"Please. Let me... be the last..." — Pakunoda's silent prayer to the Spiders before dying, in "September 4th: Part 18" |
Pakunoda (パクノダ, Pakunoda) was member #9[note 1] of the Phantom Troupe.[3] Her physical strength ranked eleventh among the group.[4]
Appearance[]
Pakunoda was a tall, slender woman with long, pointed features. She had short, straight, blonde hair reaching down to her neck. Her most prominent feature was her aquiline nose. Most of the time, she had an apathetic look on her face. In her youth, she had shorter hair and her facial expression was kinder and happier. Her attire comprised a dark purple suit, which exposed much of her cleavage, and a pair of flat, pink shoes.
Her spider tattoo featured the number 9 on the spider's abdomen, but the tattoo location was never revealed.
Personality[]
Pakunoda exuded an air of self-confidence that could be intimidating to others. She was completely loyal to Chrollo. She even went against the Troupe, and Chrollo's own saying that the group's survival comes before the survival of the individual (including the leader), to rescue him. Pakunoda was very loyal to the Spider as well, sacrificing herself so that her comrades could know about Kurapika's abilities. Like the other members of the Troupe, she did not care at all about those who did not belong to the group. However, she was moved by Gon and Killua's noble attitude. She was impressed by their refusal to escape so that the deal between the Troupe and Kurapika could be made with no further bloodshed.
Like the other Spiders, Pakunoda was also cold-blooded, ruthless, and not above inhumane mass murder, most notably when she brutally massacred the Kurta Clan alongside her teammates. Her crueler side was also shown when she tortured and provoked Squala by talking about his personal life, likely knowing and expecting him to react in a way that would trigger his death at Nobunaga’s hands.[5] The gruesome murder of their dear friend Sarasa and their thirst for revenge against the perpetrators have desensitized her to such atrocities.[6] Pakunoda did not seem to put too much value on her own life, a trait shared by all of the Spiders.[3]
Pakunoda, growing up in Meteor City, was influenced by the conditions there, sharing remarkable bonds that have been described as "thinner than water, and yet thicker than blood".[7] This was also proven by the fact that the Phantom Troupe is a major asset in the defense of the city.[8]
In her younger days, she is shown to be kind and caring towards her friends.[9]
Background[]
Pakunoda originated from Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts. She is shown to have been a childhood friend of Chrollo and other members of the Phantom Troupe. Even in childhood, the others notice how well she understands people, seemingly reading their minds. Chrollo comments that she "reads them like a book."[9]
One day, about fifteen years prior to her series debut, Pakunoda meets with Sheila and Sarasa. She asks Sheila about the book she is reading and Sheila replies saying it is Dino Hunter. The three then meet with Chrollo to do the voiceovers to the Mighty Sweepin' Power Cleaners videotape he found, with Pakunoda voicing the Pink Cleaner.[9]
After the screening of the episode, seven more children join and form a theater group for voice-acting dubs of the remaining episodes.[10] One day, Sarasa, who voiced the Orange Cleaner, didn’t show up for the next screening and was later found dead in a bag suspended from a tree. After the funeral, Pakunoda and six other of her co-actors joined Uvogin in pledging their lifelong loyalty to Chrollo.[6] Three years later, Pakunoda was present during the foundation of the Phantom Troupe, along with Franklin, Machi, Feitan, Nobunaga, Uvogin, Shalnark and Chrollo.[7][6]
As a founding member of the troupe, she took part in the massacre of the Kurta Clan.[3]
Plot[]
Yorknew City arc[]
On August 31st, the Phantom Troupe members meet at an undisclosed location in Yorknew City. Their leader, Chrollo, announces that they will steal all the items at the Underground Auction.[11] Pakunoda is among the members who stay behind at the hideout while the others head to the auction.[12] Hours after the other group leaves, Uvogin contacts Chrollo and tells him about the current situation that most likely involves the Shadow Beasts.[13] After Uvogin's capture and subsequent hunt for the chain user, Pakunoda and the other Troupe members listen to Chrollo as he surmises that the chain user is either a Manipulator or Conjurer and that Uvogin would lose in a one-on-one fight against them. He then tells them that they will change their plans if Uvogin fails to return by dawn.[4]
As Gon and Killua tail Nobunaga and Machi in an attempt to locate their hideout, the two boys are confronted by Pakunoda and Phinks respectively.[14] Pakunoda is quickly joined by Machi, and the two ask Gon if he knows about a Nen user with chains, but Gon says that he doesn't know what they're talking about. Machi asks Pakunoda if he's lying, but she thinks that he isn't, adding that she will check anyway. Phinks then contacts Pakunoda and informs her that Killua has surrendered, much to Gon's surprise. The boys are then driven to the Troupe's hideout, and Pakunoda welcomes them inside.[15]
After the tense exchange between Gon and Nobunaga, Killua suddenly picks up on Pakunoda's use of the word memory and realizes that she has the ability to read them, having asked them about a Nen user with chains on the car rideover. He then worries about Pakunoda checking him again after he realizes that Kurapika is the chain user. Nobunaga takes the boys to a separate location in the hideout, and Shalnark hands out copies of detailed information on the Nostrade Family that he accessed from the Hunter Website. When Shalnark points out five people in particular and mentions that they are in charge of guarding the boss' daughter, both Pakunoda and Franklin appear surprised.[16]
On the night of September 3rd, the Phantom Troupe (with the exception of Hisoka and Nobunaga) partake in a bloody massacre ordered by Chrollo,[17] slaughtering police and 2,000 heavily armed Mafia members all around the Cemetery Building. Pakunoda pairs with Shalnark to kill the Mafia members.[18][19]
During the rescheduled Underground Auction, Pakunoda wheels out copies of the items created by Kortopi.[20][21] She is also present alongside Phinks to present the Scarlet Eyes to Kurapika after he wins the item. Afterward, the Troupe celebrates the success of the heist back at their hideout.[21]
On September 4th, Kurapika, Gon, Killua, and Leorio reunite with one another. Kurapika reveals the details of his ability, but Kurapika wonders why he would tell them that, pointing out that one of the Troupe members has the ability to read memories.[22]
Meanwhile, Chrollo announces that the Troupe will be leaving the city. Nobunaga refuses to follow the order and prefers to avenge Uvogin by killing the chain user.[7] Chrollo asks Nobunaga a series of questions and has him write them down on a piece of paper. The Troupe members then witness Chrollo showcase his newest stolen ability which allows him to write fortunes. After reading his fortune, Nobunaga claims that half of the Troupe will perish by next week. Shizuku confirms it by having her fortune read, revealing that she will be one of those who will die next week, along with Pakunoda and Shalnark.[3]
Chrollo recounts what his fortune said, while Phinks claims that none of them have Scarlet Eyes, guessing that it must be referring to the chain user. Both Pakunoda and Feitan remember that the Scarlet Eyes once belonged to the Kurta Clan. Elsewhere, Killua tries to convince Kurapika that they should go after the rest of the Troupe given how easily Pakunoda could discover Kurapika's secrets. Kurapika remains content with moving on and finding the rest of the Scarlet Eyes, but Hisoka suddenly texts him that the Troupe's corpses were fake.[3]
The other Troupe members have their fortunes told with the exception of Phinks and Feitan (and Kortopi[23]) due to lack of information. Pakunoda approaches Hisoka as he reads his fortune and tells him to let her read it. Hisoka is hesitant but allows her to read it. Pakunoda is left aghast at its contents[2] and has Franklin read it to confirm that Hisoka is a traitor. Learning this, Nobunaga tries to retaliate against Hisoka, but is stopped by Chrollo. The leader then interrogates Hisoka and concludes that he is innocent. An explanation of Hisoka's fortune reveals that Hisoka used Texture Surprise to alter it. It's also stated that while he knows that Pakunoda is a Specialist, he's ignorant of the fact that she has the ability to implant memories through conjured bullets (with Chrollo being the only other person who knows about it). Chrollo eventually decides that they will stay in the city.[24] Meanwhile, with new insight about the fake corpses, Kurapika plans to capture Pakunoda and take her away by car, adding that he has to get rid of her as swiftly as possible.[25]
Even though Gon, Killua, and Leorio all ask Kurapika to use his Judgment Chain on them, Kurapika refuses to do so. Gon worries about Pakunoda catching him again, but Kurapika points out that he would be killing himself prematurely if a rule were created about not letting Pakunoda touch him at all. He explains that she may not read her target's memories right when she touches them and that they could deal with her before she is able to tell the others.[23]
After the other Troupe members read through their fortunes, Chrollo divides them into teams and tells them to avoid being alone for the next week. Pakunoda is grouped with Machi and Shizuku.[23] Shalnark then gives updated copies of the information on the Nostrade Family. Shizuku asks Pakunoda why the Nostrade's daughter is in Yorknew, and she guesses that she came for the auction. Chrollo suddenly realizes that the chain user, the Nostrade's daughter, and the Scarlet Eyes are all connected. Chrollo then has Kortopi track the location of the fake Scarlet Eyes, and they eventually discover that the eyes are at the Hotel Beitacle. Chrollo tells Pakunoda's group that they are coming with him and Nobunaga, also telling Kortopi to switch teams so that he can give them updates on the eyes' location.[26]
As the Troupe make their way to the hotel, they are tailed by Killua and Melody.[27] Outside Lipa Station, Kortopi claims that the Scarlet Eyes are on the move. As the group quickens their pace, Chrollo senses that they're being tailed and tells Pakunoda, Nobunaga, and Kortopi to continue the pursuit while he, Machi, and Shizuku stay behind to confront the people tailing them. Pakunoda's group find the fake Scarlet Eyes with Squala,[28] who is interrogated by Pakunoda and then killed by Nobunaga after he's provoked by Pakunoda's mention of Eliza. Pakunoda then implants all of Squala's interrogated memories into Nobunaga and Kortopi with her Memory Bomb ability. She contacts Chrollo and tells him that they now know what the chain user looks like. Chrollo tells her they will wait for them in the hotel lobby.[5]
Just before 7:00 p.m., Pakunoda, Nobunaga, and Kortopi arrive at the Hotel Beitacle to regroup with Chrollo, Machi, and Shizuku, who have captured Gon and Killua. Sensing that the boys are hiding something, Chrollo asks Pakunoda to read their memories and find out what they're hiding. The boys stall for time until a blackout occurs and retaliate against Pakunoda, with Killua breaking her left arm and Gon kicking her in the face. The boys are restrained by Machi and Nobunaga, but Shizuku suddenly realizes that Chrollo is missing.[29]
Chrollo's disappearance stunned the Troupe members, and Machi asked Pakunoda if she was alright. Besides her two injuries, she assures Machi that she is, but before she can reveal the boys' memories, Nobunaga stops her and gives her a message that was left behind. After seeing that the message warns her not to speak of the boys' memories or Chrollo will die, Pakunoda uses her ability on the piece of paper and sees Kurapika holding a chained Chrollo as his hostage, realizing that he was pretending to be the receptionist (the only person they weren't watching). She then begins to analyze the entire situation in extreme detail, but Nobunaga snaps her out of it and tells her not to say a word.[30]
In a flashback, Pakunoda remembers the formation of the Troupe in Meteor City, where Chrollo stressed the importance of the Spider as a whole, telling them never to forget that someone else will take over if he dies. Back in the present, she continues to analyze the situation and asks herself whether she should speak or keep silent, also considering the details of her fortune. Machi snaps her out of it, telling not to think about it and to keep quiet. As the lights come back on and Nobunaga calls Phinks to tell him about the situation, Pakunoda tells herself that she will rescue Chrollo even if she has to betray what she believes in.[30]
Soon afterward, Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark arrive at the hotel. The situation confuses Phinks and Feitan, and Shalnark stresses that they need a plan. Kurapika uses Chrollo's cell phone to contact the Troupe, and after Phinks tries to lie to gain the upper hand, Pakunoda takes the phone. Kurapika gives her all the details and specifies that she must come alone. After he calls back and tells her to come to Lingon Airport, Pakunoda immediately leaves the hotel. As the Troupe members argue among themselves, Kurapika calls Phinks and tells the other members to return to their hideout in half an hour and not to follow Pakunoda.[31]
Meanwhile, a chained Chrollo is seen sitting next to Kurapika in a car heading to the airport. He realizes that Kurapika will prioritize his friends over his mission and hopes that Pakunoda will realize this as well and bring the rest of the Troupe with her.[32]
When Pakunoda arrives at the airport, Kurapika has her board one of the nearby airships. Once the airship takes flight, Kurapika and Melody appear with Chrollo. After Melody confirms that Pakunoda isn't lying about her identity, Kurapika lists two conditions for each of them and agrees to release Chrollo if she adheres to them. Pakunoda agrees to the conditions for Chrollo, and Kurapika then uses his Judgment Chain on Chrollo's heart. He then orders Pakunoda to release Gon and Killua without any tricks by midnight and to not reveal anything about him. Pakunoda agrees to the conditions, and Kurapika uses his Judgment Chain on Pakunoda's heart as well. Internally, Melody hopes that Kurapika will see that Pakunoda also just wants to get her friend back. After Kurapika gives her more details, Pakunoda quickly asks to be taken back to the airport. Kurapika wonders why she has no questions or objections, and Pakunoda says that she trusts his intentions and doesn't want to waste any time. Once she returns to the hideout, Phinks orders her to say where the chain user is so that they can kill the two boys and then the chain user, but Machi intervenes to defend Pakunoda.[33]
Phinks refuses to let her leave if she doesn't tell him, and Pakunoda refuses to back down, saying that she is taking the two boys with her to the hostage exchange. Feitan sides with Phinks, and Kortopi joins Machi to support Pakunoda. As they all activate their Ren, Gon intervenes and defends Pakunoda's actions, aggravating Phinks when he tells him that she just wants to save their leader. Franklin eventually voices his considered opinion and convinces Phinks to allow Pakunoda and the boys to leave. Arriving at the airport, Pakunoda is mortified by the fact that Hisoka has appeared, which could compromise the exchange. Hisoka manages to convince Kurapika to allow him to ride on the airship with Pakunoda and the boys. The two groups travel to a large rock formation on different airships, and the exchange is successful.[34]
During Hisoka's confrontation with Chrollo, Pakunoda patiently awaits in the airship for the outcome, surprised to learn that Hisoka didn't fight Chrollo. She wonders how he was able to leave the hideout unnoticed, and Hisoka confesses that he has a friend who is good at disguises. He assures Pakunoda that Chrollo is no longer in danger from him since he isn't interested in broken toys, leaving her stunned. At the airport, Pakunoda contacts Phinks with the news of Chrollo's release and promises to explain things when she returns. Before he takes his leave, Hisoka tells Pakunoda what his actual fortune said and that their actions have changed fate. Walking back to the hideout, Pakunoda encounters a small kitten in an alley that meows at her, and with a warm smile, she meows back.[35]
At the hideout, Phinks demands answers from Pakunoda and wonders to himself why she's holding her gun. Pakunoda tells them that Chrollo can't come there, and Phinks angrily asks if she's joking, ordering her to explain and threatening her with violence if they don't like her answer. Pakunoda readies her ability and tells herself that she can fire six shots simultaneously, which is the same number of remaining founding members. She then asks Feitan, Phinks, Machi, Nobunaga, Shalnark, and Franklin if they will trust her and accept it. As Pakunoda prepares to shoot out her memories, Phinks thinks that the chain user is manipulating her, but Nobunaga assures him that it's really Pakunoda. Once Pakunoda fires the six shots along with her memories into their heads, Kurapika's Judgment Chain activates around her heart. She prays that she will be the last as she falls dead to the ground. With the members left stunned, all of Pakunoda's memories suddenly flood into their minds. Shizuku checks on Pakunoda and confirms that she's dead, asking the others how it happened. Phinks says that he will explain everything and begins to tell the others why Pakunoda made her decision.[35]
Greed Island arc[]
After Phinks and Feitan confront Gon and Killua at the Southernpiece Auction House, Gon asks about Pakunoda. Phinks tells him that she died and sees a pained look on his face, prompting memories Pakunoda sent him of her interactions with them to play. Phinks sees memories of when Pakunoda asked the two boys why they weren't trying to escape from her since she was injured. She told them that if they escaped, the chain user could just kill Chrollo. She asked the two if they were his friends, and Gon sternly replied that it's because they're his friends that they don't want him to be a murderer. After Killua replied that the hostage exchange is the best way to do things, Pakunoda stood in silence as the two boys looked back at her. Back in the present, Phinks tells the boys that Pakunoda was thankful to them, quickly turning around as he and Feitan leave.[36]
Sometime after the Southernpiece Auction, Machi and a few other Troupe members are seen sitting near Pakunoda's grave inside the hideout.[37]
Equipment[]
Six Gun: Pakunoda channeled her Memory Bomb ability through a six-shot revolver. It was shown to have a very high rate of fire, able to empty its entire cylinder instantaneously.[35]
Abilities & Powers[]
Due to Pakunoda being born in Meteor City, her existence is not recorded in any database, which makes obtaining information on her nearly impossible.[7] Pakunoda was mainly employed by the Troupe to gather data through her power, but she was a decently skilled fighter as well, being capable enough to defend herself in combat, easily slaughtering multiple armed Mafia members,[18] as well as being confident in her own abilities when confronted by Phinks and Feitan.[34]
Preternatural Perception: According to Kurapika, Pakunoda (and the other Spiders) could sense Kurapika's hostile intent before attacking them, even though they were meters away.[27]
Enhanced Strength: Pakunoda ranked eleventh in arm-wrestling among the group,[4] being physically stronger than Shizuku, who is able to beat holes in Chimera Ants that use Nen.[38] She was stronger than an average Nen user and could break bones rather easily, as she did with Squala's right arm when he refused to answer her questions.[5] She could easily lift Gon and Killua off the ground with one hand each and hold them up with no effort.[29]
Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Pakunoda was fast enough to keep up with the other Spiders while pursuing Squala. She is able to run on walls, and she managed to intercept a moving car, although in rush hour.[28] She was also fast enough to move out of the way when Nobunaga killed Squala.[5] According to Kurapika, an attack that lasted 0.5 seconds would be more than enough time for the Spiders to avoid it.[27] Pakunoda also stated that if she wasn't injured, she would be able to capture Gon and Killua if the two tried to escape.[36]
Enhanced Agility: Pakunoda could run on the side of buildings and jump horizontally from one to another.[28]
Enhanced Endurance: Pakunoda was very resilient to pain, mostly unfazed after Killua broke her arm and Gon broke one of her teeth.[29][30]
Keen Intellect: Pakunoda was quite smart, within a few seconds after reading Gon and Killua's memories she correctly deduced Kurapika's intention and plans based on her current information. However, her intellect was eclipsed by her loyalty to Chrollo, whose capture led her to be upset and thus confused about what decision to make, although ultimately prioritizing Chrollo's life.[30]
Proficient Marksman: Pakunoda fought using a single revolver that shoots conjured bullets,[24] as well as normal Nen-enhanced bullets, as she confidently points her gun at other Nen users in combat.[28] In the 2011 anime adaptation, she was briefly shown wielding two guns,[39] and later a machine gun.[40] It should be noted that she was able to hit six Troupe members squarely in the forehead with her Memory Bombs in the brief instant between the first pull of the trigger and the crushing of her heart.[35] The full extent of her skills, however, was never revealed.
Expert in Tailing: Pakunoda was very proficient in tailing a target without being discovered. Gon and Killua were unable to notice her at all, and although they sensed someone's presence, Machi and Nobunaga were unable to recognize that it was her.[14]
NVC Expert: Pakunoda was extremely knowledgeable in non-verbal communication, as she could often tell when someone was lying without the help of her ability.[15]
Nen[]
Pakunoda was a Specialist.[41][42] Her Nen ability allowed her to read other people's memories.[16] She often used it to discover an opponent's ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail. Shalnark stated that Pakunoda's abilities were rare. Aside from Hatsu and obviously Ten, she could use at least Zetsu,[14] Ren,[34] Shu,[35] and with the probable addition of Ken.[34] Her Zetsu in particular was very impressive, in with which she pursued Gon and Killua unnoticed and of which she was hailed as a skilled user.[14]
Pakunoda's Nen Type: Specialization | ||
---|---|---|
Type: Specialization | Psychometry*[note 2] | |
Pakunoda could "read" the memories of any person she was in physical contact by asking specific questions.[22] Trying to fool Pakunoda by creating irrelevant conscious thoughts or false information was impossible since Pakunoda could extract her target's purest memories.[29] The information she collected was highly useful in exposing weaknesses and secrets, especially in finding out an opponent's ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail. The ability could also be used to see an object's past while touching it.[2] Although the length of time she could see was never precisely specified, she could see at least the very recent past.[30] While training for this ability, Pakunoda added the limitation that she would never read the memories of the person she cherished the most.[41][note 3] | ||
Type: Specialization, Conjuration | Memory Bomb (記憶弾 Memorī Bomu, lit. "Recollection Bullet") | |
Pakunoda could implant memories (including her own) by shooting them into another person's head using a revolver and conjured bullets called Memory Bombs. This was not a combat ability and inflicted no damage. However, if she shot someone with their own memories (which she had previously read), the person would lose those memories.[2] |

Appearances in Other Media[]
Phantom Rouge[]
Note: Events occurring in the Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge movie do not constitute canon material.
Pakunoda briefly appeared as a Soul Doll made by Omokage accompanied by four of the Shadow Beasts Uvogin killed in the Gordeau Desert. They all planned to ambush and kill Gon, Killua, and Retz and to steal their eyes, but failed due to getting trapped in Machi's Nen threads and being sliced to pieces by Nobunaga's sword.[43]
Quotes[]
- (To Squala) "You shouldn't lie."[5]
- (To Squala) "Is her name Eliza? She's very pretty."[5]
- (To Gon and Killua) "I extract the memories that are beneath your consciousness. I don't read your surface thoughts. My questions stimulate your memories. They're brought to the surface the way a stone thrown into a pond stirs up sediment. They are the original, unprocessed memories... and I scoop them out. They're impossible to falsify."[29]
- (To herself about the other Spiders) "Should I tell them or keep silent?! Which is most important?! What would you do, Chrollo?!"[30]
- (To herself) "Chrollo, we still need you... even if that means betraying the Spiders!!"[30]
- (To Kurapika) "You wouldn't ask that if you intended to trick me. Please hurry, I don't want to waste time."[33]
- (To the Spiders) "Feitan. Phinks. Machi. Nobunaga. Shalnark. Franklin. Will you trust me and accept this? All my memories... my heart and soul... everything...!!"[35]
Trivia[]
- In the official databook, her name is also spelled as "Phalcnothdk".[1]
Anime and Manga Differences[]
- In the 1999 anime adaptation, Pakunoda's conversation with Gon and Killua was a little different, she first asked why they didn't run away, then asked if it was because they were afraid of not being skilled enough, as she is much faster than them.[44]
- In the 2011 anime adaptation, an animation error occurred when Pakunoda was yelling at Hisoka, moving both arms, even though her left arm was broken.[45]
- In the 2011 anime adaptation, Pakunoda was explicitly stated to be member #9 of the Phantom Troupe.[46] This is also the same in the 1999 anime adaptation.[47] In the manga, however, while it was said that her and Shalnark's numbers were #6 and #9, it was never specified who had which.[3]
- This coincides with the manga, since in the Chapter 405, it is heavily implied that Pakunoda was number #9.
Miscellaneous[]
- Pakunoda is played by Ikeda Yukiko in the stage play, Hunter × Hunter: Real Stage.
- In the third character popularity poll, Pakunoda placed 23rd with 83 votes.

Notes
- ↑ In the Episode 54 of the 2011 anime adaptation, Pakunoda was explicitly shown as being the #9, while in the manga it was never explicitly stated, only implied in the Chapter 405 by Bonolenov.
- ↑ In the Hunter × Hunter Hunter Association Official Issue: Hunter's Guide; Character & World Official Databook, Pakunoda's psychic reading/psychometry-like Nen ability is referred to as 記憶を読み取る能力 (Kioku o Yomitoru Nōryoku, literally "Ability to Read Memory") on page 223 and as 記憶を読みとるレア能力 (Kioku o Yomitoru Rea Nōryoku, literally "Rare Ability to Read Memory") on page 123—merely descriptive, "placeholder" names.
- ↑ This person is likely Chrollo, in reference and respect for his refusal to share the note he found together with Sarasa's dismembered corpse.
