Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, also known as St. Teresa's, is a psychiatric asylum located in Portland, Oregon.
History[]
Helstrom Family[]
When Ana Helstrom was kidnapped by her father, Victoria Helstrom began losing her sanity as she fought against a demon trying to possess her. Daimon Helstrom then contacted the Behavior Health Department and had them bring her in, where she was eventually committed to Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health[1] after being completely possessed.[2] Once Ana returned, she and Daimon were put in the care of the hospital, and the psychologist said that Ana experienced low empathy. Meanwhile, Daimon continually had night terrors. While working with Ana, one of the nurses at Saint Teresa's fainted due to her demonic abilities, reporting that she felt as though she was dying.
Louise Hastings and Caretaker discussed the Helstrom siblings while the two were separate rooms, Ana's room being visible from Caretaker and Hastings' through a glass window. Hastings told him about Ana's low empathy and Daimon's night terrors, and Caretaker asked her what to do. Hastings told him about the nurse that fainted, and Caretaker realized that she had abilities. He told Hastings that the Blood would come after her given the amount of time they had been hunting her father, and the potential for them to pick up where their father left off, upsetting Hastings. Caretaker told her that if the two were kept apart and out of sight there might be hope. Hastings asked Caretaker to take Ana, and Caretaker explained that she was in the foster care system and that he would check in on her occasionally. Hastings assured Caretaker that she could handle Daimon, and he reminded her that their lives depended on it. Ana then used her abilities to break the glass, scaring Hastings.
The two were separated[3] while Victoria Helstrom remained in Saint Teresa's. Feeling responsible for his mother getting committed, Daimon regularly visited her and did whatever he could to help. He developed demonic abilities of his own, including the ability to exorcise demons, although he could not use it on Kthara, the demon possessing his mother.[4] Eventually, Helstrom figured out that he could get his mother to temporarily resume control of her body by telling her about a happy memory from his childhood.[5]
Escape[]
While possessing Victoria Helstrom, Kthara managed to convince a nurse named Keith Spivey to break two patients, Hock and Liddle out of the secure ward of the hospital. Spivey turned off the security cameras and brought the two of them out, killing Steven when he tried to stop the trio. While Spivey escaped, Kthara used her demonic abilities against Louise Hastings, who was writing a letter regarding another patient. Hastings rushed to the secure ward where she found Steven's corpse and recognized that Kthara was responsible.
The next day, Hastings had Ellis show Gabriella Rosetti and Daimon Helstrom the footage of Spivey visiting Kthara, so Helstrom confronted the demon. While Kthara attempting to overpower and manipulate Helstrom, he gave up interrogating her and left the room. Helstrom reported the results of the conversation to Hastings and Rosetti, only learning about a symbol on the wall of her room. Rosetti became frustrated with Helstrom's lack of understanding of his conversation with Kthara, so she left to write a report for the Archbishop. Hastings scolded Helstrom for his treatment of Rosetti, explaining her merits. The conversation turned to Helstrom's inability to help him sister, who refused to return to Portland. Hastings said it might be better that way, so Helstrom left, upset. Rosetti finished her report, and the Vatican expressed concern about Hastings allowing Helstrom to perform exorcisms.[4]
Revealing the Truth[]
Gabriella Rosetti prepared to leave, although Louise Hastings appeared to ask Rosetti to forgive Daimon Helstrom. Rosetti shared the Vatican's concerns with Hastings and demanded to see Victoria Helstrom. Instead, Hastings handed her her ID badge for Saint Teresa's and told her to look at the hospital's files on Daimon, his sister, and their serial killer father. Rosetti looked through the files and learned about their past. Hastings later joined Rosetti and explained that the evil which Rosetti read about was something that the Helstroms had to live with every day. Rosetti asked why Daimon could not exorcise his mother, and Hastings explained their uncertainty regarding it. Hastings' lung cancer began acting up, causing her to having a coughing fit and cough blood. While Rosetti got water, Hastings quickly left her office. Rosetti stole Hastings' ID badge in order to visit Victoria.
Rosetti entered Victoria's room and attempted to talk to her, although Kthara instead toyed with her, trying to kill her. Luckily, Hastings figured out that her badge was missing and had Ellis show her security footage of Rosetti entering the room. Daimon Helstrom returned at that moment and she and Hastings rushed in to save Rosetti's life. Kthara stopped the attack when Victoria briefly took over her own body, warning the others to run. Although Helstrom wanted to reunite with his mother, Hastings forced him out the door.
Hastings and Helstrom told Rosetti the truth about demons, and explained that they were dangerous. Helstrom revealed that the reason for his visit was that he had discovered the meaning of the symbol Kthara drew on her wall, "consumption." Rosetti, still in shock, commented on Kthara's evil nature. Helstrom reminded her that she was the one who wanted to learn about demons and left, frustrated. Outside of the building, Helstrom found that his sister, Ana Helstrom, had retried to Portland, intending to visit their mother.[4] The siblings left together and ate at a local restaurant.[5]
Visited by Ana Helstrom[]
Ana Helstrom visited Saint Teresa's in hope of seeing her mother, Victoria Helstrom, having received the proper clearance from Daimon Helstrom. However, Louise Hastings refused to allow her to go in alone, even as Helstrom threatened to kill her. Hastings insisted that she accompany Helstrom, who agreed to the deal. The two entered Victoria's room, to find Kthara completely in control. Unable to bring out her mother or think of a pleasant childhood memory involving the two, she slapped Kthara, prompting the demon to throw them both against the wall.
While Gabriella Rosetti received a phone call from Father Sean Okamoto about a man who had apparently been possessed, Daimon Helstrom returned to Saint Teresa's and scolded his sister for her recklessness. The two argued, causing their powers to start acting up, so Hastings defused it. Rosetti entered Hastings' office and explained the possession. Daimon and Rosetti then left together.
Ana Helstrom then visited Kthara again, who taunted Helstrom for wanting to see her mother. However, Helstrom declared her intention to see Kthara, demanding to know what demon had been set loose by Keith Spivey, Hock, and Liddle. Helstrom tried to kill Kthara, who instead rendered Helstrom unconscious. Kthara lay Helstrom's body over her lap and began petting her, until Helstrom came to. Kthara then told Helstrom the demon who had escaped was Helstrom's father.[5]
Victoria's Return[]
The encounter with Ana Helstrom gave Victoria Helstrom enough strength to regain control of her body. Daimon Helstrom was elated to hear this, and Victoria began rambling and asking for Ana. Daimon called Ana from Saint Teresa's, convincing her to help try to bring their mother back permanently. Ana later arrived and the two visited, finding Victoria delusional, asking whether the two had enjoyed playing in the snow. Going along with her delusion, Daimon suggested the three build a snowman together, when Victoria suddenly said that their father would be back soon and would be angry if they were found outside. Victoria began to have a breakdown, and Ana tried to help, but quickly gave up. Kthara regained control, revealing to Daimon that their father was in fact returning.
Daimon and Ana explained what happened to Gabriella Rosetti and Louise Hastings, who determined that the unfinished business would refer to Zoe Richards, a young girl who had supposedly escaped their father. Although Ana refused to believe it, they decided to warn Richards anyway, although Helstrom suggested using her to draw their father out.[6]
Caretaker's Return[]
Louise Hastings went out to get medicine for herself, later returning to find Caretaker in her office. Caretaker asked why he felt as though Hastings was hiding something from him, and Hastings said she would call him more. Hastings mentioned needing to visit Kthara, and Caretaker asked to see her as well. Hastings took Caretaker to Kthara, who opened the panel to allow Caretaker to see her, before quickly closing it again. Kthara then sent a message to Tooms, telling him to kill Caretaker.
Caretaker asked about when the Daimon and Ana Helstrom were returning, and Hastings told him that she did not know. The two agreed to go to lunch together, but Kthara pulled the fire alarm before they could leave, while everyone started evacuating. While Hastings left to check on security, the patients and staff evacuated. Tooms attacked Caretaker and Hastings, although Caretaker managed to stop it. He helped Hastings up, noticing her bottle of medicine, which she took back quickly.
Back in Hastings' office, Hastings explained that Tooms was not usually violent. Caretaker said that it was the result of Kthara's manipulation, and that the Helstrom siblings were not immune to that, so it was important that Hastings and Caretaker stay on the same page. He guessed that she had cancer, which she confirmed. Caretaker embraced Hastings, who explained that she was refusing chemotherapy. She asked Caretaker if he wanted to get tacos, and he agreed.[6]
Keeper's Arrival[]
Ellis returned to work the next day, where he saw Kthara behaving normally. Sometime later, however, she went unconscious and began deteriorating, which Louise Hastings discovered once Ellis mentioned that she had been quiet. Hastings realized that her health was declining, so she resolved to take Kthara outside for fresh air. While outside, the two talked as Kthara reminisced feeling the sun and wind, saying she had not felt it in a long time. She talked about her children, describing the memory of them being taken as too painful. Hastings asked why she was acting differently, and she talked about appreciating life. When Hastings asked who she was, she told her that her name was Kthara, and that she, like Hastings, had been betrayed by what she held dear.
Meanwhile, Chris Yen arrived underneath Kthara's room, under the influence of the Keeper's skull. He set the skull on the ground as he noted the spiders surrounded him and his dislike of the skull's chosen location. As Kthara was being brought back to her room, she sensed the Keeper's presence and refused to be brought back in. Kthara confessed to being responsible for Hastings' cancer, and Hastings told the guards to bring her in, so they picked wheelchair in. Hastings watched as Kthara screamed in agony.
Hastings later met with another patient, although found herself struggling to take notes, so she dismissed him. Rosetti entered, asking about a hotel run by the Blood in Portland. Hastings explained that the Blood were ancient and their old ways did not concern the two of them, but Rosetti got upset that Hastings was apparently defending them. She explained that the Vatican already knew, and that their complacency was one of many reasons she left. She went on to talk about how she learned to place her faith in people, and that Rosetti and Hastings did not have to use the Blood's methods. She reminded Rosetti that, despite methodological disagreements, the only enemy Rosetti and Hastings faced were demons.
Kthara continued screaming well into the night, while underground, Yen began drinking and staring at the skull, which revealed its eye to him.[7] Kthara begins scratching at the floor, eventually getting rendered unconscious by the Keeper's power while she continued scratching. The next morning, Hastings checked on Kthara again, finding her still unconscious and scratching. She rushed in, and told the orderly to get help. Daimon Helstrom was contacted and arrived, and Daimon explained that their mother had gone into a coma. Upon getting close, he sensed a presence and contacted Ana Helstrom. When she arrived, Daimon told her what had happened, and she sensed the same presence, identifying it as the Keeper's Skull, realizing that Chris Yen had brought it to Saint Teresa's. Daimon, Ana, and Hastings checked the security camera while Caretaker checked the building, and nobody found Yen. Ana told the group that Yen was being influenced by the skull, and Caretaker explained that it was likely connected to Kthara due to its blood oath regarding the Helstroms' father, who marked Victoria Helstrom for possession. Caretaker explained that Victoria could be in danger if she continued to be exposed to the skull, and Hastings realized that the skull was likely underground. So, Daimon, Ana, and Caretaker went underneath the hospital to find Yen.
While Hastings watched Kthara, Daimon, Ana, and Caretaker found the spot under the hospital where Yen was staying. Daimon and Caretaker argued about whether they should destroy the skull, while Ana found Yen's bag. While Daimon and Caretaker investigated the bag and the mice Yen had eaten, Ana sensed somebody moving further into the sewer, so she followed without saying anything. Daimon turned around and saw Ana gone, worrying him and Caretaker. While they continued to search for Yen, Hastings and another employee watched Victoria's body carefully. As Victoria went into cardiac arrest, Ana, Daimon, and Caretaker discovered that Yen had climbed out of the sewers and back into Saint Teresa's.
Yen made his way back into the hospital with skull, following a group of nurses and security guards towards Victoria's seizing body. Daimon and Ana appeared, and Daimon knocked Yen unconscious. While Ana checked on him, Daimon checked on his mother, seeing what was happening to her. He began destroying the skull, while Hastings watched Victoria begin to flatline. A crack appeared in the skull when Victoria suddenly sat up and told Daimon to stop, as she had realized that the skull was containing Kthara.
Victoria, Ana, and Daimon then met in the courtyard, where Victoria told them about Kthara being terrified of the Keeper. While Daimon was happy about the family reunion, Ana was more dismissive of Victoria, who was overjoyed to see her children. Meanwhile, Yen's arms were bandaged and he was put in a room at Saint Teresa's, where he began pacing, needing the skull. When Ana Helstrom, Hastings, and Caretaker went to check on him, Yen rushed against the panel on the door and begged for them to bring him the skull. Hastings and Caretaker assured her that hospitalization was the best thing for Yen and that the obsession should subside, and Helstrom expressed how upset she was about Yen, despite things working out for Victoria.
Later, Gabriella Rosetti returned to her office after spending the day talking to a formerly possessed student, and looked at Father Joshua Crow's missing poster. Daimon Helstrom visited and asked how it went with the student, and she explained that formerly possessed people need more help than Helstrom knew. Helstrom told Rosetti that he had a better idea, since his mother had regained control of her body. Feeling guilty, Rosetti told Helstrom that she needed to show him something urgent, so the two left together.[1]
Kthara's Escape[]
Ana Helstrom and Chris Yen spent time together, at one point eating chips together when Yen asked why she had not bring napkins. Helstrom told Yen that she contacted his boyfriend to cover for him not being in San Francisco, and Yen thanked her. She asked what the Keeper Demon had been saying to him while he was enchanted, and he explained that while he could not understand the Keeper's exact words, he could feel what it wanted. Yen apologized for trying to kill Helstrom's mother, Victoria Helstrom, and Ana said that he would have been doing them a favor. Yen then told Ana something that she had forgotten about, crying for Victoria when she first got to the foster home. Ana insisted that she did not cry, and Yen assured her that she did. He told her that it was ok to miss her mother, and Helstrom took that as a cue to leave. She asked him not to lecture her, but he continued, saying that at least Victoria was still alive. She assured him she would visit her mother, and Yen tried to leave, but Helstrom did not let him. Yen rushed to the door after it closed, screaming that the Keeper's Skull needed him. Helstrom greeted Ellis and told him to tell her and Louise Hastings if he continued complaining. Ellis told Helstrom that patients usually calmed down, and Helstrom told him that Yen was a special case and that he might not.
Meanwhile, Helstrom went to get lunch, when Hastings approached and asked why she was not with her mother while Daimon Helstrom was out with Gabriella Rosetti, telling her about the Blood Hotel and the freeing of several demons that occurred there. Helstrom tried to call Caretaker, but Hastings explained that she was answered by a full voicemail while the same happened to Helstrom. Hastings asked Helstrom to stay with her mother, despite Helstrom's reservations. As she walked away, Hastings reminded her not to mention the freeing of the demons.
Helstrom went to her mother's room and commented on the color of the backpack in which she was keeping the Keeper's Skull, which Hastings had found in the lost and found. Victoria thanked Ana for bringing her food, and Victoria tried to ask about Yen, but Ana quickly shut down the conversation. Victoria asked where Ana was living, so she said she lived in San Francisco. Victoria tried to tell Ana about when she went to San Francisco as a kid, but Ana again shut down the conversation, tired of the small talk. Ana asked whether Victoria knew that her husband was a serial killer, not believing her mother when she said that she did not. Ana asked angrily whether her ignorance was willful, and Victoria talked about how kind he was to her when they first met. She talked about how every time she would get suspicious of her husband's darkness, he would show that same kindness again, but then eventually became suspicious, although she could not flee. Helstrom commented on the depressing nature of the room, asking for a change of pace.
Hastings received a phone call from Daimon Helstrom and told him that Caretaker had not answered her yet. Helstrom explained that he and Rosetti had not yet arrived at Saint Teresa's due to a flat tire, and Hastings told him that his sister was with his mother. Although Helstrom did not like the idea, Hastings stayed with her choice and hung up on him.
Later, Ellis checked the security cameras when Basar came in. Recognizing him as Keith Spivey, Ellis tried to hit the alarm, but Basar killed him before he could. He made his way to Victoria Helstrom's room and broke in, finding that she was not there, since Ana Helstrom had taken her outside. The Helstroms talked about the botanical gardens near Ana's childhood home, where Ana enjoyed getting her hands dirty and climbing trees, although Ana interrupted Victoria, telling her that she hated getting her hands dirty. Helstrom asked why her father gave her various gifts, and Victoria told her that he had always thought of her as a protege. She then reminded Ana that she also inherited a lot of traits from her. Ana then reminisced about when Victoria took her and her brother to the zoo, where she enjoyed the giraffes. Ana began to take Victoria back inside, and Victoria expressed her wish that Daimon had gotten a life outside of her, like Ana did.
As the two women got back inside, they reflected on when Ana's father kidnapped her, and Ana decided to tell Victoria about her father's newfound army. Ana told Victoria that she did not know how to kill him, and not to lose the Keeper's skull. Meanwhile, Hastings went to ask Dr. Edgar Lawrence about a patient of his, when she found Ellis' dead body. She went to her office and retrieved a weapon, ordering a security guard to lock down the ward. Hastings found Ana and Victoria, and told them that somebody had killed Ellis. Ana freed Victoria, saying that she deserved a fighting chance if Ana got hurt, when the security guard came back to tell Hastings that everyone was locked inside the hospital. The lights then went out as emergency power went on.
Basar found Dr. Lawrence and marked him for possession, and he got possessed by Magoth as the patients at the hospital started to get rowdy. Ana received a call from her brother, telling her that there was a setup and that they would get attacked by demons. Helstrom told him they were already there and hung up, going to Hastings' office with Hastings and her mother. They found Magoth in there, who stole the Keeper's Skull and fled. Hastings and Ana debated whether Ana should go after him or wait for her brother, when all of the patients were freed, including Chris Yen, who found an axe, as Daimon Helstrom and Gabriella Rosetti arrived.
Ana Helstrom and Hastings went into the common area for patients, where Hastings found a patient named Tanya and told her to go back to her room. Hastings also saw Manny and Jeff fighting, so she and Helstrom tranquilized Jeff and told Manny to return to his room. Helstrom went after Magoth and asked Hastings to stay with her mother, although Hastings insisted on going with her. Helstrom stormed off, and Hastings apologized for taking her brother in and not her when they were children, saying that she did not think she was strong enough. Helstrom told her not to get killed and left.
She went into the basement, when she got attacked by Raum and another demon. Raum said that Basar gave them permission to attack her, and Helstrom said that he had come for her. The other demon again attacked Helstrom, but Hastings stopped the attack and fought her, while Helstrom fought Raum. Hastings got pushed to the ground and both demons fought Helstrom, who started choking them nearly killed them, throwing their unconscious bodies to the ground and scaring Hastings. Helstrom told Hastings that the people were alive, just unconscious, and they continued to searching.
Meanwhile, Victoria Helstrom remained in Hastings office, where she saw a patient look into a security camera. She got attacked by the patient, who had been possessed, but rescued by Daimon Helstrom and Rosetti, who had found her. Daimon and Victoria hugged, and Daimon introduced Victoria to Rosetti before asking where the Keeper skull was.
Magoth sat with the skull and talked to it, when he got attacked brutally by Yen, who reclaimed the skull. Ana Helstrom found him, and Yen explained that he got it for her since she could use it to stop her father. Yen was hesitant to hadn't the skull over, so Helstrom confessed to remembering crying for her mother by explaining that she did not do it in the basement, but rather her foster father's workshop, saying that she truly did miss her mother. He handed over the skull, and Yen, Helstorm, and Hastings ran off, reuniting with Daimon Helstorm, Rosetti, and Victoria Helstrom.
The Helstrom siblings began arguing about whether to use the Keeper's Skull against their father, and Victoria cut in, wanting a say in her own future. She talked about failing to protect her children, and told Daimon how proud she was of him, forgiving him for having her committed. She announced her decision to sacrifice herself so that their father could be destroyed, when the elevator opened and Basar arrived, attacking them. He threw several people to the side, marked Rosetti, and escaped with Victoria. Ana and Daimon then rushed into the basement on the stairs, with the skull.
They went downstairs and found Basar, who they believed to be their father, and Ana realized that the skull was damaging the body he was possessing, so Ana began taunting him. While Daimon rushed towards their mother, Ana fought Basar and got thrown across the room. She fell into a car, and the skull fell out of her backpack and rolled across the room. Daimon then attacked Basar, angry that he hurt his sister, and got thrown against the wall while Ana slowly pulled herself up. Daimon and Basar continued fighting, while Victoria climbed underneath a truck to get the Keeper's Skull. Basar opened the mouth in the middle of his stomach, preparing to kill Daimon, when Victoria got the skull and gave it to Ana, who shoved it into his mouth, destroying his body and the skull. Still alive and possessing Spivey's now halved body, Basar writhed in pain while Ana gloated, telling who she believed to be her father that she was not like him. Basar grabbed Ana's leg, and her powers caused her to realize that he was not her father. Then, Kthara, who had resumed control of Victoria's body, brought the still conscious half of Basar's body onto the truck with her, closed the door, and left, as the truck was driven by Raum. Daimon tried to reassure Ana that their father could not hurt him anymore, although Ana, on the verge of tears, told him that Basar was not their father.[8]
Demanding Answers[]
The next day, repairs to the hospital were under way as Loman was put in a straight jacket and brought into the room Kthara was kept in. Ana and Daimon Helstrom talked about Basar being a different demon. The two briefly argued, and Daimon suggested that next time she believed somebody to be their father, she get proof. He pointed out that she did not seem to care that their mother was lost, and yelled at her for being so easily manipulated and walked away. Not ready to stop arguing, Ana went after him.
Outside the hospital, Louise Hastings and Gabriella Rosetti met and Hastings asked whether Rosetti slept. Rosetti said that she got a couple of hours of sleep, and Hastings began to tell her that she did not need to strain herself. Rosetti cut her off, however, telling her to focus on Daimon Helstrom. Hastings expressed happiness that she started to like him, and then went inside to check on him and sister. Rosetti finished her coffee and threw it out, about to follow Hastings inside, when she heard a noise from behind her. She saw it was coming from the trunk of a parked car, and opened it to find Jolene Spivey, who had been kidnapped, begging for help.
Meanwhile, Daimon and Ana continued arguing, about Daimon letting Kthara possess their mother and be alive for twenty years. Daimon accused Ana of making the choice to sacrifice their mother to kill Basar, and Ana pointed out that their mother wanted them to do it, calling her "Victoria" while doing so. Daimon asked why she called her that, and Ana said that she was no longer their mother. Hastings then returned to her office as Daimon accused Ana of being coldhearted. Hastings tried to diffuse the situation, prompting aggression from Ana. Daimon scolded her, saying that Hastings was his family and told her not to be disrespectful, prompting Ana to leave, stating her intention to return to San Francisco. Daimon continued to yell at her as she walked out, telling her to continue to pretend that he and their mother did not exist. She checked Yen out of the hospital and left.
Meanwhile, Rosetti brought Spivey into the hospital, assuring her that she would be ok, while Yen and Ana Helstrom walked past them. Rosetti asked where they were going and what would happen to their mother, and Helstrom continued to walk away, saying that it was not her problem. Rosetti took Spivey to Hastings, who tended to her wounds after Daimon Helstrom healed the mark Basar had given her. Hastings told Spivey that she was going to be ok, and Spivey told Hastings that she was not attacked by her husband, relieved when Hastings believed her. Meanwhile, Rosetti and Helstrom asked why Basar would mark her and then leave her in the car. Helstorm explained that they were probably saving her for someone important, and Rosetti guessed Kthara. Hastings then came and told them how lucky Spivey was, not realizing what Helstrom saved her from.
Helstrom told Hastings that the demons likely needed a new host for Kthara, and Rosetti asked how many more Blood Hotels there were. Hastings told her that Caretaker would know the answer, and yet was still missing. Helstrom suggested they talk to Loman, although Rosetti and Hastings told him to rest and that Hastings would attempt to contact Caretaker again. Helstrom told her not to bother, saying that he could take care of himself.
Helstrom went to sleep and dreamt about finding Kthara in his house, telling him to let out his inner darkness. Rosetti woke him up, and suggested he go home. Instead, Helstrom insisted on questioning Loman. They entered his room and asked where Kthara was, and Loman simply said she was where she needed to be. Helstrom stated his intention to exorcise Loman, and he simply said that it could not be worse than the way the Blood treated him. He told Helstrom that he would end up vilified and hunted, offering him join the demons and telling Rosetti that humans started the war between humans and demons, while demons simply wanted their freedom. He then said that only Kthara could free them before breaking his host body's neck, killing it.
Helstrom went for a walk, and returned after receiving a phone call from Esther Smith, when she revealed that Hastings and Caretaker made the decision to separate him and his sister. Hastings tried to explain that she wanted to wait for the right time to tell him, and told him that the Blood knew who they were and that they would have been killed if they were not separated. She explained that she could have refused to go along with it, yet she agreed to it because of her past and Helstrom's signs of improvement. Helstrom interpreted it as Hastings saying it was his fault, and Hastings said that she was not sure how to apologize. He asked if she had considered what losing his sister felt like or how it would have felt to get her back, and Hastings said that his sister scared her too much.[3]
Hiding a Dagger[]
Daimon Helstrom later drove to Saint Teresa's and sat outside in his car, reflecting on when his sister was kidnapped by their father. Meanwhile, Gabriella Rosetti went in and showed Louise Hastings the Helstrom father's dagger, which the Blood had used to attack them the previous night. Hastings told Rosetti that Archbishop Terrazi had warned her that it might happen.
Hastings went to hide the knife when Ana Helstrom walked in, having returned, asking to see it. Although Hastings did not believe it to be a good idea, she opened the safe and took the knife out, showing it to her. She sensed the darkness in it and warned her not to be around it. Although Hastings at first brushed her warning off as superstition, she began coughing violently and looked at her.
Helstrom told Hastings that she agreed with her brother, until Hastings told her that the coughing was not due to the knife, but rather due to lung cancer, the reason she hired Rosetti, and that her brother did not know. Helstrom asked who else knew, and he said only Caretaker knew. Helstrom complained about how Caretaker never stayed with her, and Hastings said that he was torn between her and the Blood. Hastings explained that the only way he would have told the Blood Helstrom's father's dagger's location was if he thought they would use it on Kthara.
Helstrom laid down in her Victoria Helstrom's old hospital room, enjoying her mother's energy. Hastings visited Helstrom and she told the daughter about it. Hastings told Helstrom that Father Joshua Crow had called and said there was a disturbance, although she was aware that Crow had been possessed, and was trying to lure our Helstrom's brother. Helstrom then determined that they would go together with the dagger and use it to kill Kthara. Hastings tried to suggest that Helstrom and her brother should go together. However, Helstrom convinced Hastings that Helstrom would not be useful there since he was too hopeful, and asked Hastings to go with her, since touching the dagger would cause too much pain for her. She asked Hastings to do it, although she refused. Helstrom began yelling at Hastings, who suggested they let her mother die. However, Helstrom explained that Kthara would be able to possess someone else unless they used the knife. Hastings said that taking a life would haunt her, but eventually decided to do it.
When the pair returned, it was with Victoria Helstrom, who had been freed from Kthara's control after being killed by Ana and revived by Hastings. Victoria was put in a gurney and Ana called Daimon Helstrom to tell him the good news. She told Helstrom not to visit until the morning and that she could handle it, although she told him that she expected him to do the talking in the morning. Meanwhile, Hastings went up to one of the doctors and told her that she wanted to revisit her treatment options for her cancer.[9]
Daimon Helstrom Possessed[]
The next morning, Ana Helstrom woke up to find that Daimon Helstrom had still not arrived to see Victoria Helstrom, so she called him and was sent to voicemail. So, she left to look for him. Meanwhile, Basar, who was possessing Daimon, entered the hospital and looked through Louise Hastings's office, picking up a picture of Hastings with a group of children and looking at it. He found Victoria Helstrom's room, and she turned to see him, wishing her a good morning and closing the door.
Helstrom expressed pride that he was with her and said that it did not matter where her daughter was. She thanked "her son" for fighting for her, and declared that her struggles were over. However, Basar explained that they were far from over and the hospital was merely his first stop. He tried to choke Helstrom to death, when Ana Helstrom entered and stopped him, realizing who he was. The two fought, and Basar gained the upper hand by grabbing her and letting her powers caused her to feel pain. However, as Basar began to get up, Ana dropped a chandelier on him. Caretaker and Hastings then arrived to see the aftermath of the fight.
They tied Basar down to a hospital bed while Helstrom demanded to know where Caretaker had been. He told her he had been taken by the Blood while Hastings closed the door to the room. She prepared to sedate him when Helstrom told them that he was possessed, despite that it should not have been possible. They realized Daimon was fighting his possession, so they gave him the tranquilizer and tried to sedate him. Basar calmly looked at them and greeted Helstrom, who demanded to know what happened to him. Helstrom threatened to get rid of him, although Basar said it was too late to stop the possession. He told them that Gabriella Rosetti was dead, although Helstrom did not believe him.
Helstrom, Caretaker, and Hastings went to Hastings' officer to discuss their plan, and Hastings realized that their dilemma was similar to the one presented by Kthara, when Helstrom realized that they were responsible for what had happened when they saved Helstrom's mother. Caretaker set out to find Rosetti, telling the others to help Daimon Helstrom, and told them that their father's dagger was the only thing that could help him, even though it might kill him. Helstrom insisted that they would find another way while Caretaker left. Helstrom went to Victoria Helstrom's room and told her what happened, convincing her to try talking to Daimon despite the potential of failure.
Hastings took the two Helstroms to Basar's room and asked to talk to her son alone. She opened the viewing panel and demanded to talk to her son, and Basar responded by threatening her and her daughter. Victoria expressed pride in Daimon, telling him that Kthara abandoned him and that he could not understand love. She told him that Kthara did not care about him, thinking about him as a tool, prompting Basar to attack her. Hastings tried to stop it, but Ana stopped her. Victoria yelled at Basar that he was not part of a family, and Basar starting manipulating the lights. Basar cracked the viewing panel and Hastings pulled her away, even though Victoria believed that she was getting through to her son. She took Victoria to Daimon's house, telling Ana that the evil at Saint Teresa's was harmful to Victoria.
Ana Helstrom sat on a bench at the hospital and was approached by Caretaker, to who expressed how upset she was to potentially kill her brother. Caretaker offered to do it, but Helstrom insisted on doing it herself. Caretaker asked her to let him do it in order to make up for not being present for her during her early life. Helstrom said that she understood why he did it, but he confessed to being afraid to get too close and end up losing her. She told him that he was not strong enough to fight her brother, and that only she could do it. She got a phone call from her mother on Hastings' phone, asking her to go to her brother's house since something was wrong with Gabriella Rosetti, since something was wrong with her. She told Helstrom that she was pregnant full term, and Helstrom explained that Kthara was trying to get her own body. She sent Caretaker to the house and picked up the larger half of her father's dagger.
She brought it into Basar's room, and he smiled at her while she prepared to use it. He taunted her about saying goodbye to her brother, although Helstrom said that she was ready to say goodbye to Basar. Basar expressed confidence that Helstrom would not use the dagger on him since her brother would also die, although Helstrom egged him on. Basar used her powers to manipulate her body, talking about her brother's memories and pushing her back. He talked about how much they cared about each other and how upset Daimon Helstrom was when Ana got taken and the amount of guilt he felt about having his mother committed, revealing that he tried to take his own life. Although Ana did not believe him, he kept talking and turned the knife on Helstrom and explained that Kthara wanted him to protect her because he was good at killing demons. He expressed regret that Victoria Helstrom could not see Ana's death, and Helstrom told Basar that they had Rosetti was the only person keeping Kthara alive as she fought Basar's powers. He charged at her, when Daimon fighting him suddenly caused him to collapse. Ana prepared to cut the demon out of her brother, when he suddenly woke up as himself. Ana told him about Rosetti's pregnancy, as he said that he could not free her. Daimon asked Ana to cut the demon out of him, and she began stabbed into him. Daimon's body started to burn as he yelled at her to stop. He explained that it would not work without both pieces of the dagger, so she left to retrieve the second piece, although she found that Caretaker had taken it.
She told him what was happening, so he asked her to keep Rosetti safe. He said that he would hold out long enough for her to get back, and she left to keep Rosetti safe while he continued to struggle. The two continued to struggle for control of his body as they forced it against walls and struggled, moving around the room. Helstrom threw himself against several walls, as well as the ceiling and floor, ending his own life in order to prevent his possession.[10] Dr. Katherine Reynolds found his body and examined it, noting how bizarre the death was. She had it brought to the morgue for autopsy and asked someone to reach out to Louise Hastings.
When Ana Helstrom returned with Victoria Helstrom, they found that he had died, as she was told by Reynolds. Reynolds said that he was in the morgue, so Ana ran downstairs to stop Basar, who attacked the mortician. Ana made it to the morgue and found the mortician barely alive, calling him lucky. In Hastings' office, Ana told Victoria what had happened, and that Caretaker could not help until Hastings was out of surgery. Ana assured Victoria that Hastings was too tough to die. Victoria asked how Ana knew that Daimon was not dead, so Ana explained that the siblings were special, and that that was how their father put it. They talked about when Ana was kidnapped, which Victoria said was far worse than her fight with Kthara. Victoria asked how she escaped, and Ana explained that he caught her and buried her alive, saying she needed to understand real fear and suffering. Victoria embraced her daughter, and the two were interrupted by Chris Yen, telling them he had an eyeball in his throat.
Ana and Yen went out to see Caretaker, and the three returned together. Caretaker told Ana and Victoria that the demons had captured Rosetti while Yen looked at Ana's father's dagger. Caretaker explained that they only let the demons take Rosetti because Daimon was there, and Ana was the only person who could fight him. Ana asked how to reforge the dagger, and Yen explained that it requires fire and blood, and that Ana was the only person who could do it. Although Ana did not believe she could manipulate fire or that she could handle the pain, but Victoria said that she would hold Ana and feel the pain herself. Ana hesitantly agreed to the plan.
They went to Victoria's old hospital room to reforge the weapon, and Yen went outside in case the room burned down. Ana took the two pieces of the knife and put them together, as they started taking in the pain. They saw several people get stabbed by the knife, including Daimon, as Helstrom's fire reforged the knife. The two fell took deep breaths, as the knife sat in one piece.[11]
Kthara's New Host[]
Following the final confrontation with Basar, Magoth, and Raum, during which Kthara's new host was born, the infant was brought to Saint Teresa's and kept in the same room where Kthara stayed while possessing Victoria Helstrom. Chris Yen watched over Kthara, when Ana Helstrom came into to see her. She asked if the child had been displaying anything unusual, which Yen said she hadn't. Yen asked when Daimon Helstrom would take the child home, and Ana said that he would once they were positive the child would not destroy the world, which Yen said was his job according to the mark on his arm since he could keep the child from harming others and herself, asking for her help and her father's knife. Yen had Helstrom perform a ritual involving the knife. Kthara was then taken to Daimon Helstrom's house.[11]
