Ivy Hibiscus Matcha Sundew[2] is a supporting character of Amphibia. She is Felicia Sundew's daughter and Sprig's friend, sparring partner, and subsequently his girlfriend. She lives in Felicia's Tea Shoppe in Wartwood Swamp with her mother.
Appearance[]
Body[]
Ivy bears an innocent appearance and is significantly smaller and more portly than Sprig. Her skin is yellow with a pale patch under her mouth and dark spots on her cheeks and her two visible tufts of hair are orange. In "The Shut-In!", Ivy is seen to have a large mass of wild hair that embarrasses her, though Sprig is very fond of it.
By the time of the epilogue, Ivy has grown noticeably taller and slimmer. She also no longer keeps her hair hidden under a hat, giving her a hairstyle roughly reminiscent of Anne's.
Clothing[]
She wears a turquoise hat with ragged patches, frayed overalls, and light green farming clothes.
When she joined the Wartwood Resistance, Ivy donned a giant, gray breastplate over her outfit much similar to Anne when she donned a new breastplate in "Bessie & MicroAngelo". The armor had four dents and a scar much similar to King Andrias' in term of placement and appearance-wise. The breastplate also had a lighter gray line where it ends and resembles a torn dress at the bottom. To accompany this new war look, Ivy's dress has two rips by the leg and partially torn sleeves. Her hat has also gained a hole on the right side of her head exposing a glint of her hair.
In the epilogue, Ivy still wears her t-shirt, but now sports a pair of blue jeans with a rope belt, a teal cloak with a red shell tie, and she no longer wears her hat.
Personality[]
Ivy is a loud energetic frog similar to Sprig. Ivy likes to "ambush" Sprig a lot and is still very loud and energetic. She is stated to be his sparring partner and seems to be very amiable towards new people she meets. She can also be forceful, as seen when she asked Anne if she likes being randomly attacked, and responded with "Too bad" when told no.
Background[]
Early life[]
Ivy Hibiscus Matcha Sundew was born as the only child of Felicia Sundew[3] and an unknown man,[2] being also the granddaughter of Sylvia Sundew.[4] Little is known about her father, although he was a traveler according to her mother.[2] At some point, Ivy met Sprig Plantar and became a close friend with him, also liking to ambush him.[3] Felicia also began to give her lessons and tea exercises, with the purpose of preparing Ivy to go out into the world.[2]
Date with Sprig[]
One day, when Sprig and Anne are exploring the woods, Ivy ambushes Sprig and then is introduced to Anne, and she then took off promising to do another ambush. After she leaves, Anne begins to suspect that Sprig may have a crush on her, although he denies it. After Hop Pop hears that Sprig might have a crush on Ivy, he proposes to Felicia a courtship in which Sprig and Ivy go on a ritual date at the Firefly Festival as a way to bring the two families together for profit, and Felicia agrees.
That night, Ivy attends the festival forced by her mother, and there, she and Sprig dance as part of the ritual, however, as they dance, Sprig confesses that he doesn't really want to go out with her and that he agreed to go to the festival with her because he was convinced that it was a good idea, to which Ivy tells him that she also attends because she didn't want to hurt him and because her mother forced her. They decide to abandon the ritual and go to have fun, however, Felicia, Hop Pop, Anne, and Polly go after them given that if they do not finish the dance, the courtship will be ruined; however, while they do, they're captured by Love Doves.
Ivy and Sprig remove the outfits they were forced to wear and start to have some fun and look at the fireflies, however, while they are watching, they notice that their families are captured by the Love Doves, so they go to rescue them. Sprig and Ivy rescue them and in doing so, they tell them that they don't want to date each other, however, the Love Doves return, so Ivy and Sprig begin to fight them and defeat them. Then, Felicia takes Ivy home to "safely apologize", and Ivy says goodbye to Sprig. After Ivy and Felicia leave, Hop Pop apologizes to Sprig and Anne tells him that now he and Ivy can go back to being just friends like before, however, both she and Sprig realize that Sprig has fallen in love with Ivy.[3]
Movie night[]
One night, after an acting troupe cancels their performance, Ivy watches the movie Love Choice, after which a fight breaks out over those who chose Hunter and those who chose Alastair. When the next movie night occurs after the civil war, Ivy attends to it again.[5]
Taking Sprig's blue moon shell[]
When Sprig finds a blue moon shell, he plans to give it to Ivy for her birthday the next day, and leaves it outside the Plantar Farm so as not to dirty it while he does his tasks, even though Anne advises him not to, as it could be stolen. Ivy finds the moon shell when she goes to the farm to look for Sprig, but when she doesn't find him and sees the blue moon shell, she takes it to her home to clean and polish it. Later, after Sprig and Anne search for the shell all over Wartwood without success, Ivy appears and gives the shell to Sprig, but he gives it back to Ivy as an early birthday present, and Ivy thanks him but prefers to leave it with him at the farm, since every time she sees it glow she will know it is near to Sprig's house.[6]
The Hiber Day[]
When the Hiber Day arrives, Ivy, her mother, and the rest of Wartwood are frozen by the low temperature, but Anne takes care of everyone so that nothing happens to them. Ivy alongside her mother and the rest of the people are later unfrozen when Hiber Day is over.[7]
Anne's party and reunion[]
At some point, Ivy begins to fall in love with Sprig, however, she is unable to confess her feelings to him. When Anne is named Frog of the Year and is planning her party, she asks Sprig to confess his feelings to Ivy to make the party amazing, and Sprig reluctantly accepts. Ivy attends Anne's Frog of the Year party, and there she greets Sprig when he runs up to her, but he runs away from her since he is afraid to confess to her. Later, Ivy approaches Sprig and nervously asks him if he would want to go out with her sometime, and immediately blushes and prepares to leave in embarrassment, but Sprig stops her and tells her that he would love to. This makes Ivy happy and the two go dancing, officially starting a relationship together.[8]
That same night, she also attends the banquet at the South Toad Tower that Captain Grime and Sasha Waybright organize "for the reunion between Anne and Sasha", although it's really a hoax to catch and execute Hop Pop. However, Ivy along with the rest of Wartwood manage to escape from the Toad Tower and return to the town.[9]
The Plantars' trip to Newtopia[]
When some citizens start asking Hop Pop and Polly for some things from Newtopia as they will go on a trip there, Ivy asks them for a red sun shell from Newtopia coast to match with Sprig's blue moon shell.[10]
When they return from the trip, Ivy welcomes Sprig with an ambush, and she is excited about the red sun shell the Plantars have "brought" her, as are the others about their commissioned things, so they decide to have a party that night. Hop Pop and Polly, however, forgot the list the entire trip and didn't bring anything requested, so they decide to summon the demon bird Chicka-lisk, to eat the apparent gifts as an offering, and Sprig supports them as he doesn't want to disappoint Ivy for forgetting the sun shell.
At the party, everyone gathers, however, Chicka-lisk shows up and when he is about to eat the gifts as his offering, Ivy encourages the people to not allow it because of the Plantars' effort to bring them, so they start fighting the monster. When the fight starts, Chicka-lisk turns almost everyone to stone and makes a whirlwind that sends Ivy flying, but she is saved by Sprig. The citizens make a formation to chase Chicka-lisk away, succeeding. Ivy and the citizens, however, are disappointed at not being able to save the gifts, and seeing it, Anne makes the Plantars confess that they summoned Chicka-lisk because they forgot to bring them gifts. Everyone is surprised and although they are angry at first, they end up forgetting about it because they missed the family. Sprig apologizes to Ivy for not getting her the sun shell, but she tells him it was just a shell and that he could make it up to her by taking her on a date, and then gives him a kiss on the cheek, which stuns him.[10]
Family problems[]
One day, when Ivy is leaving early to go on a glitter bug hunt with Sprig, Felicia stops her and tells her that she must first finish her asks at the tea shop, and upon checking her homework she realizes that she left a dirty plate and that the napkin swan collars were poorly done, so Felicia tells her that if she wants to leave she must do her work right, which angers Ivy. When Ivy finally meets Sprig, they find Anne and Polly practicing Muay Thai, and ask them if they want to practice it, but Ivy and Sprig decline to do their hunting. After Sprig tells Ivy a bit about their trip to Wartwood, they come across a rare insect which they decide to hunt, but as they are about to do so, they are interrupted by Felicia, who from a phone-like bee creature tells her that she is late for her tea lessons, and although Ivy tells her that they have just started the hunt, Felicia tells her to go to the lesson right away. At home, Felicia assesses her attention to detail, and there she compares a table that Felicia set versus one that Ivy set, which has a half-open cup, and though Ivy says there is little difference, Felicia tells her that details count. In the lesson, Ivy and Felicia make napkin swans, dip the tea, and put the tablecloths on the table, however, it all goes wrong for Ivy, so Felicia says they will have to redo the lesson, but Ivy gets angry and has an argument with her mother, and subsequently, storms off to her room in anger, telling her mother that she doesn't understand her. In her room, Ivy continues to be angry, and after seeing some posters in her room, she decides that she will run away from home.
Ivy heads to the Plantar Farm and there tells Sprig that they will escape from the valley that night, taking advantage of the fact that Sprig apparently had friends in every town along the way to Newtopia. While running in the woods, Sprig tries to tell Ivy that he exaggerated what he said, but at that moment her mother from the bee phone chases them and tells Ivy that she is in trouble, but Ivy tells her that she and Sprig will escape from Wartwood and throws the phone in the bushes, from which Felicia comes out and tells them both that they are in trouble, so Ivy grabs Sprig and they start to escape. Ivy and Sprig run to where Anne, Polly, and Wally are practicing Muay Thai, and Felicia catches up with them and starts an argument between her and Ivy, where Ivy ends up telling her that she wishes she wasn't her daughter. After that, Ivy apologizes and says that she is just tired of so many tea lessons, and that she just wants to go out into the world and learn martial arts like Muay Thai. Felicia then proposes that she won't have to take anymore lessons if she beats her in a three-round martial arts fight, and that she will only have to win one round.
Ivy thinks it will be simple to beat her mother, but to her surprise, her mother has martial skills, which complicates her victory, especially because of her impatience. After winning the first two rounds, Felicia is about to beat her in the last round, so Ivy resigns herself, but Felicia tells her to fold the swan napkin, and by "folding the napkin", she frees herself from Felicia; Felicia then tells her to dip the tea, which causes her to defend herself from the attacks and manages to grab her mother; finally, she tells her to change the tablecloth, and causes Ivy to beat Felicia. Ivy, surprised, asks her where she learned those moves, to which she says it was thanks to her travels, revealing to her that actually, the tea lessons are to prepare her to accompany her on her next tea-stocking adventure so that Ivy can finally go out and explore the world, but that she must be patient because of the dangers. Ivy reconciles with her mother, and tells her that she is the best mom in the world.[2]
Battle of the Bands[]
When a Battle of the Bands is held in Wartwood after spinning the Wheel of Fun, Ivy and her mother attend to it. Later, she and the other attendees witness Grime's harp act, a spectacle that brings everyone to tears, including her. She poses shortly thereafter in Wartwood's farewell photo of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy, as they are to be sent home by King Andrias the next day.[11]
War in Amphibia and joining the Wartwood Resistance[]
When King Andrias shows his true dark nature and begins to create many frobots for an army, Ivy, Mayor Toadstool, Toadie, Wally, Mrs. Croaker, Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger witness the frobots going to Newtopia Castle.[12]
After the King mortally wounds Marcy and Anne and the Plantars escape to Earth through the Calamity Box, Sasha and Grime escape to Wartwood, where they tell everyone what happened, though telling them that Anne sent them to protect them and skipping over the fact that an army of frobots is going to destroy Wartwood for killing them both. After feeling bad for lying to the citizens, she decides to do so and summons everyone, telling them that in reality Anne and the Plantars were teleported unwillingly, when suddenly the frobots arrive and start attacking them; however, everyone in the town, including Ivy, start defending both of them from being killed and manage to defeat the frobots. Everyone forgives Sasha and cheers her on.[13]
Soon after, Sasha and Grime create the Wartwood Resistance against King Andrias, and Ivy joins it.[14]
Sprivy's mission[]
Shortly after Anne and the Plantars return to Amphibia,[15] Ivy and Sprig start to spend a lot of time together, so much so that it drives everyone else crazy. Sometime soon after, Sasha recruits her, Sprig, Stumpy, and Fern on a mission to destroy a laser cannon that blocks the way for a wealthy pro-Wartwood elite to supply the resistance. However, she splits them into two teams, Ivy being with Fern to disable the power source protecting the weapon, and Sprig with Stumpy to take down the cannons. Sprig and Ivy try to convince Sasha to allow "Sprivy" to stay together, but she declines. Ivy and Sprig then decide to trick Stumpy and Fern with a fake letter from Sasha, in which she switches the teams and puts Ivy and Sprig together to take down the cannons and Stumpy and Fern to take care of the power source, and they manage to do so.
Both teams fail to do their missions successfully, and when Stumpy and Fern are attacked by the shield generator, Ivy and Sprig realize their mistake and decide to do things as Sasha ordered, and manage to deactivate the generator and the cannon. When they meet Sasha, she guesses correctly that Ivy and Sprig almost ruined the mission by not being able to be separated, and tells them that she made the teams because she needed two of the best commandos protecting two of the best specialists, and both finally understand Sasha's intention. Later, Wigbert Ribbiton arrives as the frog with the supplements for the resistance, and Ivy immediately notices a similarity between Wigbert and Wally, not knowing that Wigbert is in fact Wally's father.[14]
Caring for kill-a-pillars[]
When Anne's old pet in Amphibia, Domino 2, is caught by one of Andrias' drones, Anne asks the resistance, including Felicia, to take care of Domino 2's offspring. All of them oppose at first, but eventually, give in and become attached to the animals, and even Ivy helps her mother take care of them.[16]
Fighting the king[]
When the Resistance finally goes to fight Andrias and his army, Ivy takes part in the battle. However, when the Core captures Sasha, Anne, Grime, and the Plantars, it declares the Resistance had lost and proceeds to go to Earth to initiate a planned invasion of the place.[17] Despite this, Ivy and the rest of the Resistance continue fighting the Frobot army in Amphibia. Meanwhile, on Earth, Anne and Sasha manage to defeat Andrias and the Core, freeing Marcy from the Core's control and declaring victory for the resistance.[18] After finally defeating the Core and preventing the moon from crashing into Amphibia, the girls bid farewell forever to everyone there and return to their home on Earth.[19]
After the war[]
Nine months later,[1] Ivy resumed her normal life, and now is with her hair uncovered. She attends the ceremony to unveil the statue of Anne that Wartwood made in her honor, and there she notifies Sprig that Grime found a continent that has been never touched by any amphibian, and asks him if he is up to exploring it; Sprig accepts, and the two set off for yet another adventure.[19]
Powers and abilities[]
- Martial arts: As seen in "Ivy on the Run", thanks to Felicia's tea lessons, Ivy unknowingly acquired martial arts skills, using them during fights.
Relationships[]
Felicia Sundew[]
Ivy loves her mother, but she was initially shown to be strict and overbearing to her. Felicia expected Ivy to obey her and complete her chores perfectly. Ivy lacked the patience to put up with Felicia's rules, but soon learned that her mother was teaching her self-defense through those strict chores. Ivy came to appreciate her mother for understanding her desire for adventure and promising to take her on one in the future. Ivy cares about Felicia and is shown to hug her mother whenever something dangerous is happening. Ivy is also shown to help Felicia with running her tea shop and hold her mother's hand like most children do.
Sprig Plantar[]
Ivy had been friends with Sprig for a long time. The two are so close that they are comfortable with rough housing with one another and hanging out casually. While not confirmed until "Anne of the Year", Ivy has apparently had a crush on Sprig for a long time. This was slightly hinted at in "Croak & Punishment" where she opted to have a blue moon shell, which was initially meant for her as a birthday present, stay with Sprig so that she will know when she is close to his house. It is confirmed that they are very much in love with one another and that they can't stand being apart even for a second, but eventually accept that they have to separate every now and then after they nearly fail an important mission.
Anne Boonchuy[]
Anne first met Ivy in "Dating Season" and was initially a little put off by Ivy wanting to ambush her. Although this feeling subsides when Anne joins Hop Pop and Felicia in getting her and Sprig to court. By the end of the episode, she and Sprig talk about how they are only friends to which Anne joins in to apologize. They do not interact until Anne once again tries to force Sprig to confess his feelings at the party in "Anne of the Year", showing she is very supportive of their relationship. In "Return to Wartwood", Anne states she'll help the Plantars but only for Sprivy as she "won't let that ship sink". When Sprig and Ivy make plans to go on a date, Anne is overjoyed to the point Polly had to pull her away. In "The Shut-In!", Anne has many questions about Sprig's stories, one of them being about Ivy being bitten. As Ivy scares the Plantars, Anne has about the same reaction as the Plantars, being impressed. In "Ivy on the Run", Anne is shown to cheer Ivy on when she defeats Felicia.

Trivia[]
- Despite stating that he didn't have any friends before he met Anne in "Best Fronds", it's revealed in "Dating Season" that Sprig has known Ivy for a longer time and that they are sparing partners/friends, meaning that Ivy was a friend before he and Anne met.
- However, this could be just a bad habit of Sprig as he does the same thing in "Spider-Sprig" with Cloak-Bot's arm.
- It's also possible that he simply didn't feel they were close enough to be considered friends, possible due to his crush on her.
- In "The Shut-In!", it is implied that Ivy has a fear of showing her big hair in public, that being the reason for her wearing a cap. However, since the episode is not canon for the series, it is unknown how true this is.
- Her full name, Ivy Hibiscus Matcha Sundew, is revealed by Felicia in the episode "Ivy on the Run".
Notes[]
- ↑ "The Shut-In!" isn't considered canon for the series.
