"Call them demons, entities, energy from another world, it doesn't matter. They don't belong here."
"But the violence, the death they cause, they feed off it. Our pain and suffering gives them pleasure."
―Daimon Helstrom and Louise Hastings[src]

Demons are otherworldly beings whose interactions with humanity left them with a sinister and enduring reputation. Their impact in the collective psyche is such that evil acts or malevolent events are often ascribed to them, whether they are justified or not. Several prominent demons have come to be known by humanity since ancient times, most notably, Chthon, Spirit of Vengeance, Mephisto and Marduk Kurios.

Demons can manifest in many forms, ranging from intangible entities to terrifying corporeal appearances. Some demons possessed the ability to mark human hosts in order to prepare them for possession. This act allowed demons to grow stronger as they fed off their hosts' energy. However, in the wake of their wickedness, there is an anomaly among their kind, as rare demons known as Keepers turned against their brethren to prevent demonic chaos. Another kind of demon known as the Spirit of Vengeance is a powerful entity defined by an insatiable desire for retribution, bonding with humans by mere touch, transforming its hosts into the fearful Ghost Rider.

Through these myriad forms and powers, demons continue to leave an indelible mark on the world, straddling the line between myth and reality. Their interactions with humanity remain a source of dread and fascination, eternally shaping the narratives of fear and vengeance that surround them, even becoming prominent in popular culture, yet their true nature remains understood only by those who have encountered them, prompting the creation of organizations like Blood, which take drastic measures, such as keeping exorcised hosts in a perpetual coma.

History[]

The First Demon[]

"Eons ago, the first demon, Chthon, carved his dark magic into this tomb. These same spells were later transcribed into the Darkhold."
―Wong to Scarlet Witch[src]

In ancient times, Chthon, a being known as the first demon, constructed a temple on top of Mount Wundagore and carved the dark magic into its walls, which were then transcribed into the first Darkhold.[1]

Interactions with Humanity[]

Throughout the ages, demons have been associated to religious beliefs and teachings, often serving as symbols of temptation, punishment, or the embodiment of evil. They were portrayed as adversaries to the forces of good, cautionary figures in moral teachings, or agents of chaos meant to test the righteous men, or the ones responsible for bad things happening to men.[2][3][4][5][6] Due to their horrific looks, creatures that were terrifying to the human eye were usually confused to be demons.[7][8][9]

Furthermore, in modern times, demons' existence became ingrained in popular culture,[10][11][12][13] where they evolved into symbols of fear, evil, the unknown or temptation.[14][15][16][17]

War with Humans[]

Demons trapping humans

Demons have roamed Earth for centuries trapping humans in a vicious cycle. Both beings coexisted despite the fact that their presence enervated each other. When Kthara's children were attacked, she declared a war between demons and humans.[18] The Blood was formed in response to demons' existence, trapping demons in their host bodies in hotels so that they could not wreak havoc by placing them in an induced coma. This group included seven generations of Caretakers. At one point, a group of demons decided to betray their own kind and help the humans to fight demons. They developed the ability to contain demonic powers and became known as Keeper Demons, giving humans talismans made from their deceased's remains they could use as a temporary way to contain demons.[19]

Keeper's Casket

Basar's crypt

During the war, a group of humans brutally attacked Basar, Kthara's son, upsetting her deeply. Kthara went to report the murder to the elders of the village where she lived. The elders did not believe her. However, Basar resurrected several days later and slaughtered the entire village.[20] Basar was eventually contained by a Keeper, who continued to contain it even after its death. The demon's corpse, along with Basar, ended up in a crypt in Colma. This war eventually ended with the humans, whom Kthara and her children referred to as "oppressors," declaring that they should not be shown mercy. However, demons remained and continued possessing people.[18] A demon once possessed the brother of a man named Henry, resulting in his death. Distraught, Henry agreed to join the war against demons after years of refusing to.[21]

Demons were considered monsters. For centuries, Ulysses Bloodstone led his cabal of monster hunters as a part of a big crusade across the world. Bloodstone eventually fought and killed a demonic entity known as Krogg, keeping the demon's head as a trophy inside Bloodstone Manor.[22]

Marduk Kurios[]

Woman Alleges Horrific Attack

The Oregon Examiner reporting on Marduk's crimes

The demon Marduk Kurios arrived on Earth and became a mass murderer, killing many people for the enjoyment of their pain. He met a woman named Victoria, whom he charmed, and did not tell about his killing.[23] He killed many people, including Rebecca Torres and two other women in Dallas, Texas.[24] He also killed an architect and stole his cufflinks,[25] as well as two college students who were burned alive in Thomas Park.[26] Victoria married Helstrom, and eventually figured out that he was a killer. However, she could not leave the marriage since she had realized that he was torturing her on purpose.[23]

Marduk tortures and scars Daimon

Marduk and Victoria had children named Daimon and Ana,[18] and gave them a normal childhood.[27] However, that was until Marduk kidnapped Ana, in the process carving up Daimon with a special dagger that could hurt demons, which Daimon split in two. He also marked Victoria for possession. This resulted in Daimon getting a permanent scar on his chest. Marduk then took Ana as he went and killed several people,[18] including someone who was dumped in the Willamette River[28] and an incident involving Zoe Richards, who Marduk and Ana were unaware survived.[29] Marduk eventually decided to let Ana torture one of his victims, handing her the half of his dagger that he took from the kidnapping. However, Ana stabbed Marduk and ran away, eventually getting caught. Marduk buried her underground,[30] assuring her that she would survive because of her strength.[21]

Meanwhile, Victoria, who had been marked for possession by Marduk, became possessed by Kthara and slowly lost the fight against the demon. Frightened for his mother's well-being, Daimon called the Behavior Health Department, who sent Dr. Meyer to help Victoria. She got taken into protective care and was eventually sent to Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health. Victoria started reliving this memory on loop in her own mind, as part of her being possessed.[31] Daimon began to feel guilty about what had happened, driving him to the point of suicide. He jumped off of a bridge, but was stopped by Marduk, who communicated to him through his head that Daimon would always be his son, before letting him fall safely into the water below.[21]

Caretaker and Louise Hastings decide Ana Helstrom's fate

Marduk's body was later found and cremated,[32] but the demon survived and remained dormant.[21] The Blood had decided to kill Daimon and Ana, who were brought to Saint Teresa's for psychological evaluation. During this time, Ana had begun to develop demonic abilities, causing a nurse to faint. Caretaker convinced the Blood to merely separate the siblings rather than kill them, and he told Louise Hastings. Frightened of Ana's abilities, Hastings decided to take in Daimon, while Ana was put into the foster care system, where Caretaker would regularly check in on her.[30] However, Daimon also soon started showing demonic abilities when he was bullied at his school, causing the bullies and several objects to fly across the room and setting his backpack on fire. Daimon began to see himself as a monster, but Hastings assured him that he was not.[27]

Daimon and Ana separated themselves from demonkind, leading them to be labeled traitors, especially Helstrom's son, who began exorcising demons with Hastings. Although, as Helstrom and Chris Yen began performing murderous acts of vigilante justice together, demons came to appreciate her.[32]

Spirit of Vengeance and the Ghost Rider[]

"You can't hold on to Mack's body forever. He's a good man. He doesn't have vengeance in him."

A Good Samaritan passes Spirit to Robbie Reyes

An extremely powerful inter-dimensional demon[33] known as the Spirit of Vengeance escaped from the Dark Dimension and arrived to Earth.[34] Being a demon who bear desperation and a desire for vengeance he bonded with several humans turning them into the Ghost Riders[35] such as Johnny Blaze and Robbie Reyes.[36]

Spirit of Vengeance - AoS407

When Robbie Reyes was being dragged into Hell, the Spirit left Reyes' body and bonded with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Alphonso Mackenzie. However, the Spirit was followed by Reyes, who claimed they still had unfinished business. Reyes decided to make a new deal with the Spirit: if the Spirit helped him to take down Morrow, he would help him to settle down his own old scores. The Spirit, thus, bonded again with Reyes and they both defeated Eli Morrow while being taken to the Dark Dimension in the process.[34][37] Eventually, the Spirit and Reyes, now bonded as the Ghost Rider felt the Dark Matter that Aida used to make her own body and helped S.H.I.E.L.D. in their conflict against her. In order to kill Aida, the Spirit momentarily bonded with Phil Coulson. However, Coulson's possession caused the cancellation of the GH.325's effects which had kept Coulson alive since his resurrection, dooming him.[38] The Spirit and Reyes took the Darkhold to the Dark Dimension.[39]

Helstrom Family Reunion[]

Spivey Caught by Casket

Basar breaks free by possessing Spivey

While Kthara was kept in Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, she enlisted Keith Spivey, Hock, and Liddle to go to Colma and free Basar from his imprisonment. Once Spivey freed Basar, the demon possessed Spivey and killed Hock and Liddle, incinerating them. Meanwhile, Daimon Helstrom used his demonic abilities to scare Archer Cavallo into pretending to be possessed, and Ana Helstrom used hers to kill Edward Tate. Daimon attempted to investigate what Kthara had Spivey do, but Kthara only taunted him and answered his questions cryptically. Meanwhile, Ana and Caretaker investigated the break in at the cemetery where Basar was kept, and they came across the skull of the Keeper Demon that was containing Basar. Helstrom them took the skull back to her auction house.

KeeperSkullEye

Basar then went to a gas station[18] and marked Alex Tilden for possession, allowing him to get possessed by the demon Magoth. Meanwhile, Ana Helstrom returned to Portland and Daimon asked for help trying to get their mother, Victoria Helstrom, free from Kthara. Meanwhile, Magoth came across Kevin, who offered to take the man to the hospital. Magoth caused the car to crash, killing the driver and Tilden's body, but Magoth kept the body alive. Meanwhile, Chris Yen came across the Keeper's skull, which called for him to touch it, but he got interrupted by Caretaker's arrival.

Alex Tilden Exorcism

Daimon Helstrom managing to exorcise Tilden

Father Sean Okamoto attempted to give Tilden his last rites, but Magoth simply attacked the priest. Daimon Helstrom and Gabriella Rosetti arrived, and Okamoto told them what happened. While Yen allowed the Keeper's skull to bite into his arm, Helstrom and Rosetti confronted Magoth and Ana Helstrom attempted to get through to Victoria Helstrom. Magoth taunted Daimon, calling him a traitor, when Tilden's family arrived and Rosetti begged the demon to allow Tilden to say goodbye, but Magoth refused and revealed to Daimon that Ana used her abilities to murder people often. While Rosetti attempted to use a prayer to exorcise Magoth, Yen felt the influence of the Keeper Demon as he was confronted by Tate's brother, Cameron Tate, and killed him.

Kthara taunted Ana Helstrom, who attempted to use her demonic abilities on the demon, to no avail. Kthara then began attacking Helstrom, saying that she was her father's favorite. Meanwhile, Rosetti's prayer managed to help Tilden regain control of his body long enough to ask Rosetti to send a message to his family, when Magoth came back and warned Daimon Helstrom that the demon Kthara unleashed would unleash chaos before getting exorcised by Helstrom. Meanwhile, Basar continued his killing spree by killing a man in a public restroom. Meanwhile, Kthara implied to Ana Helstrom that her father was the demon who she set free.[32]

Basar'sBloodyHand

Basar after the massacre at the Phi Gamma Epsilon House

Basar then attacked a fraternity house and killed everyone inside, marking Bryce for possession. Magoth possessed Bryce and told Basar that Daimon Helstrom had been arned about his coming, and was sent to make a deal with Aubree and Zoe Richards, offering them revenge against Ana Helstrom for her involvement in Zoe's kidnapping and disfigurement. While Kthara had Tooms unsuccessfully try to kill Caretaker, the Helstroms and Rosetti fell for Aubree and Zoe's trick as Aubree lured Ana into a trap. Ana tried to fight off Basar, becoming convinced that he was her father, but got thrown off a ledge in hit the ground by the time Daimon and Rosetti found her, and they managed to escape.[29]

RaumContainment

Rosetti observing the demon Raum being induced into a coma

Daimon and Ana Helstrom attempted to return to San Francisco to retrieve the Keeper's Skull to contain the demon they believed to be their father, but instead found Cameron Tate's corpse and the skull missing, as Chris Yen brought it to Portland at the skull's request. Meanwhile, Rosetti went to church to pray, but found that the priest in the confessional booth was possessed by the demon Raum, who attacked her. Caretaker arrived and stopped Raum, bringing him to the Blood's hotel in Portland, where Finn Miller registered the demon and sedated its host. Caretaker explained the process of sedating hosts to contain demons to Rosetti, who found the process to be objectionable.

Louise Hastings noticed that Kthara's health was deteriorating, so she brought her outside in a wheelchair, where the demon opened up to Hastings about her past and the attacks on her children. Kthara then told Hastings her name, while Yen was nearly influenced by the skull to eat the corpses of spiders on the ground, but stopped himself. Kthara then began refusing to go back to her room, having sensed something different about the room as Yen and the Keeper's skull began sitting directly under it.

When the Helstroms returned to Portland after cleaning up Tate's body, Magoth went to Daimon's house and offered him a deal, Ana in exchange for Victoria's freedom. Daimon refused the deal, leading to a fight between him and Magoth. Ana arrived and joined the fight, as the two worked together to exorcise Magoth, and Bryce thanked them before passing out.[19]

Keeper105

Keeper torturing Kthara

The skull then attacked Kthara, frightening her and causing the demon to alter the memory that Victoria was stuck in, attempting to manipulate Victoria into helping her by saying that Victoria's ex-husband was the one attacking. While Rosetti helped counsel Bryce through the trauma of being possessed, Hastings, Caretaker, and the Helstroms realized that Yen brought the skull underground, so they went looking for him. They tracked Yen down, but could not agree long enough to retrieve the skull. Daimon attempted to destroy the skull, but Victoria realized that Kthara was tricking her and allowed the Keeper to catch her. Victoria then resumed control of her body and shouted for Daimon to stop. Victoria began carrying the skull around to keep Kthara at bay. Meanwhile, Basar went to the Blood's hotel and massacred all of the Blood members, freeing the demons.[31]

BasarsTrueForm

Basar trying to consume Daimon Helstrom

Basar went to his host's house and retrieved his work uniform,[23] marking his host's wife, Jolene Spivey, for possession and kidnapping the woman.[30] While Daimon Helstrom and Rosetti worked on cleaning the massacre at the Blood Hotel, Basar attacked Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, hoping to free Kthara. He and the other demons from the Blood Hotel marked several people for possession, including Dr. Edgar Lawrence, who became possessed by Magoth. Helstrom and Rosetti were attacked by Naren and a demon who was possessing Brian, but managed to fight them off and return to the hospital, where Yen recovered the Keeper's skull. The Helstroms confronted Basar and used the skull to destroy his host body, resulting in the skull's destruction. Kthara then resumed control of Victoria Helstrom's body and left with the upper half of Basar's in a Portland Meat Market truck, which Raum drove away. Ana Helstrom then admitted to Daimon Helstrom that they had not killed their father, but rather a separate demon,[23] frustrating Daimon. This led to an argument in which Ana decided to return to San Francisco.

GoreyBasar

Basar under Kthara's care

Raum killed a drug dealer and brought a set of drugs to treat Kthara while the demons hid out on the Garibaldi II, and suggested they leave Basar behind. However, Kthara refused. Raum said that he would not be able to mark any people, but Basar communicated that someone else already had been marked. Daimon Helstrom and Rosetti then interrogated the demon Loman, who refers to Helstrom as a traitor and says that the demons wanted freedom, which only Kthara could grant. The Blood attacked Daimon, causing him to get angry and burn many people alive, frightening Rosetti.[30] Helstrom and Rosetti then set out to find the second half of Helstrom's father's dagger to prevent the Blood from getting it. Meanwhile, Kthara ripped Basar's heart out of his host's body.

Finn Miller then got possessed by Magoth, who killed several Blood members, including Ahmad. While Daimon was attacked by the Blood, who were after the dagger, Ana and Hastings attempted to attack Kthara. While Daimon had the Blood members dangling prepared to be hanged, Kthara allowed Victoria to come out. Unable to kill her, Ana instead suffocated her with a pillow so that Kthara would leave and Victoria could be resuscitated. Daimon lured out Esther Smith and released the Blood members, attempting to prove that he was human, unlike his father. That night, Magoth placed Basar's heart at the entrance to Daimon's house while Rosetti got possessed by Kthara. Kthara then took the heart and placed it inside Daimon Helstrom's body, causing Helstorm to get possessed by Basar. The two demons then had sex and impregnated Rosetti.[27]

Basar is held in custody

Rosetti was kidnapped[20] and held in a room at an abandoned carnival.[21] Basar went to Saint Teresa's to kill Victoria Helstrom, but was stopped by Ana Helstrom, while the two engaged in a fight. Hastings and Caretaker knocked the demon out and placed him in Kthara's former room in the hospital. Meanwhile, Yen started to feel the effects of getting bitten by the skull,[20] as he slowly transformed into a Keeper Demon.[21] Ana Helstrom, Hastings, and Caretaker attempted to question Basar, who insisted that Rosetti was dead, while Rosetti's pregnancy was in fact being sped up by the demons, and Kthara tried to convince Rosetti that pregnancy was a wonderful thing by telling the novitiate about the love she had for own sons. Meanwhile, Victoria Helstrom confronted Basar and angered him, causing him to make cracks in the wall of his room.

Raum revealed Kthara's plan to Rosetti, saying that Kthara intended to be born in Rosetti's child. However, Rosetti managed to escape and told Hastings, Ana, Victoria, and Caretaker, leading Ana to resolve to use her father's dagger to cut Basar out of Daimon. While Ana went to the hospital, Raum and Magoth stood outside and prepared to bring Rosetti back to them. Ana confronted Basar, who taunted her with Daimon's memories about trying to kill himself after their father kidnapped her. The two fought, until Ana said that her death would likely lead to the death of Rosetti's baby. Daimon temporarily resumed control of his body and asked for Rosetti. Ana attempted to cut Basar out of Daimon, but could not do it without both pieces of the dagger. Ana left to get the second half of the dagger from Caretaker, asking Daimon to keep Basar at bay until her return. While Magoth and Raum began attacking Rosetti, however, Daimon and Basar's fight led his body getting thrown around the room, killing Daimon.[20]

Hastings and Victoria managed to stop Raum, and Victoria escaped with Rosetti while Caretaker arrived at the house. Caretaker stabbed Magoth, who attempted to return the favor with a fire poker, but Hastings jumped in the way and got impaled instead. Meanwhile, Basar kept Daimon alive and attacked a doctor, returning to the carnival and got upset at Raum and Magoth for losing Rosetti.

Yen then went to Portland and told Ana and Caretaker about his developments, and Caretaker told Yen that he was becoming a Keeper Demon.

Daimon Helstrom's Trident

Meanwhile, Basar made a deal with Blood to get Rosetti, and they went to the church and took her. Yen showed Ana and Victoria how to recombine the two pieces of the dagger, and they managed to do it while Rosetti refused to give birth to Kthara. While Rosetti went into labor, Ana and Yen arrived at the carnival and began looking for Basar and Rosetti. Basar lured Ana into a haunted house while Magoth attempted to coach Rosetti through the birth. Ana and Basar fought, when Yen arrived and began keeping Basar at bay, giving Ana the chance to cut it out of Daimon and kill it. Meanwhile, Rosetti gave birth to the baby. While Magoth and Raum prepared to kill Rosetti, Daimon appeared with the knife and killed both demons, freeing their hosts. Yen took the baby and began watching over her.

Rosetti told Daimon that she hated all demons, including him and his sister, upsetting him. The Helstroms, Caretaker, and Hastings all agreed to have dinner together and care for the baby, but Yen instead decided to take her and watch after her himself, as she grew up rapidly over the course of a month.[21]

After Kthara spent a month with Chris Yen, Marduk Kurios approached the pair and expressed satisfaction that Yen was the new Keeper Demon. Yen attempted to tell Kthara to run, but Helstrom cut him off and reminded Kthara of her real name, Lily, and reminded her that he was Lily's father. Yen refused to allow Helstrom to take Kthara, but Helstrom began killing people who were nearby. Yen hesitantly gave Kthara to Helstrom, who walked away with his daughter and continued killing people, intending to reunite her with Daimon and Ana Helstrom.[21]

Souls of the Damned torment Strange

"Stephen Strange, possessing a dead body is forbidden! Cease your dreamwalk or face the eternal consequences."
―Souls of the Damned to Doctor Strange[src]

In late 2024, Doctor Strange, who was in an alternate universe, dreamwalked into Defender Strange’s corpse in New York City and used his Sling Ring to open a portal to Mount Wundagore. Immediately upon arriving, he was met by demons, known as the Souls of the Damned, which attacked him and told him that he had possessed a corpse, which was forbidden. The demons came through the Darkhold from Dimension 616 to that universe. Christine Palmer fought them off using the Brazier of Bom'Galiath.

Strange eventually gained control and used his magic to constrain them and use them to fly over to the Darkhold Castle. He then used them to blast the Elder Beasts off the ledge. Wanda Maximoff then blasted Strange with her chaos magic, which the demons consumed and were then thrown by Strange at her. The demons surrounded her, causing her to be frightened. As she tried to escape by flying, the demons remained on her.

Strange and Wong then used their magic to contain Maximoff in a prism spell. As Maximoff tried to break free, the demons grabbed her. However, she was stronger and destroyed the demons with her magic.[1]

Visited by Madisynn King[]

"I made a pact with a demon that I cannot discuss. Otherwise he said he would 'reap my soul and the souls of all I love.'"
―Madisynn King[src]

During a magic show, Donny Blaze opened a portal behind Madisynn King. Drunk, King stepped into the portal and encountered demons and Goblins. King made a deal with a demon named Jake, who presented himself as a demonic goat, to get her back to Earth. However, Jake threatened to kill King and everyone she loved if she revealed the details of the deal to anyone. Jake then returned King to Earth, dropping her into Kamar-Taj.[40]

Skirmish at the Mystic Castle[]

In another show, Donny Blaze summoned a demon inside of an egg, and it hatched in Amberleigh's hand. Blaze sent the demon to another dimension, but could not close the Inter-Dimensional Portal. This resulted in a group of demons coming through into the Mystic Castle, causing a panic. Blaze went to Wong for help, who had Jennifer Walters go fight as well. Wong closed the portal, turning it into an Eldritch Whip and using it, along with Walters help, to send the demons through a new portal. Once all but one demon was gone, Walters used the remaining one to threaten Blaze and Cornelius P. Willows to agree to Blaze stopping his use of the mystic arts in his magic show.[40]

The Wu Family Curse[]

At some point, the Wu family was cursed by a malediction that was passed down to female members. The curse manifested as a demonic creature that was able to generate heat and fire, looking to burn its victims alive. The curse continued to ruin the lives of the female members of the Wu family being able to kill Lorna Wu before moving on to torment Alice Wu-Gulliver. In 2026, on the Witches' Road, a pocket dimension created by Billy Maximoff,[41] during the Protection Witch Trial the curse manifested itself and began terrorizing Wu-Gulliver and the other witches from her coven. Agatha Harkness realized that in order to defeat the curse, they needed to play the version of the Ballad of the Witches' Road composed by Lorna, which turned out to be a protection spell that Lourna had cast to keep Wu-Gulliver safe. With the song reacing its climax, the curse was obliterated from existence.[42]

Trying to prevent Christine Palmer's death, Doctor Strange traveled back in time to gather knowledge that would help him, since Palmer's death was an absolute point in time within his timeline. Strange lost himself to dark magic as he began to absorb mystical beings in an attempt to be powerful enough to break the fixed point in history. Strange absorbed several demonic entities.[43] While Strange was unable to save Palmer the first time, he tried a second time by using his Forge, a machine that needed to be powered with the energy of very powerful individuals, which Strange had captured from their respective universes. His plans were frustrated by the intervention of Captain Carter and Kahhori. During their fight, Strange used the power of the demons he had absorbed to gain the upper hand. The conflict came to an end with Strange's demise and the destruction of the Forge.[44]

Iso-8 Power Source[]

Demon

In an alternate universe, Thor fought against demons on Nidavellir whilst on a mission to rescue Fandral and prevent the Marauders from stealing Uru weapons.[45]

Characteristic Traits[]

Demons come in all manner of forms. Some demons have no physical form and require possession of tangible entities like humans to interact with the material universe.[32] Some who have physical forms look like the archetypal demons of myths: scaly wings, fangs and claws, predatory features, maybe even a tail.[40][42] Some may even resemble Earth animals, like goats[40] or birds or snakes.[43]

Some demons were former humans with particularly malevolent personalities. The oldest and most powerful of them have the ability to "mark" human hosts. This allows lesser demons to possess their victims. This mark appears as a gaping wound anywhere on the victim's body.[32][23]

Demons possess humans to grow stronger. They feed off their victim's energy until the body burns itself out; an analogy is that they steal the victim's soul for themselves. They also feed off the negative responses they elicit from others.[32]

Human bodies controlled by demons tend to exhibit supernatural strength and abilities. Demons can keep their hosts alive even through injuries that would kill normal humans, and will only discard the flesh unwillingly or after fulfilling some goal.[32][27] Being in human hosts, however, means demons are still vulnerable to things that can subdue humans like sedation drugs.[19]

Some demons, known as Keepers, are a rare breed that turned on their kind and specialize in preventing other demons from causing mayhem. Their remains or artifacts made from their remains can neutralize demons for limited periods of time.[19]

Demons who possess humans can be exorcised out of their hosts by specially-empowered beings. However, this only sends them back to where they came from and doesn't actually kill them, leaving the demon to learn and bide its time before it returns in another host. The Blood, an anti-demon organization, attempts to delay this by keeping hosts in comas for the rest of their lives.[19]

Other demons[33] as the Spirit of Vengeance are very powerful entities that manage to use their powers by bonding with other beings. The Spirit bonded with Humans transforming them into the Ghost Rider. Compared to the other demons, the Spirit explicitly bears desesperation and desire of vengeance. The Spirit can bond with other hosts by simply touching the person or transferring itself to another human, sometimes without the host's consent.[36][34]

The Spirit has proven to be the most powerful demon as it can imbue the person he possesses with immeasurable supernatural power such as increased physical abilities, healing, hellfire manipulation, object empowerment as well as a degree of fire manipulation.[46] The Spirit of Vengeance is also able to resurrect the one that is possessed.[36]
