Mr. X is a recurring character of Amphibia, serving as a minor antagonist for the first half of the third season. He is a U.S. government special agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation who arrives with Jenny to Los Angeles, trying to capture the Plantars, who are with Anne. Although he does eventually capture the Plantars, they are rescued by the friends they made on Earth as well as the Boonchuys and escape to their home dimension, leaving Mr. X with Anne's parents, who proceed to explain what is going on and apparently scold him for automatically assuming the worst about the "frog aliens" and treating their daughter like a criminal.
He returns as an ally during King Andrias' invasion of Earth with the backing of the U.S. government with the U.S. military to help Anne and her friends fight back against Andrias' invasion force. After the series, Mr. X is shown to have more redeeming qualities, as he willingly provided aid to help Terri create a new interdimensional portal to hopefully help Anne and her friends reunite with those in Amphibia. It's noted that he kept the entire project on the down-low, even to his superiors in the government, as he was wary of the abuse of power such technology could have for Earth, showing a high degree of conscience and morality.
Appearance[]
Body[]
Mr. X is a tall bald man with tan skin and a slender build.
Clothing[]
Mr. X wears a dark purple suit with a light purple tie, a tan pocket square, and a yellow marigold-like flower boutonnière. He also wears white pants and a pair of tan roller shoes.
Additional features[]
He accessorizes with spy black glasses,[1] purple lipstick, a wristwatch on his right wrist, and a yellow ring on his left-hand ring finger.
Personality[]
Mr. X is a flamboyant man that takes his job very seriously. He is suave yet casual, with traces of narcissism. Due to his specialty in dealing with extraterrestrials, he also appears to be somewhat paranoid, instantly assuming the Plantars to be a threat in spite of lacking any actual evidence that suggests so.
He is also shown to have eccentric tendency, as he requests ridiculous demands to his superior in providing outlandish means to capture Anne and the Plantars, such as a Mobile HQ called the "X-Mobile" with features such as a giant pirate sword, shark fin, jet engine as well as other silly features and Kombucha on tap.
He can be arrogant as well, boasting that he can do whatever he wants and mocking Anne by using the fact that she's just a kid just to undermine her confidence, even after being impressed by her skills. As Anne and the Plantars are escaping to Amphibia, he quickly blames Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy instead of reflecting on his actions, leading him to get a scolding from them.
During King Andrias' invasion on Earth, he decides to help Anne and the others defeat and stop Andrias from conquering the Earth due to learning about the real threat.
Background[]
In "Anne-sterminator", the FBI detects that there are sentient frog people on Earth, and they call in Mr. X to investigate.
In his debut episode, the enigmatic Mr. X and his associate Jenny have locked down on Anne and the Plantars. Convinced that they are aliens, the duo, in their disguised ice cream truck, plot to capture them for study. Mr. X and Jenny enter the Thai Go restaurant and inquire Mrs. Boonchuy about the appearance of alien suspects. She plays coy, but they immediately deduce where Anne and the Plantars are headed and leave for Super Cinema 40. Mrs. Boonchuy grabs her husband, and they race after them while trying to call Anne. Unfortunately, her phone is on vibrate, and she cannot hear it due to the loud movie. Upon exiting, Anne is too late to learn that Mr. X has arrived and gives chase throughout the theater. Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy continue to call Anne to try and offer their idea on how to rescue her and the Plantars, but she continues to avoid them and turn down their help, believing she can do it on her own.
Anne and the Plantars find themselves holed up in the restroom as Mr. X calls a SWAT team for backup. Nevertheless, Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy decide to go forward with their plan. They knock out the lights, pull Anne and the Plantars through the vent, and leave behind two regular frogs and a tadpole, humiliating Mr. X who is instead impressed with the challenge and vows to capture them.
In "Hollywood Hop Pop", Mr. X heads to Hollywood after locating Hop Pop through a commercial. He then finds and chases Hop Pop to his audition, only to discover that Humphrey Westwood took the audition instead. After being threatened with a lawsuit by Mitch Harbor, the director, Mr. X calls off the search. Humiliated once again, Mr. X takes off with Jenny comforting him and proclaims he would need lots of ice cream to get over this.
In "Escape to Amphibia", reports of the Plantars' recent hijinks made the FBI realize Mr. X's claims may be true, so he's given far more resources in his pursuit. He manages to locate the Plantars and the Boonchuys in a super store. In spite of their attempts to escape, the Plantars are captured and Mr. X learns Anne's identity, after which he claims she was a worthy opponent but, without her parents, is unable to save her friends. In an FBI base, Mr. X tries to interrogate the Plantars, believing they are aliens planning an invasion, but his attempts fail, with Sprig instead telling him his life's story, and Polly and Frobo messing with him and mentioning a list of Polly's enemies in her world. The Boonchuys, with help from friends the Plantars made, try to infiltrate the base and rescue the Plantars, but Mr. X anticipated this and used the frogs they distracted him with as a decoy to capture them. During another interrogation attempt, the electricity fails, and Mr. X and Jenny go to investigate the failure, only to discover the base's generator was stolen and Anne and her friends and family escaping. He attempts to stop them, and while he fails at first, he manages to install a tracker in their truck, allowing the FBI to track them to Terri's lab just as they are opening a portal. As Mr. X once again taunts Anne by claiming she could never go anywhere without help, she instead responds that there's nothing she can't do with friends to help her. To Mr. X's shock and confusion, Anne displays her blue powers that power the portal they were working on, which Anne uses to bring a giant mantis to Earth and distract the FBI. Once Anne and the Plantars cross the portal, Mr. X demands Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy an explanation, but the Boonchuys instead ask if he is ready to listen to them for once and let them properly explain what is happening, causing Mr. X to realize he is in real hot water.
Shortly afterwards, Anne's parents inform him and the government about King Andrias and the invasion. Now fully convinced, Mr. X and the FBI train them as agents.
In "All In", Mr. X is contacted when King Andrias starts invading Los Angeles. He, Anne's parents, and Jenny arrive to help Anne, Sasha Waybright, the Plantars, Captain Grime, Frobo, General Yunan, and Lady Olivia against some Frobots. They then head to Saint James Middle School to work on a plan to stop the invasion. He starts giving laser weapons to Yunan and Olivia, which Yunan likes. He later assists Anne, the Plantars, Frobo, Jenny, and Anne's parents to take on the Frobot army while Sasha, Grime, Yunan, and Olivia board the Newtopia Castle to shut down the force field. He later witnesses Anne's battle against Andrias, and plays her favorite K-Pop song as a morale booster. When Anne is about to be beaten, he finds the blank letter that Sprig had and discovers it was actually a letter from Leif and that it was meant for Andrias.
Sprig takes the letter and reads it out loud to Andrias, which prompts him to give up the fight and give Anne an upper hand. Later, Mr. X cheers after Anne finally defeats Andrias. He stays behind to clean up the Frobot army's remains with the help of the giant herons while Anne and her friends return to Amphibia with the Newtopia Castle.
After the invasion ended and the permanent return of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy to Earth, Mr. X begin working with Terri to build a fully functional interdimensional portal for scientific purposes, however, hiding it from the government, since Mr. X did not want any nation to have such power because of the possible greed for resources or that they could do the same as the ancient newts; Terri, however, is unable to get the smallest portal to open no matter how much power was fed into it. Terri also start chatting with Marcy so that she can pass to Terri her knowledge of the Calamity Box technology. Mr. X and Terri vow to the girls to continue working on the portal and to inform them if they succeed in opening a path between worlds.[2]
In 2029,[3] Terri calls Anne during her birthday meeting with Marcy and Sasha and tells them that have "exciting news", setting up a reunion with them at the lab for the next day.[2]
Relationships[]
Jenny[]
Jenny is Mr. X's assistant for the FBI. He highly respects Jenny's work as his partner and they can be seen as good friends and a dynamic duo. When Mr. X gets humiliated again after Mitch Harbor threatens to sue him for mistaking Humphrey for Hop Pop, Jenny stays behind to comfort him over this recent humiliation. Jenny then goes with him to get lots of ice cream to get over his second humiliation.
Anne Boonchuy[]
Anne starts out as an enemy to Mr. X when Anne is giving the Plantars shelter on Earth and spends the whole time trying to catch her and the Plantars. After catching the Plantars, he and Anne meet for the first time and he tells her how she cost him a lot of grief and decides not to arrest her and her parents. After locking up Anne, her parents, and their friends, he starts to taunt Anne that she is only a kid and to face reality. When he is about to taunt her again, Anne taps into her Calamity powers and blows him away, which surprises him. He later helps Anne against King Andrias and his force.
After Anne and her friends return, Mr. X decides to help her and her friends to get the portal working so she and her friends can return to Amphibia while keeping it a secret from the his superiors.
