The Search for the Shard was an attempt by Daimon Helstrom and Gabriella Rosetti, as well as the Blood, to unite the two pieces of Helstrom's father's dagger, which could be used to kill demons.
Background[]
The Blood determined that their practice of keeping demons in comas at hotels was inefficient, and realized that Caretaker had found a piece of Marduk Kurios's dagger when he rescued Ana Helstrom after Marduk had kidnapped her. They took Caretaker when his loyalty to the Blood was called into question following a massacre at one of their hotels, which Caretaker did not know about. They took Caretaker to his house and tested each knife in his collection against his scar, which revealed which dagger belonged to Caretaker.
Esther Smith, the leader of the Blood, called Daimon Helstrom on Caretaker's phone and offered him a chance to work together to track down and kill Kthara. Helstrom at first refused, but he later changed his mind and set up a meeting with the Blood, which Caretaker would moderate to broker a peace. Helstrom and Gabriella Rosetti went to the meeting, where Lee attempted to stab Helstrom with the dagger. Helstrom reacted negatively, burning two of the Blood members alive. Lee dropped the dagger and fled with Smith, while Helstorm and Rosetti rushed back to his house.[3]
Helstrom and Rosetti warned Ana Helstrom that she might get attacked and left the half of the dagger the Blood had at Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health. While Louise Hastings put it in her safe, Helstrom and Rosetti drove to their childhood home to recover the other piece of the dagger so that they could combine it and destroy Kthara, even though the demon was possessing Helstrom's mother and might kill her as well.[4]
Search[]
While the Blood kept Finn Miller, who had been marked by Basar, in a cage as bait for Kthara, other members found Daimon Helstrom and Gabriella Rosetti headed toward the other half of Helstrom's father's dagger. Ahmad showed Esther Smith the information, so she prepared to go after Helstrom and the dagger.
Helstrom and Rosetti arrived at his childhood hoome, which Rosetti mentioned was quiet. Helstrom explained that his father always picked houses away from prying eyes. Rosetti started to go inside, when Helstrom warned her that since Kthara had access to Victoria Helstrom's memories, several demons might be present. While they debated on a plan, Rosetti noticed a real estate agent putting out an open house sign. They let the agent walk them around and posed as a couple, and Helstrom asked whether the agent had heard anything unusual about the house, and the agent told them about how good of an area it was while Helstrom recognized two Blood members also pretending to be interested in the house. Helstrom asked to look around, and the realtor insisted on showing them the kitchen.
More Blood members entered the house and Helstrom realized that they also wanted the dagger but did not know where Helstrom hid it. The Blood members asked the real estate agent if Helstrom and Rosetti were interested, and she said they were. Rosetti suggested they leave to draw the Blood away from the innocent people, and Helstrom went up to the agent and loudly asked about a nearby barn and whether it was part of the property while the Blood listened. The agent innocently offered to get in touch with the people whose property it was a part of and Helstrom told Rosetti that he had a plan, saying they would wait for the Blood members to leave.
They went into the basement of the house while the Blood members left. Although Rosetti intended to wait out the Blood members and then leave, Helstrom insisted that they retrieve the knife. He led the Blood out to the barn, where he began digging up a box he had left there as a child. He found it and was attacked by several Blood members holding weapons. One member tased him as the Blood put a Keeper Talisman on his forehead, hoping to contain him. A member of the Blood went into the box that Helstrom had dug up, finding an action figure rather than the dagger. Helstrom burned the Keeper Talisman, revealing to the Blood that he was not really contained, and threw them all across the barn using his telekinetic ability. He stood up, threatening to make an example out of the members.
Rosetti found Helstrom in the barn and told him that the Blood's cars were still there, before seeing that Helstrom had used his abilities to set up a makeshift gallows, with the Blood members hanging from nooses and standing on piles of objects he had found in the barn. Helstrom suggested she wait outside while Rosetti remained scared. He explained that the Blood only understood extremes and removed a platform, letting the person continue to float while Rosetti begged him to stop, refusing to go outside. Helstrom removed the final platform, keeping the four people afloat and frightening Rosetti. He taunted her for the fear, and Helstrom loudly asked Esther Smith to show herself.
She entered the barn and scolded Rosetti for allowing Helstrom to torture her people, while Rosetti asked him to stop. Helstrom asked Smith to beg for their lives, and Smith explained that she did not care whether he killed her or her people, as it would only prove that demons were all the same. Helstrom dropped them slightly while Rosetti picked up a shovel and threatened to hit him. Helstrom told her that hitting him would break his concentration and cause the Blood members to fall, and Helstrom said that he was like his father, but also human. He said that, being human, he had the power of forgiveness, and freed the Blood members, forgiving Smith for her prejudice and treachery, declaring the Blood's war to be over. He told them to stay away from his family and to feel lucky that they did not encounter his sister. Helstrom and Rosetti left the barn together while Helstrom broke back into his childhood home and retrieved the dagger from under the fireplace.[4]
Aftermath[]
With both halves of the dagger, Ana Helstrom and Daimon Helstrom planned on using it against their father should he return.[4] However, Daimon got possessed by Basar,[5] so they were not able to reunite the dagger. Ana and Victoria Helstrom, following instructions by the Keeper Demon Chris Yen, reforged the dagger with Ana's fire powers. Ana then used it to kill Basar, freeing Daimon, who used the dagger to kill Magoth and Raum.[6]
