"Reunion" is the twentieth and final episode of the first season of Amphibia, and the thirty-ninth episode overall.

It premiered on July 18, 2019.[4]

Synopsis

During a banquet hosted by the toads, Anne is reunited with a friend from home.[4]

Plot

Beginning with a flashback on Earth three months prior to Anne's arrival in Amphibia, she is seen riding her bike to school. Once Anne puts her bike away on the rack, she is confronted by a bully named Maggie, who teases her for the Thai snack she is eating, calling it a "pukebun." Anne corrects her by stating that it's Khao niew bing (a traditional Thai snack made up of rice, coconut milk, and wrapped in a green leaf) and that her mom made it for her because it's her birthday. Maggie pauses and wishes Anne a happy birthday before attempting to steal the snack from her, only for Anne's friend Sasha to step into the scene and talk Maggie out of bullying Anne with the threat of not being invited to her pool party next week. At this, Maggie then insists that she was just playing and gives Anne her snack back before walking away.

Reunion

Anne and Sasha riding down a hill in a shopping cart.

Once they get to class, Sasha persuades Anne to ditch school for the latter's birthday during a frog dissection lesson, instead visiting arcades, graffitiing buildings, recklessly riding shopping carts, and chilling in a café. Just as Anne is about to head home for her birthday celebration, Sasha receives a message from their other friend Marcy, who found a music box marked with frog designs at a thrift store, as a joke present for Anne, who hates frogs. Anne mentions that she would be late for her parents' party they had planned for her, but Sasha forces Anne to go along with it and caps it off by saying "end of [their] discussion." The girls are seen leaving the café to go meet up with Marcy just as the sun sets above them.

In the present, Captain Grime and his army enter Wartwood, in order to invite the frightened frogs to a banquet celebrating Anne and Sasha's reunion, much to the frogs' surprise. Anne also introduces the Plantar family to Sasha, who claims she thought Hop Pop would be bigger which confuses the elder frog. After Anne gives the okay, the frogs head to Toad Tower in a large party wagon driven by a giant tarantula. While the frogs enjoy the banquet's buffet, Anne and Sasha hang out at Sasha's room. She introduces Anne to the royal treatment she's received at the tower and even offers food such as burgers, fries, pizza, and even ketchup, much to Anne's surprise who had been eating bugs for the past few months. Sasha further claims they have hot showers as well. Sprig, after talking to a nervous soldier, figures out the banquet is a trap and they're prisoners, which he announces to everyone loudly causing the frogs to panic and fight back against the toad soldiers, throwing plates and food at them.

Back in Sasha's room, Sasha explains to Anne that the banquet was to get Hop Pop to the tower, so he can be fed to a giant Venus flytrap, as he became the mascot of a rebellion across the valley ever since the Plantars fought against toad soldiers. When he ran against Toadstool for mayor, he caused rebellions across the valley and many frogs began to stand up against the toads. Anne then leaves the room and tries to rescue the frogs, disguising herself as Sasha and entering the banquet, asking the soldiers to leave as she could handle them. The frogs are overjoyed at seeing Anne and are horrified when she explains the toads' plans for Hop Pop. Wally suggests to Anne that they plant some boomshrooms and blow the castle "sky high," to which Anne disagrees. Anne then proceeds to lead the frogs through the underground sewage to try and find the exit. As Anne and the frogs are making their way down the damp sewage pipes, Wally begins planting the boomshrooms along the way, having misunderstood Anne's statement of not using them. As they find an exit to the sewers, they rejoice only to be confronted by Sasha and the toad soldiers.

As Hop Pop is taken to be executed, Anne tries to get Sasha to free them, but she tries to once again manipulate Anne again. Furious at seeing this, Sprig throws mud at Sasha, denounces her as a bully, and encourages Anne to believe in herself. Enraged by this defiance, Sasha tries to kill Sprig with her sword, but Anne intervenes, standing up to her at long last. Grime then proposes a duel between the girls; if Anne wins the frogs can leave, but if Sasha wins Hop Pop is to be executed as planned and fed to the giant Venus flytrap. With this, Anne and Sasha circle each other, glaring and dragging their swords behind them as they prepare to brawl. When Grime gives the signal, Anne and Sasha charge at each other and begin the duel with a sword lock. Sasha asks why Anne's behaving like this as she had never done so back at home. Anne then manages to swing the sword out of Sasha's hand and it lands a few feet away stuck into the ground, but Anne is confronted with a dagger jab from Sasha who retrieves her sword. After another brief engagement with swords, Sasha throws her cape over Anne's head, blinding her. Sasha then trips Anne and knocks her off her feet.

Sasha Missing Pupils Reunion

Sasha and Anne ready to duel.

Sasha points her sword towards Anne, signaling defeat, and argues that they are just a bunch of frogs that "don't matter." Anne claims they are like family before managing to stand up and thrusts her sword into Sasha's, knocking her down and causing her to drop her sword and dagger, resulting in a cut on Sasha's face. The frogs cheer, and Anne asks Grime if they can leave now as she had won, to which Grime states "I don't think so" before reaching out and grabbing Hop Pop with his tongue. Just as Hop Pop is about to be dropped off of Toad Tower, Wally's boomshrooms begin to explode in the sewers. Anne demands why Wally planted them, to which Wally claims he winked his eye to tell her he thought she was being sarcastic, but he did so with his damaged eye so Anne couldn't tell. The explosions cause the tower to begin collapsing, leading to Grime falling off the tower and dropping Hop Pop, who promptly jumps back onto the roof and escorts the frenzied frogs and toads towards the escape stone staircase.

The End of Part 1

Anne can now progress on her journey back home.

Pieces of the tower begin to rain down onto the ground, crushing the Venus flytrap and causing severe damage to the courtyard. Meanwhile, as Sasha is about to get up, she falls off the side of the crumbling tower screaming, and is quickly caught by Anne who grabs her hand at the last second. Anne too is about to fall before having her leg grabbed by Sprig, Hop Pop, and Polly who hold onto her. Anne tries to calm Sasha, claiming everything will be okay, but Sasha realizes how awful she was when treating her badly and that she will be the cause of their deaths; so, knowing what must be done, she tells Anne that she is perhaps "better off" without her before letting go of her hand and plummeting to the ground. Just as she is about to land, Grime appears and grabs her in mid-air, using his sword to slide down the side of the tower. The tower stops crumbling and remains motionless as Grime angrily glares at Anne before disappearing into the woods carrying an unconscious Sasha, followed by the rest of the Toad Army as they slowly retreat. Sprig walks over to Anne and asks if she's okay, to which Anne replies she is before beginning to sob and is promptly hugged by the Plantars. After getting back to Wartwood, the Plantars apologize that Anne lost Sasha as a friend, but Anne tells them it's okay because she considers them her family and no matter what she goes through, she'll have them by her side all the way until she returns home. The closing shot shows that the mountain passes surrounding Frog Valley have cleared up, indicating that Anne can start finding a way home.

Trivia

  • Viewership: This episode was watched by 0.34 million viewers on its premiere.[2]
  • Aside from the title card, the "Three Months Earlier" caption, the transition after the flashback, and the ending scene, this episode was later uploaded to YouTube on February 14, 2021 as part of a video entitled "Saga of Sasha",[5] although the opening flashback from "Best Fronds", the episode "Prison Break", and the end of "Anne of the Year" play after the flashback.
  • This is the second episode to feature a different credits sequence. The first was "Snow Day"/"Cracking Mrs. Croaker".
    • This is the only season finale whose credits sequence is consistently shown on Disney XD, although it is usually pushed to the lower third of the screen. The credits for "True Colors" do not play due to the sneak peek of Season 3 taking priority, while that of "The Hardest Thing" does not play due to the sequence being four times as long.
  • This is the second episode to use the short opening sequence after "Toad Tax"/"Prison Break".
  • This marks the first 22-minute special of the series, as well as the only 22-minute special of Season 1.
  • This is the first episode to use a licensed song, in this case, the Bill Withers song "Lean on Me"; followed by "All In".
    • This does not count Amphibia's pilot "Amphibiland", which used an instrumental of the Clean Bandit song "Rather Be".
    • Withers would later die on March 30, 2020, almost eight-and-a-half months after "Reunion" premiered, becoming the only person heard in Amphibia to die during the show's run.
      • Withers died exactly seven months after this episode's premiere on Disney XD.
  • This is the second episode to begin with a flashback, the first being "Best Fronds".
  • Grime's line of Sasha "always playing Flipwart when others are playing Bog Jump" is an allusion to the phrase of "playing chess when others are playing checkers", which means that a person is a cunning strategist who is steps ahead of their opponents. The game Flipwart appears later at the end of "Marcy at the Gates" and gets officially introduced in "The First Temple".
  • According to Matt Braly, Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy were originally going to appear in the flashback and have some dialogue in the episode, but the scene was cut due to filming time.[6]
  • Domino is indirectly mentioned on Anne's bicycle helmet, which reads "I ❤ MY CAT".
  • This is the final episode to air in the 2010s decade.
  • This is the last episode to be boarded by Cheyenne Curtis until "If You Give a Frog a Cookie".
  • The frog that Anne is given to dissect resembles Hop Pop, foreshadowing her arrival in Amphibia.
  • This episode marks the first time Sasha is shown wearing something other than her traditional school uniform or armor, with it being a bathrobe back at the tower.
  • This is the only season finale in which Polly does not receive a design change, to not take place in Newtopia, or in which Anne returns to Earth.
  • Running gag: Hop Pop's affinity for hoarding crab legs.

Revelations and significant events

🎶Somebody to lean on🎶

Sasha's suicide attempt

  • This episode started with a flashback of Anne and Sasha during the events before the teleportation, with Marcy being mentioned.
  • This episode reveals that Marcy was the one who discovered the Calamity Box and texted Sasha about it as a joke because of Anne's previous dislike of frogs. This would later be fleshed out in "True Colors" from Season 2.
  • Anne says that she has been friends with Sasha since kindergarten. This would later be shown in a flashback in "The Third Temple".
  • Anne and Sasha getting the top score in Super Dance Fun Time Fusion is referenced in "Toadcatcher" by Sasha.
  • When Anne defeats Sasha, she leaves a cut on Sasha's right cheek which turns into a scar by the events of "Toadcatcher". This scar would be left there for many years to come.[7]
  • Sasha attempts suicide by letting go of Anne's hand; however, Grime saves Sasha before her attempt would succeed.
  • The events of this episode take place at least one week after "Trip to the Archives," as the ending shot shows that the previously frozen mountain passes have thawed out.

Continuity

Errors

  • When Anne is parking her bike in the beginning of the flashback, she does not hook her cable to the bike rack.
  • During the flashback, while Maggie is laughing, her leg appears behind her skirt and black outlines inside. It only occurred for one frame.
  • During the fighting scene, when Sasha and Anne are walking around giving stares, Sasha's pupils appear uncolored for a frame.
  • When Toad Tower is shaking from the Boomshrooms, the scene pans out. Hop Pop is in Grime's hands and can also be seen in the crowd.

Edits

  • In the Southeast Asia broadcast, "Oh, shoot!", "lame", "nerds", "What the heck?", and "Curse you" were cut. However, they were uncut in Thai dub.
