which Phinks had previously guessed led to the higher tiers. Tajao turns a wheel to open it before telling them that things would get rough from then on. Phinks and Nobunaga remark in surprise at what is behind the door.[60]

Tajao leads Phinks, Nobunaga, and Feitan down a tunnel hidden behind the secret door, which Phinks had previously guessed led to the higher tiers.[60] As they walk, Tajao tells Nobunaga that he would keep his sword for him because the soldiers on Tier 2 would not ignore it, and when Nobunaga complains about being singled out, Feitan adds on to Phinks comments telling Nobunaga to listen and calls Nobunaga's weapon a makeshift fake.[61] Phinks notes the door at the end as Tajao turns a wheel to open it before telling them that things would get rough from then on. Phinks remarks in surprise at what is behind the door.[60]

The door opens to a precarious staircase without railings without any floor near them in a big chamber, which Tajao explains is next to the hull of the Black Whale. Tajao explains that the smell was because the recycling and sewage treatment facilities are between Tiers 4 and 5. Nobunaga suggests that the Heil-Ly were posing as subcontractors hiring people to manage the waste in order to find prey. Feitan extends Phinks explanation that the Heil-Ly were pretending to be the employment agency to lure a whole mass of prey by suggesting that they could have simply set up an "interview" and lured individual applicants to a separate room, then handled the rest of the process like an assembly line.[61]

As Nobunaga heads back to follow up on his idea and not have to surrender his weapon, Phinks asks him if he has any tips for them regarding the Heil-Ly hideout. Nobunaga tells them about Yokotani's "invincible nonsense" and that the door between Rooms A and B in the floor plan he gave them was the warp point to Tier 3. Phinks is mildly annoyed at Nobunaga only mentioning the ability this late, and asks if they can attack at all. Feitan suggests that legitimate self-defense should avoid triggering the ability.[61]

Equipment

Feitan's concealed sword

Feitan's concealed sword

Concealed Sword: Feitan has a double-edged, thin sword resembling a jian or shikomizue, which he keeps concealed inside an umbrella. The hilt resembles that of an umbrella and is wrapped in dark purple bandages. The umbrella itself is maroon, with a black skull painted on it. Aside from concealing Feitan's sword, the umbrella can also be opened to briefly distract the opponent and create an opening,[47] or to stab them with the tip, which can also be fired like a bullet by pressing a button on the handle.[49]

Abilities & Powers

Due to Feitan being born in Meteor City, his existence is not recorded in any database, which makes obtaining information on him nearly impossible.[16] In terms of combat prowess, Feitan stands out even among the Spiders. His extreme speed, great strength, and skill in swordsmanship, combined with his powerful Nen abilities, make him a deadly opponent able to defeat Chimera Ant Squadron Leaders,[6] as well as multiple Shadow Beasts.[24] His strength of mind and ruthlessness allow him to act without hesitation. He has a penchant for attacking the enemy from their blind spots.[47][49] Since he rarely fights at full strength, he often underperforms at the beginning of a real fight.[48] Razor also deemed him an impressive individual.[43]

Preternatural Perception: As a skilled Nen user, Feitan possess what some may refer to as a sixth sense, gathering information from his surroundings through no discernible means. He sensed the disappearance of the Mafia member who led him through the warehouse.[51]

Enhanced Strength: Feitan ranked fifth in arm-wrestling among the Troupe. He was able to restrain Gon after the latter won an arm-wrestling bout against Nobunaga.[13]

Feitan's speed

Feitan beheading Mafia members in an instant

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Feitan's speed is among the highest in the Troupe.[49] He was able to move behind and restrain Gon in the blink of an eye.[13] After he unleashed his deafening howl and the other members asked why he didn’t warn them, Uvogin replied that they were fast enough to cover their ears before the sound reached them.[23] Feitan was also able to jump out of a car before Owl’s Fun Fun Cloth enveloped it.[24] He beheaded multiple Mafia members in an instant.[27] According to Kurapika, an attack that lasted 0.5 seconds would be more than enough time for the Spiders to avoid it.[62] During his fight with Zazan, he moved so fast that Kalluto had trouble following him, creating multiple afterimages of himself while dodging all of Zazan's high-speed attacks,[49] despite calling himself "out of shape"[48] and the other Spiders commenting that he wasn’t at the top of his game.[49]

Immense Agility: Feitan is able to attack from every direction while darting around at impressive speeds, recovering his position quickly right after an exchange of blows and assaulting the enemy relentlessly.[49]

Advanced Stamina: Feitan was able to dodge nearly every attack from Zazan and move at incredible speeds without breaking a sweat.[48]

Enhanced Endurance: Feitan continued fighting against a very powerful enemy such as Zazan even after having one arm and some ribs broken. Even after defeating Zazan, he fought alongside his comrades and killed all the Meteor City natives who had been turned into Ants.[6]

Keen Intellect: Feitan, along with Phinks and Nobunaga, successfully deduced the Hei-Ly's goals and modus operandi.[60]

Feitan vs Zazan

Feitan parrying Zazan’s attacks

Master Swordsman: Feitan carries a concealed sword which he wields proficiently.[47] He redirected most of Zazan's attacks with his sword.[47] He can exploit an opening in the enemy's movements to land a deadly attack, as well as perform multiple feints so quickly that Kalluto, a talented assassin, could barely count them.[49]

Master Torturer: Feitan is adept at torturing people in order to get information out of them,[8] as he did with Owl,[5] or to exact revenge, as he was eager to do with Gon.[13] He used a form of torture when he killed Zazan with his Pain Packer.

Nen

Feitan Using Ko Against Zazan - Episode 97

Feitan using Ko against Zazan

Feitan is a Transmuter*.[1][4] He is a powerful Nen user whose Rising Sun would have been lethal to multiple Troupe members if they had stayed to watch it being unleashed. The armor he materializes before using the ability suggests that he is skilled in Conjuration as well. Additionally, Feitan employs Emission to detach the aura from his body while preparing the attack.[6] Using three Nen categories simultaneously demonstrates versatility and competence. Aside from Hatsu, he has also mastered advanced Nen techniques like Shu and Ko, which he can combine,[49] as well as Ken.[6] These advanced applications imply that he can use Ten, Ren, Zetsu, and Gyo.[63]

Feitan's Nen Type: Transmutation
Type: Conjuration Pain Packer (許されざる者(ぺインパッカー) Unforgiven)
Pain Packer 2011
After taking damage and becoming enraged, Feitan conjures a suit of armor that protects him from the effects of the ensuing technique. His aura output also receives a boost. Phinks stated that the ability has a wide range and implied that it has multiple variations.[6]
Type: Emission, Transmutation Rising Sun (太陽に灼かれて(ライジングサン) Burnt by the Sun)
Feitan's rising sun
Feitan transmutes his aura into scorching heat, its power depending on the pain and injuries inflicted to him in battle. The ability is manifested by emitting a ball of aura into the air, which then transforms into a miniature sun that burns the victim to death. The more damage he has suffered, the hotter the fire, and the longer it will burn. Rising Sun is the only variation of Pain Packer that has been seen. While Feitan wears his armor, he is not harmed by the heat and is supplied with a source of oxygen.[6] The activation requirement may suggest that it is counteractive.[64]

Trivia

  • In the official databook, his name is also spelled as "Heytun".[1]
    • The alternative form of Feitan's name may be a reference to his Chinese-like theme and "origin" as it is very similar to the hanzi 黑暾 (hēi tūn, in Mandarin), where (hēi) [usually] means "black/dark" (referring to his general color scheme) and (tūn) [literary] means "new-risen sun/morning sun/sun above the horizon" (referring to his Rising Sun ability).
  • When Chrollo used Neon's ability to predict the Troupe members' fortunes, Feitan was one of three members (along with Phinks and Kortopi) whose fortune could not be told due to lack of information, with Feitan not knowing his date of birth.[2]
  • Feitan appears to be left-handed and seemingly ambidextrous as he is seen holding his sword in his left hand until it is broken and then switches to using his right hand during the fight with Zazan.
  • His name is Chinese and, as such, should be said as Portor Feitan; however, due to circumstances akin to Nobunaga Hazama and Shizuku Murasaki (having grown up in Meteor City alongside people who say their name in Western order), he uses Western order.

Anime and Manga Differences

Phantom Troupe In GI

Feitan and the others in Greed Island

  • In the 2011 anime adaptation, Feitan was present when Shalnark realized that Chrollo must have hired someone to play the game for him and then use his name as a message to them,[65] unlike the manga.[66]

Intertextuality and References

  • While torturing Owl, Feitan was seen reading a book by Trevor Brown, a controversial artist whose work involves paraphilia.[5]
  • The name Feitan and his Pain Packer ability are possibly both references to the Greek mythological figure, Phaethon, son of the solar deity Helios (the personification of the Sun). Phaethon means "Shining One" and was also the name of Phaethon, son of Eos (Goddess of the Dawn).
  • The sub-names of Feitan's abilities are derived from movies: Unforgiven or The Unforgiven and Burnt by the Sun.
  • Feitan bears a resemblance to Hiei from Togashi's other well-known series, YuYu Hakusho:
    • both are small in stature;
    • both are extremely fast;
    • both are proficient in swordplay;
    • both lack remorse in killing their enemies;
    • both utilize fire;
    • both wear dark clothing;
    • the way Feitan maneuvered behind Zazan and tried to stab her from above is reminiscent of how Hiei killed Makintaro.
