Just because I seem creepy to you doesn't mean that I'm a bad person. I'll have you know, I learned magic to help people, not hurt them. Appearances aren't everything, Sprig.
—Maddie Flour, "Cursed!"

Maddie Flour is a supporting character of Amphibia. She is the older daughter of Mr. Flour and the older sister of Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger Flour, with whom she lives in the Flour & Daughters Bakery. Due to her practice of magic and mannerisms, she is considered strange by the people of Wartwood.

Appearance[]

Body[]

She is close in age to Sprig and is roughly the same height as him. She is a light blue frog with a lighter shaded underbelly and has a red tongue. Just like the other frogs, she has four fingers per hand and two toes per foot. Her hair is a light pink with dark pink spots and bulbous in appearance with a small knot on her head, making it look like a mushroom cap. It covers one of her eyes, but the one that is visible is big and yellow with black, slit pupils similar to that of a snake.

As of "The Hardest Thing", she has grown in height and her hair has now grown to shoulder-length.

Clothing[]

She wears very little; just a black sack dress with a brown rope for a belt and she stays barefoot. While part of the Wartwood Resistance, Maddie sports a few pieces of armor, a black leather glove on her left hand, a red belt on her waist, and a red headband.

By the end of "The Hardest Thing", she now sports a stained black lab coat with a brown belt and now wears tan gloves.

Additional features[]

In "Maddie & Marcy", she's shown with her hair not covering her eyes for the first time, and is shown to have a rather circular head.

Personality[]

Maddie appears eerie, but in reality, she is an understanding frog, though she is merely socially awkward, and she can seem creepy to some people. She doesn't curse others unless they really deserve it and hates people who abuse curses. She talks in a husky, whispering voice and makes those around her uncomfortable with her presence. Whether she does this on purpose or is inept to social cues is not known, but she does try to be on friendly terms with people.

She does seem somewhat self-aware as she acknowledges that some people think she is evil when really, she wants to use her abilities such as magic for good. Most Wartwood residents conceive Maddie as being strange compared to other frogs in Wartwood due to her peculiar habits and interests in magic, but after understanding her deep down one would see her in a very different way, similar to Sprig's encounters with her. She's shown to take her witch occupation very seriously and sees her witch activity as a responsibility rather than a hobby. Prior to the events of "Maddie & Marcy", she prioritized them rather than spending time with her sisters. When interrupted by her sisters she becomes irritable and will angrily yell at them if they accidentally ruin a part of her magic activities. However, Maddie does care about her siblings, and vows to be a good older sister after realizing that she hurt her siblings.

She also likes keeping stuff for herself, such as candy acquired from Barry in "Cursed!".

Background[]

Early life[]

Maddie & Marcy-00862

Maddie learning about magic for the first time.

Maddie Flour is the daughter of Mr. Flour[2] and the older sister of Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger Flour.[3][4] At some point, she became interested in dark magic, and began to practice it mostly. She used to spend time with her sisters, but stopped playing with them when she began to do magic, as she considered being a witch a serious task.[4] Outside practicing magic, Maddie helps deliver for the family's bakery.[5]

Becoming Sprig's "fiancée"[]

The day of the 2019 Pot Luck event, Maddie becomes the "fiancée" of Sprig Plantar after Anne and the Plantars receive dough from her father in exchange for Sprig being engaged to Maddie, in order to make pizza for the event. Later, she and her father go to see the Plantars and Anne while they are in the cage of shame after losing the contest, and there, her father says that Sprig is his son-in-law.[2]

Alastair team vs. Hunter team[]

Hail Alistair

Maddie being part of the Alastair team.

Maddie attends a local theater night in Wartwood, but after an acting troupe cancels their performance due to being eaten, she instead watches a movie called Love Choice on Anne's phone. When a war breaks out among the citizens over who between Alastair and Hunter should be the lover of the protagonist Constance, Maddie goes in favor of Alastair, going to his team, led by Sprig. When Anne and Hop Pop attempt to bring the two teams together by luring them to the center of Wartwood, Maddie and her team fight against the Hunter team where they eventually managed to outnumber them, leaving Polly as the last member of the opposing team still standing. However, instead of letting Polly submit to defeat, Maddie and her team (except for Sprig) throw produce at her, causing Sprig to jump in the way to protect his sister. Maddie mourns Sprig's brief demise as he acts it out before ending the war with the rest of Wartwood.[6]

Asked about Croaker[]

Cracking-Mrs-Croaker00113

Maddie telling Sprig what she thinks about Mrs. Croaker's smell.

When Sprig is looking for information about Sadie Croaker, he asks Maddie about her while at the same time, she is baking buns. Maddie says that Mrs. Croaker smells like wet leaves and fungus, and that she loves it, but she ends up getting distracted and the buns catch fire, to which her father yells that the buns are burning, which gets her attention.[7]

The curse[]

Cursed 81

Maddie is shocked for Sprig's rupture with her.

Sometime after Sprig gets engaged to Maddie, things became awkward around them. Since Sprig does not want to break off his engagement to her for fear of hurting her feelings, Anne attempts to go talk to Maddie and help end the engagement. Upon doing so, she witnesses her baking bread that was shaped like Anne and Sprig, and instead, she decides to write a letter and send it to her. When Maddie gets the letter, she is shocked to learn that Sprig wants to end the engagement with her, leaving her upset.

S1E17A-This trail will lead us to the caster

Maddie telling Sprig and Anne to follow the trail to find the curser.

The next day, Anne and Sprig are cursed, and they believe Maddie cursed them as revenge for breaking off the engagement. Maddie later comes to bring Hop Pop a bread order, and Sprig apologizes for breaking up with her and that it was wrong to have Anne do it. Maddie reveals she is fine with what they wrote, although she would have preferred to have a real conversation with him, and also reveals this wasn't her curse and set out to find the person who cursed Anne and Sprig. While following the trail, Maddie tells Sprig she uses her magic to help people and that appearances aren't everything. They follow the trail to a shack that belongs to Barry, a candy seller who cursed Anne and Sprig for bumping into him and spilling his collection of Blue Moon Berries, and though Anne and Sprig apologized, Barry refused to take the curses off.

S1E17A-Magic battle

Maddie having a magic fight against Barry.

Appalled that Barry would abuse his magic, Maddie states that he should never have cursed someone unless they really deserved it. Since he does deserve it, the two enter a curse battle, and when Maddie runs out of curses, she takes samples of Anne's feathers and Sprig's hair, mixing them together, and then takes Barry's remaining curse and turn him into a hairy bird, returning Anne and Sprig to normal. Maddie refuses to turn Barry back, but Sprig convinces her to, so Maddie agrees to change him back if he gives her some candy. Sprig thanks Maddie for lifting the curse and apologizes for ending their engagement, and the two become friends, albeit with Maddie taking the news in morbid satisfaction.[5]

Anne's party and reunion[]

S1E19B-This is sashimi

Maddie in Anne's party.

Maddie attends Anne's Frog of the Year party, where she waits in line to try some sashimi from Stumpy. However, the sashimi who turns out to be a live mudskipper, wakes up and scares Maddie and the other party attendants away from Stumpy's stand.[8] That same night, she also attends the banquet at the South Toad Tower that Captain Grime and Sasha Waybright organize "for the reunion between Anne and Sasha", although it's really a hoax to catch and execute Hop Pop. However, Maddie along with the rest of Wartwood manage to escape from the Toad Tower and return to the town.[9]

Plantars' return from Newtopia[]

Return to Wartwood-00655

Maddie recognizing the Chicka-lisk.

Maddie is present when Anne and the Plantars return from their trip to Newtopia. Since the town had asked the Plantars for some presents from Wartwood, a party is organized to welcome them and to deliver the gifts. However, since they forgot the orders and not wanting to disappoint everyone, they use a spell book Maddie previously gave Sprig to summon the Chicka-lisk, for him to eat the apparent gifts at the party as an offering. When Chicka-lisk shows up at the party and he is about to eat the gifts, the people in Wartwood don't allow it because of the Plantars' effort to bring them, so they start fighting him.

Return to Wartwood-00727

Maddie returning citizens transformed into stone to their normal forms.

While the town, including Anne and the Plantars, are trying to stop him, Maddie works on an antidote for those who he turns into stone. After Chicka-lisk leaves, the Plantars, seeing everyone's disappointment at not being able to save the gifts, confess that they summoned Chicka-lisk because they forgot to bring them gifts. Everyone is surprised and although they are angry at first, they end up forgetting about it because they missed the family. When Sprig becomes paralyzed after Ivy Sundew kisses him on the cheek, Maddie casts a spell on Sprig to make him react.[3]

New magic apprentice and family problems[]

Maddie & Marcy-00845

Maddie and Marcy clapping palms after collecting some ingredients.

When Mrs. Jonkins asks Maddie to revive her dead pet flea, Fleafy, Maddie agrees and gathers the necessary ingredients from her spell book. As she is about to put the last ingredient into the cauldron, her little sisters Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger Flour arrive since she had promised to play with them, but they make Maddie throw the ingredients somewhere else. Maddie tells them to play the next day, and explains that Mrs. Jonkins is counting on her to revive Fleafy and that the revive spell would be her first level two spell, but ends up boring them and makes them insist on playing, to which Maddie reluctantly agrees, but asks for a few minutes to organize her things, minutes that turn into three hours. Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger end up getting bored and start playing tug-of-war, but end up throwing Maddie's spell at a tree, which makes it come to life; Maddie returns the tree to normal, and scolds her sisters, telling them to go home and help their father.

Marcy Wu sees how Maddie uses magic on the tree, which impresses her since she has never met a magic user in Amphibia, so she goes and introduces herself to Maddie. Maddie recognizes Marcy as Anne's friend and is impressed by Marcy's knowledge of the dark arts, so she asks her to be her magic apprentice and help revive Feafly, to which Marcy happily accepts. Maddie and Marcy collect a few more ingredients before making again the potion, and both have fun while doing so. When they get to Maddie's house, she tells Marcy that she hopes her sisters are asleep so they won't bother her, and Marcy asks her what the problem is with her sisters; Maddie tells her that they used to play all the time, but after she started using magic, she no longer had time for kid stuff, but since then they became very annoying. Marcy asks her if she doesn't think she should give them some time, but Maddie denies it given the responsibilities of a witch.

Maddie & Marcy-01171

A giant Maddie playing with her giant sisters.

Her sisters see how she is having more fun with the "stupid old lady", so they decide to steal one of Maddie's spells so they can grow up and Maddie would play with them again. The little girls take Maddie's spell book, and when Maddie notices and sees how they ruined the book, she gets mad and tells them that she doesn't spend time with them anymore because they are annoying little babies, and takes the book away from them, but doesn't realize that they ripped out the page of the growth spell. The next day, after finishing the revival potion, Maddie and Marcy manage to revive Fleafy, but soon realize that the three little girls did the growth spell, plus Fleafy is crushed by them. The little girls chase Maddie, and when she and Marcy manage to hide, she realizes that they cast the spell so that she will spend more time with her, but that they cast the spell really bad, since they are still growing and could explode because of it. Maddie makes a growth potion for her and asks Marcy to make four antidotes, even though she is not ready for that level. Maddie grows and starts playing with them to calm them down, and soon after Marcy makes the antidotes. The four drink the antidote and return to normal, and Maddie apologizes to her sisters for the little attention she has given them, and the four have a tender reconciliation. At that, Marcy notes that Fleafy survived, but because Maddie and Marcy hug him too tightly, they cause his head to fall off, much to everyone's horror.[4]

Battle of the Bands[]

Battle of the Bands-00545

Maddie and her sisters in Anne's group photo.

When a Battle of the Bands is held in Wartwood after spinning the Wheel of Fun, Maddie attends to it. There later, she poses alongside Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger in Wartwood's farewell photo of Anne, Sasha, and Marcy, as they were to be sent home by King Andrias the next day.[10]

War in Amphibia and joining the resistance[]

Turning Point00356

Maddie fighting a dwarf frobot.

After King Andrias shows his true darkness, mortally wounds Marcy, and Anne and the Plantars escape to Earth through the Calamity Box, Sasha and Grime escape to Wartwood, where they tell everyone what happened, though telling them that Anne sent them to protect them and skipping over the fact that an army of frobots is going to destroy Wartwood for killing them both. The next day, Maddie appears magically in the Plantar Farm to bring them free bread in gratitude for protecting the town, but Sasha runs away from her as she feels bad for hiding the truth to them.

Later, she decides to do so and summons everyone, telling them that in reality Anne and the Plantars were teleported unwillingly, when suddenly the frobots arrive and start attacking them; however, everyone in the town, including Maddie, start defending to both from being killed and manage to defeat the frobots. Everyone forgives Sasha and cheers her on.[11]

Soon after, Sasha and Grime create the Wartwood Resistance against King Andrias, and Maddie joins it, quickly becoming one of its best members.[12] Maddie also becomes the apothecary for the town, running the med bay and is in charge of giving the potions and ointments that heal.[1]

Fighting the Marauders[]

Screenshot 2022-04-02 2.35

Maddie about to turn Barry into a bird again.

Shortly after Anne and the Plantars return to Amphibia,[13] the Marauders steal a load of weapons from the resistance. Sasha then assigns a team of rebels led by Croaker and consisting of Maddie, Wally, Leopold, and Toadie, to fight the group while she and Anne go to retrieve the weapons. Croaker assigns Leopold and Maddie to go with her, while Wally and Toadie are on the offensive, however, Toadie prefers to stand guard as on previous occasions. The team arrives at the base, however, they fall into a trap set by the Marauders to catch them, and although Sasha and Anne manage to escape, Croaker's group does not, but Sasha has faith that they will manage to escape.

Trapped, they discover that the leader of the Marauders is Maddie's old adversary, Barry, who is working for Andrias and plans to sell the group to him at a high price. Croaker devises a plan to escape, and although they narrowly succeed, one of the soldiers, Brian, throws Toadie at Croaker, knocking her out, and although they try to wake her up they don't succeed. Toadie, after being bothered by Brian, brings out a more wild side and leads the group to escape, fighting against the Marauders to do so; when Barry is about to escape, Maddie appears and transforms him into a bird again. The group manages to defeat the Marauders and destroy their base, returning later to the resistance base.[12]

Fighting the king[]

When the Resistance finally goes to fight Andrias and his army, Maddie takes part in the battle. However, when the Core captures Sasha, Anne, Grime, and the Plantars, it declares the Resistance had lost and proceeds to go to Earth to initiate a planned invasion of the place.[14] Despite this, Maddie and the rest of the Resistance continue fighting the Frobot army in Amphibia. Meanwhile, on Earth, Anne and Sasha manage to defeat Andrias and the Core, freeing Marcy from Core's control and declaring victory for the resistance.[15] After finally defeating the Core and preventing the moon from crashing into Amphibia, the girls bid farewell forever to everyone there and return to their home on Earth.[16]

After the war[]

Nine months later,[17] Maddie resumed her normal life, and alongside her sisters who now have grown legs, sets up a potion business, continuing her work as the town apothecary.[16][1]

Relationships[]

Mr. Flour[]

That's my son-in-law

Maddie and her father.

Maddie has a good relationship with her father. Mr. Flour has no problem with Maddie practicing magic and wanting to be a witch, even seeming to allow her to use spells on her sisters, though asking her to return them to normal after she does so, as seen in "Maddie & Marcy", when he tells her to make sure to revive them after she threatens to "kill" them. Maddie also helps her father with deliveries and certain tasks at the bakery.

Rosemary, Lavender, and Ginger Flour[]

Maddie & Marcy-01245

Maddie reconciling with her sisters.

In the beginning, Maddie had an excellent relationship with her three siblings, even playing with them a lot. However, when she became interested in magic, Maddie stopped spending time with them because she took her responsibilities as a witch too seriously, and also began to see them as annoying babies when they asked her to play with them. When Maddie started doing magic with Marcy, they became jealous of Marcy, and in an attempt to get Maddie to play with them again, they cast a growth spell, although they ended up doing it wrong, since they kept growing and could swell up until they exploded. Maddie thus realizes how little time she has spent with her sisters, and after saving them she apologizes to them and promises to be a better sister. After the war in Amphibia, Maddie and her sisters set up a potion business.

Sprig Plantar[]

Maddie and Sprig

Sprig apologizing to Maddie for thinking wrongly of her.

Maddie and Sprig became "fiancées" in "Hop Luck", after Mr. Flour demanded it in exchange for giving the Plantars dough to make pizza. Despite being engaged, their relationship began to become uncomfortable, but he was unable to break up with her for fear that she would do something to him with magic. When Anne helped him break up with her through a letter, they are both cursed, which makes them think it was Maddie, but to their surprise, it wasn't Maddie. Maddie actually took the breakup well, although she would have preferred to have a real conversation with Sprig. Maddie helped them look for the one who cursed them, but while doing so she told Sprig that just because she looked creepy didn't mean she was a bad person since she used her magic to help others, also telling him that appearances aren't everything, which made Sprig feel bad. After discovering that it was Barry who cursed Sprig and Anne, and having him return them to normal, Sprig thanked Maddie for her help and also apologized for how things ended between them, asking her to be friends, to which she accepts.

Marcy Wu[]

Maddie & Marcy-00785

Maddie and Marcy bonding over their shared interest in magic.

Maddie and Marcy quickly became great friends as of "Maddie & Marcy", after Marcy saw her stop a living tree using her potions and bond over their shared interest in magic. Maddie even took Marcy in as her apprentice, as Marcy wanted to learn to do magic herself. Though their friendship sparked jealousy upon Maddie's younger triplet sisters, and when Marcy suggests that she should make time for them, Maddie brushed off the idea as she believed that being a witch was more important. Marcy was proven to be correct as Maddie's negligence led to her sisters growing to gigantic size after she told them to "grow up" and Marcy and Maddie worked together to save them from exploding. Maddie takes Marcy's advice to be a better older sister to them.

Marcy considers Maddie as a "very interesting Wartwoodian", and thinks that she was the first real friend she made during her stay in the town.[18]

Anne Boonchuy[]

Cursed 02

Anne wishing to Maddie a happy market day.

Anne didn't really mind Maddie doing magic, in fact she was even fine with it, even calling her "Classic Creepy Maddie". After she helped Sprig break up with Maddie and they were both cursed, they thought it was Maddie, but it wasn't really her. She helped them find out who truly cursed them, that being Barry, and she also got them back to normal. After that, the relationship between the two continued on good terms.

Barry[]

S1E17A-Epic showdown

Maddie and Barry in a magic fight.

When Maddie discovered that Barry cursed Anne and Sprig, she was offended by Barry's abuse of his power over magic, so she began a fight against him. Maddie returned Anne and Sprig to their normal forms and transformed Barry into a bird, planning to leave him that way because of how dangerous he could be, but Sprig asked her to do it since he and Anne also hurt her, and Maddie accepted, but in exchange for Barry giving her some candy. During the war in Amphibia, Maddie met Barry again, this time as the leader of the resistance's enemy group, the Marauders, and there was great tension between them. After defeating the Marauders, Maddie turned Barry back into a bird, this time without returning him to normal.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Magic: Maddie acquired a great fascination and knowledge for magic, knowledge that grew thanks to her spell book. As a result, she became well-versed in casting spells, using them mainly to help others. At first, she only knew how to cast level one spells, but after "Maddie & Marcy", she began to be able to cast level two spells.
  • Baking: Thanks to her father being a baker, Maddie managed to learn how to bake, as seen in "Cracking Mrs. Croaker", when she is baking some buns.
