Rihan (リハン, Rihan)[1] is a high-ranking soldier in the Royal Army of the Kakin Empire, and one of the personal soldiers of Prince Benjamin.[2] He was among Prince Salé-salé's bodyguards under orders from Prince Benjamin,[3] but has since been reassigned to Prince Tubeppa.[4]

Appearance[]

Rihan wears his hair in a queue style and has slited eyes. He wears the standard Kakin military attire of a zipper jacket, pants, and dark combat boots.[2] He also uses an earpiece in his left ear.[1]

Personality[]

Rihan is a very perceptive individual. He can deduce the nature and ability of someone's Guardian Spirit Beast by simply being around it, even for only a short amount of time. He is quite confident in his ability to counteract against Prince Salé-salé's Guardian Beast.[1]

Background[]

As one of the First Prince's soldiers, Rihan graduated from Kakin's Royal Military Academy and became a part of his army.[5]

Benjamin orders his soldiers to act as royal guards

Benjamin orders his soldiers to act as Royal Guards

On the eve of the voyage, Rihan, together with 1st Prince Benjamin's thirteen other personal guards, attends a briefing by their captain, Balsamilco Might. Balsamilco gives the men an overview of the Black Whale 1's layout, instructions on how to act, and measures introduced to ensure the safety of Kakin's Princes throughout the duration of the voyage.[6]

After returning from the departure ceremony the next day, Benjamin gives orders to Rihan and his fellow guards, to guard each Prince as royal guards, alternating shifts with their current teams. Benjamin orders them to protect each Prince and report all observations back to him, reminding them that the unknown threat of the newly-discovered Nen beasts has made their mission an advanced, dangerous mission. He advises them to exercise extreme caution in ascertaining the abilities of the Hunters and Nen beasts, and authorizes them to use lethal force to eliminate the enemy in the name of self-defense. Rihan is assigned to guard 8th Prince Salé-salé[2]

On the second day of the voyage, Salé-salé teases two of his mistresses and hints at how he plans to change the world during the Sunday banquet on the eighth day. Rihan diligently stands guard as the Prince flirts behind him, and reviews his knowledge. He understands that he is the only one in the room that can see the Prince's Nen beast, and that the five present bodyguards and mistresses who are cautious of him are harmless. Because of that, Rihan concludes that by completely figuring out the Nen beast's ability or even pattern in its appearances, and avoiding it's attack, he can complete his job in five seconds. He turns his focus to the Nen beast, and notes that the beast is closely linked to Salé-salé's libido. Rihan notes that it is around all day, but recalls seeing three situations where it goes into hiding, and plans to aim for the moment it disappears, so he does not even have to take its ability into account. The Prince concludes his conversation by agreeing to put his performance over the P.A. system, and Rihan silently disagrees, apologizing in advance to the Prince for not being able to change the world.[3]

Chap 374 - Rihan beginning his analysis of Salé-salé's Nen beast

Rihan during his shift with Koroabde

On the third day of the voyage, Rihan finishes most of his analysis. He concludes that Salé-salé's Guardian Spirit Beast is a diffusive-induction type Manipulator, weakly compelling but able to control many people. Rihan guesses that one's goodwill toward Salé-salé increases with the amount of white smoke inhaled, and notes that a clone can appear over the heads of those who inhale enough of its exhaled smoke, which in turn produce more clones, a contagious carrier of goodwill towards Salé-salé. Rihan guesses that the beast multiplies itself to increase Salé-salé's allies because of Salé-salé's nature and desire for a harem. He decides that if he can figure out how long it takes for someone like fellow guard Koroabde, assigned by another Queen to Salé-salé, to inhale enough smoke for a clone to duplicate, he will be ready to unleash his Stranger: Predator, possibly being able to contribute to Benjamin's victory.[1]

Predator devours Salé-salé's Guardian Spirit Beast

Roughly 54 hours later, a small clone of Prince Salé-salé's Guardian Spirit Beast appears above Koroabde's head, Rihan determines that he has all the information he needs and activates his ability, which swallows the Guardian Spirit Beast as well as its clone. Having cleared his mission and being prevented from using any Nen for the following two days, Rihan contacts his superior to relay his success and request that his security shift be swapped with Yushohi's so the latter can assassinate the defenseless prince. He then talks directly to Yushohi, who claims that it is almost confirmed that Prince Fugetsu's Guardian Spirit Beast has teleportation capabilities.[7]

After Rihan is moved to Prince Tubeppa's room, Balsamilco tells him to lay low for a while before taking out Halkenburg's Guardian Spirit Beast. He warns Rihan that he might be misinterpreting the Ninth Prince's ability, but cannot say anything more due to the conditions of Predator. As a hint, he reminds him that Shikaku was a Manipulator.[4] Nonetheless, Rihan feels that his ability is being wasted since Tubeppa's Guardian Spirit Beast will not show itself, and since there is no guarantee that it is less dangerous than Halkenburg's. Noticing that Maor's Aura Nodes have been fully opened, he wishes to use Predator on Kurapika. Still, he understands that it would be ineffective due to the number of unknown abilities he has. He thinks that Balsamilco is being overly cautious due to Shikaku's suicide and begins to reflect on it, realizing that the extremely powerful aura he felt would make defending oneself impossible. He wonders if Shikaku offered his own life in exchange for Benjamin's, but rejects the possibility due to the prince's personality.[8]

On the tenth day of the voyage, Rihan stands guard near Maor and Longhi as they update Tubeppa about Kurapika's acceptance of her truce and his terms for doing so. Rihan sees that Tubeppa and her men are colluding with Woble, but corrects himself shortly after to say that they are colluding with Kurapika. Right after Tubeppa learns that Kurapika has accepted the peace treaty, Rihan notes a large amount of aura gathering behind Tubeppa right before her Guardian Spirit Beast appears facing him, croaking and producing fumes from its body. He notes the possible connection of Tubeppa's Nen beast appearing right after the signing of the peace treaty, which would imply that something about her beast is conditional.[9]

Abilities & Powers[]

Rihan has received military training.[2] He has proven himself to be astute and analytical.[1]

Nen[]

Rihan is a Nen user, although his superior Balsamilco believes him to be less knowledgeable than Hunters in that regard.[10] Nonetheless, he appears to be profoundly knowledgeable about Manipulation Nen as well as Nen beasts. He has at least the ability to use Hatsu.[1]

Once Rihan has selected a target and activated his Nen ability, a "Predator" begins to grow inside his body. The more accurate his understanding of the target's ability, the better the Predator will be able to counter it, figuratively developing into its natural predator.[1] When Rihan has gathered enough information, he focuses his aura between his hands and breathes out, conjuring the Predator. The one that countered Prince Salé-salé's Guardian Spirit Beast swallowed it and its small replica above Koroabde's head, then replaced it at the prince's side.[7] Despite being conjured,[1] this Predator was invisible to the non-users in the room.[7] Rihan remarked that his ability is an inaccurate "spray and pray" weapon that carries a lot of risk, but an auto-win if it connects.[8]
Since it draws strength from the accuracy of Rihan's analysis from a state of complete ignorance, Predator is powerless against simple Enhancement and Emission attacks,[1] also due to the target being the ability user themselves, who is likely to retaliate.[8] Furthermore, it is at a disadvantage against opponents with counteractive or multiple abilities. As an added condition, Rihan must gather the required information by himself,[7] since taking less risks and being told about the targeted ability by a third party would result in Predator being too weak to neutralize it.[8] After it successfully counters a Nen ability, Rihan is unable to use any Nen for 48 hours.[7]
