~ Loki to Sylvie, explaining he now only cares about her, while trying to prevent He Who Remains' death, to stop a multiversal war. |
Loki Laufeyson is a minor antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe 2019 film Avengers: Endgame and the titular main protagonist of the Disney+ series Loki. He is a variant of the original Loki Laufeyson from an alternate 2012 timeline, categorized by the Time Variance Authority as Variant L1130.
Though the TVA originally intended to have him reset, analyst Mobius M. Mobius intervened as he wanted Loki's help to stop his alternate self, Sylvie Laufeydottir. Much like the original Loki, he has transitioned into more an anti-hero over time instead of a true villain.
Loki later establishes himself as the new ruler of time, by destroying the Temporal Loom created by He Who Remains and restoring the branched timelines to life. At the cost of sacrificing his time spent with his friends, he accepts the eternal burden of becoming the new protector of the Multiverse, saving all countless lives in the process.
Like his original counterpart, he was portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, who also voiced Captain James Hook from The Pirate Fairy and Lord Nooth from Early Man.
Personality[]
“ | Sure. Burn it down. Easy. Annihilating is easy. Razing things to the ground is easy. Trying to fix what's broken is hard. Hope is hard. | „ |
~ Loki to Sylvie. |
Much of Loki's personality remains relatively the same as his original counterpart, up until the point where he is taken by the Time Variance Authority. He retains his cunning, deceitful traits and because he has not gone through his path of redemption, he still comes off as a prideful egotist, who believes he is destined to rule all of the Nine Realms.
Despite this, however, he reveals to Mobius that he is not entirely cruel as he explains to him that he doesn't enjoy hurting people for the sake of it but because he believes it's a necessity as it's part of the illusion. In addition to this, Loki reveals how much he truly cares about his adopted mother, Frigga, as he was shocked and saddened to learn about her inevitable death in the future. He also talks to Sylvie about how his mother taught him to wield and utilize magic. Over the course of the series, Loki falls in love with Sylvie and has come to trust her as his ally, but he has been having difficulty expressing his thoughts and feelings towards her. Eventually, however, he makes it clear to her that all he cares about is her and her safety.
Loki later reveals that a lot of the things he does are partially because of how narcissistic he is and fears of being alone. This is shown when he is put in a time loop with Sif, who manages to bring this side out of him. Likewise, when Mobius told Loki that Sylvie was pruned, Loki pretended not to care but in reality, he was distressed by the news. Later, when Mobius himself was pruned in front of him, Loki was greatly saddened by this as he believed he had lost the one person he truly considered to be his friend.
Loki was initially determined to overthrow the Time Keepers and take control of the TVA as part of his goal obtaining true power but over the course of the series, he has learned and seen the lies of the TVA, finding out that everyone within it are variants that have been kidnapped and brainwashed. Due to this, he has instead sought out to defeat the TVA altogether, with the help of his allies around him.
After learning of the threat of Kang and his variants, Loki sought to reform the TVA to protect the Sacred Timeline from the threat, developing a more optimistic and hopeful outlook and displaying remorse for his previous actions. Loki also finally understood and embraced the change that he had once mocked Thor for when Thor came back from his exile on Earth. Having previously seen Thor's compassion as weakness, Loki came to embrace it himself. While Loki was still manipulative and cunning, he started using those skills for good such as using his illusions to capture Brad Wolfe and playing up his sadism to get Brad to talk in what was essentially a game of good cop/bad cop with Mobius without ever actually intending to harm Brad, instead using his reputation to make Brad think that he intended to harm him. While Loki enjoyed tormenting Brad in this case, it was less of a sadistic kind of enjoyment and more of a genuine enjoyment at having successfully tricked Brad with his friend Mobius.
After the meltdown of the Temporal Loom, Loki sought out his friends from the TVA - Mobius, Hunter B-15, Casey and Ouroboros - who were reset to their previous lives with no memories. While Loki's stated purpose was to stop the explosion, Sylvie got the God of Mischief to tearfully admit that what he really wanted was his friends back, and that Loki feared being alone again. Loki then realizes that he needs to be the one to save the timelines. As such, he time slipped to the time of Victor Timely's death and goes out himself instead, using his magic to destroy the Loom as well as to enchant and revive all the dead timelines. He then embraces himself as the Multiverse's new protector, although Loki was heartbroken to be forever separated from those that he cared about. With this selfless act, Loki truly redeemed himself, forever cementing himself as a true hero.
Biography[]
Background[]
Much of this Loki's background is similar to his original counterpart, where he is the biological son of the Frost Giant Laufey, and was adopted by Odin. Like the rest of the Asgardians, Loki would travel to Midgard and become a legend in Norse mythology, being known as the God of Mischief. During the 1970s, he lost a bet to Thor and hijacked a plane under the pseudonym "D.B. Cooper". After he was believed to have died during his battle against Thor, Loki met Thanos and agreed to work with him to collect the Tesseract and invade Earth. Loki would lead the invasion in New York with the Chitauri, but was defeated by Thor and the Avengers.
Avengers: Endgame[]
Upon his defeat by the Avengers in New York, Loki was apprehended and was taken to a floor to Stark tower where he was greeted by Alexander Pierce. While Pierce spoke with the Avengers on negotiating on the custody of the scepter and the Tesseract, Loki suspected that there was another Tony Stark by the scent of his cologne.
His deduction was correct, as there was another Tony Stark that had time-traveled from the year 2023 to collect the Tesseract to undo the Snap. When the time-traveled Tony Stark and Scott Lang attempted to retrieve the Tesseract, Hulk arrived and knocked Stark unconscious and caused the Tesseract to slide to Loki's feet. Seeing an opportunity, Loki retrieved the Tesseract and opened a portal to escape confinement.
Loki[]
Season One[]
Loki teleported to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia where he was confronted by the Time Variance Authority, an organization tasked with preserving the timeline and stopping variants. The Minutemen informed Loki that he had committed violations, and Hunter B-15 apprehended him after he refused to surrender. Arriving to the office of the Time Variance Authority, Loki was put on trial by the judge Ravonna Renslayer, who revealed that Loki was a variant who wasn't meant to escape from his timeline. Loki admitted that he was guilty of his crimes, but attempted to escape by using his magic, where he learned that none of his magic worked in the office of the TVA. Before he could be pruned or reset, an analyst named Mobius intervened as he wanted to learn more about this variant.
Loki was interviewed by Mobius, who asked him if he enjoyed killing and hurting people before showing him his main self's defeat at the hands of the Avengers and the death of his adoptive mother Frigga. When Mobius was alerted that a variant was killing minutemen, he left the room, allowing Loki to try to escape from the Time Variance Authority. Meeting the employee Casey, Loki asked for the Tesseract, and saw a drawer full of Infinity Stones. Returning to the room where he was interviewed, Loki watched his main self's story of how he atoned for his actions, reconciled with Thor and Odin, and was killed by Thanos to save Thor. He was then attacked by Hunter B-15, but managed to defeat her by using the Time Twister before telling Mobius that he didn't enjoy hurting others. Mobius then told Loki that he wanted his help to stop a variant that was an alternate version of the trickster.
Alliance with the TVA[]
Loki is given new apparel and becomes a consultant for the TVA. He watches numerous videos on the TVA's weapons and purpose. He, Mobius, Hunter B-15 and other minutemen are sent to research an ambush from the variant of himself which Mobius was talking about. Loki tries to get an audience with the Time Keepers inside the tent which the ambush takes place in, however Mobius realizes that he is conning them. They go back to the TVA where Loki researches all the attacks from the rogue variant after being given one last chance. After some research, he realizes that the variant is hiding in apocalypses. He and Mobius test this theory in Pompeii, to find out that Loki was proven right. Mobius then shows Loki some gum and they cross reference the time period in which the gum was sold in with the apocalypses which happened when the gum was sold. After Loki finds out that the variant hides in a Roxxcart shopping mall in the 1950 hurricane disaster of that time-period, Loki, Mobius, B-15, and some minutemen go to the shopping mart. Loki and B-15 find a civilian possessed by the variant which possesses B-15. Loki has a conversation with the variant and proposes a deal, however the variant ends up fighting him and activating reset charges that spread across the Sacred Timeline via Time Doors. When the variant reveals herself to be a female version of Loki, she activates a Time Door to the TVA and Loki follows her.
Fixing the Temporal Loom[]
???
Finding His Glorious Purpose[]
With all of reality at stake, Loki decided to destroy the Temporal Loom himself and then used his own magic to restore life to the branches of the Multiverse. Ascending to a throne in He Who Remains' ruined Citadel at the End of Time, Loki weaved the branches of the Multiverse into Yggdrasil-like tree with himself at the heart of it. Becoming the God of Stories and a weaver of time, Loki finally finds the glorious purpose that he had always sought in protecting and maintaining the Multiverse, but Loki is left in absolute solitude as a result, something that he no longer wanted. It's presumed that, unless someone succeeds him like he did with He Who Remains, Loki will look after the Multiverse for all eternity. Inspired by Loki's actions, however, his friends reshape the TVA into something better, protecting and nurturing the Multiverse rather than pruning it while continuing the hunt for all He Who Remains' variants, proving Loki's sacrifice was worth it.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Frost Giant Physiology: As a Frost Giant, Loki is incredibly powerful and possessing various superhuman attributes common to other Frost Giants and even Asgardian. However, many of these attributes are significantly superior to those possessed by the majority of his race, despite his smaller size. Due to his heritage, Loki possesses the ability to manipulate ice and is immune to cold.
- Superhuman Strength: Like all Frost Giants, Loki possesses great superhuman strength. He could overpower Hunter B-15 in combat and easily contend with Lamentian guards, even launching one through a window with a single kick. Although he was soundly overpowered and beaten by his Variant controlling a larger body, Loki later demonstrated the ability to equally fight with her at the End of Time despite holding back.
- Superhuman Speed: Loki can run and move at great superhuman speed, much faster than any human being. He managed to outrun falling meteors in Lamentis-1, and ran at great speed while distracting Alioth. In "Breaking Brad", Loki quickly catched up with Hunter X-5, despite the latter's usage of the Time Twister.
- Superhuman Durability: Loki's physiology afforded him immense level of durability. He survived falling into the Gobi desert at high altitude with some discomfort, even as the same fall destroyed his chains and muzzle, being soundly beaten by Sylvie Laufeydottir controlling a larger body and being tossed out of a moving train. He even endured magical attacks from his female Variant, a hit from the Time Stick and a woman's blaster on Lamentis, all without significant harm, other than being knocked down. In "Ouroboros", Loki could briefly withstand the Temporal Radiation emitted by the Temporal Loom without spaghettifying, despite having no protection suit whatsoever. In "Heart of the TVA", he was able to survive the explosion of the Temporal Loom, and by the finale of the series, fighting through the increasing level of Temporal Radiation with no harm at all.
- Superhuman Agility: Loki has superhuman agility due to his Frost Giant heritage. He went toe-to-toe with Sylvie Laufeydottir while dodging her blows on Lamentis, or at the End of Time. This included many knife jabs to his face, but he ducked out of the way. He was also able to dodge countless meteors crashing down on him. He later squared off against his own Variants, dodging their attacks as well.
- Regenerative Healing Factor: After the Battle of New York, his wounds healed very quickly. The scar on his nose had healed even before he got to the TVA. His scar on his forehead had also been healed a little later.
- Longevity: Despite being over a thousand years old, Loki still keeps a relatively young appearance and appears to be in his prime.
- Ice Manipulation: As a Frost Giant, Loki could shape and manipulate ice. Like his original counterpart, he would have demonstrated this by freezing the Bifrost in place when trying to destroy Jotunheim.
- Cold Immunity: Due to his physiology, Loki is immune to cold, though he pretended to be cold to get close to Sylvie.
- Magic: Loki learned how to wield Asgardian Magic while growing up in Asgard, thanks to his adoptive mother Frigga. He eventually became an extremely skilled and formidable sorcerer, with it being his main asset in battle. Loki is capable of conjuring objects out of thin air, generating physical illusions and decoy, taking trickery to an advanced level. He is knowledgeable enough about magic to point out the difference between Illusion Creation and Duplication. His magic apparently grew throughout the series, to the point of being able to tear the Temporal Loom asunder and revived the dying timelines in the finale.
- Illusion Manipulation: Loki can generate detailed images from outside himself, which are perceptible in the external world. He would proceed to demonstrate his abilities to Laufeydottir after speaking of his mother's training by creating a small projection of fireworks from his hand in an effort to impress her. Loki can also alter his own body with illusions, seemingly shape-shifting. He could alter his attire, his voice and his physical appearance in order to resemble another person. Loki's shapeshifting could not free him of any restraints placed upon him, as when he transformed into Captain America to mock him, Loki's hands were still bound, although he made it appear that the restraints had vanished using illusions. While hunting Hunter X-5, Loki was able to trick and corner his target by conjuring the illusion of a crowd of aggressive people. Using this ability, he can even render himself and others unseen and unheard to whomever he wanted.
- Replication: Loki could recreate an exact facsimile of his body, which acts as a true holographic mirror of its molecular structure in its present circumstance. Loki better names this as Duplication Casting, which he describes, is different than Illusion Manipulation.
- Conjuration: Loki can materialize and de-materialize objects according to his will. On Lamentis, he caused the Tempad to disappear, secretly transporting it into his back pocket and using illusions to make it invisible. After being thrown from a train, he removed it from his pocket, making it visible to reveal it had been unknowingly destroyed by his fall. In addition, Loki demonstrated the ability to generate tangible items, such as a quill and parchment he was able to write on before making vanish while on a train ride with Laufeydottir, a harness to sheath the sword Laevateinn given to him by Kid Loki, and a green and gold blanket that he could extend to encompass his Variant while the two were in the Void.
- Telekinesis: Loki is able to influence objects and move matter with mere gestures and focus. During his duel with his Variant in Roxxcart, Loki sent a vaccum flying straight into his grip. On Lamentis-1, he used his mind to lift a large piece of a falling building and return it upright, which required immense concentration. He used his telekinetic abilities to pull Laufeydottir away from He Who Remains, dragging her a few feet backwards before she broke free and attacked him in retaliation. By the end of the series (centuries later from Loki's perspective), his telekinetic abilities had grown powerful enough for him to rip apart the Temporal Loom through sheer force of will.
- Energy Manipulation: Loki can project green energy bolts and blasts, allowing him to strike, push, or blow away his targets. The blasts are powerful enough to send an adult humanoid flying and even stun other Frost Giants. During his duel with Laufeydottir, his energy blasts were powerful enough to stop her from going ahead and killing He Who Remains, and in their duel at 1893, their energy blasts were equally matched (although Loki was visibly more overpowered than Sylvie). When combined with Sylvie, their blast accidentally disintegrated some Minutemen and Tempad. As his powers grew, Loki's innate magical energy is now limitless, considering how he was able to accommodate the perpetually growing Multiverse, which was where the Temporal Loom failed as Victor Timely stated that it cannot scale for infinity.
- Enchantment/Mental Manipulation: Just like his counterpart [1]Sylvie Laufeydottir, Loki can enchant his victim by making physical contact and then grab hold of its mind. But this was taught to him by Laufeydottir on the spot to control Alioth. Even before this discovery, Loki was able to subtly influence the minds of others, such as when he manipulated Erik Selvig into researching the Tesseract, making him repeat his words and thoughts as if they were his own. He is also immune to this spell, claiming his mind is "too strong".
- Shadow Manipulation: In "Breaking Brad", Loki conjured his shadows to grow horns and restrained Brad Wolfe, which the latter could not physically break out of despite the shadow's incorporeal nature.
- Teleportation: While unable to teleport himself, Loki demonstrated the ability to do so with other beings, such as teleporting a large man into a pigpen in Chicago's World Fair.
- Timeline Resurrection: By the end of the series, Loki's magical prowess has grown to the point he could revive the dying timelines with a combination of magical energy and temporal manipulation with a mere touch, ultimately rejuvenated the entire Multiverse with his magic. However, Loki also has to perpetually hold his Multiversal Tree to continuously provide it with his magic, as leaving the branches will cause the timelines to start dying again.
- Time Slipping: After the death of He Who Remains, Loki started to time slip, a phenomenon that happens when an individual is pulled through time, and sometimes space. At first, he time slip uncontrollably, appearing to warp away at random intervals. With the help of Ouroboros' past self, Loki learned to control his time slipping by focusing on a person rather than a specific event in time. Loki's time slipping allows him to travel physically or transfer his consciousness to a version of himself within his past, enabling him to travel to critical events in his life and explore any alternate outcomes, such as extending a conversation with He Who Remains or altering the course of history by preventing Victor Timely from fixing the Temporal Loom.
- Time Travel: Through the phenomenon of time slipping, Loki can travel to any point in time to alter and explore any alternate outcomes in the timelines. He could time travel even in the TVA, where it is stated to have no time by Mobius and Ouroboros, making it impossible to time slip in the TVA normally. After mastering the time slipping, Loki could transfer both his body and consciousness into his past self, first demonstrated when he travelled back to before the destruction of the Multiverse. He could even transport himself and Sylvie out of time itself.
- Time Manipulation: As part of his Time Slipping phenomenon, Loki is able to manipulate time on a certain individual or time in general. He describes this ability as moving outside the proper flow of time. He uses this ability to pause time on Sylvie during his many revisits to He Who Remains' Citadel to stop Sylvie from killing He Who Remains as he learned from him what this ability does and what to do with the Temporal Loom. This ability also allows him to bring other people with him outside of time, as did with both He Who Remains and Sylvie. Ultimately, this ability allows Loki to revive the dying timelines, alongside his own magic.
- Spatio-Temporal Lock: As he exists outside space-time, Loki is immune to the effects of spaghettification, caused by either prolonged exposure to temporal radiation or the destabilization of reality. He is able to enter the Temporal Loom's chamber without any protective gear, unscathed.
- God of Stories/Nigh-Omnipotence: At the end of the series, Loki ascended to his throne as the "God of Stories", becoming a cosmic entity whose role is to protect and maintain the infinitely growing branches of the entire Multiverse, which L1130 shaped into the structure of Yggdrasil, The World Tree as a homage to his Asgardian root. With his growing responsibility, Loki's ability has proportionally grown to an unlimited level, as his magic is able to maintain and grow the timelines infinitely, something the Temporal Loom could not do previously.
- Reality Warping/Space-Time Manipulation: Loki was able to revive all of the dying timelines, restoring infinite realities and space-time continuum throughout the Multiverse and allowing endless possibilities to flourish. As he settled into his new throne, Loki was able to grow the entire Multiverse infinitely while shaping it in the form of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. As he ascended to his throne, Loki was also able to create invisible stairs with each of his marching steps as well as opening a rift to the End of Time. During final his conversation with Sylvie, Loki was able to briefly reverse the spaghettification effects that was affecting A.D. Doug's lab, which presumably keeps the surrounding reality intact long enough for the two Variants to hold their final conversation.
- Matter Manipulation: Loki was able to conjure a new Asgardian green robe and a horned crown, built by the same material from the Citadel at the End of Time and He Who Remains's Tempad, after his TVA uniform is destroyed. Notably, both the robe and the crown can withstand the Temporal Radiation without deteriorating through time.
- Cosmic Awareness: As the God of Stories, Loki is implied to be aware of events transpiring across the timelines of the Multiverse, such as Mobius looking at his original life.
- Omniscience: Loki is implied to be aware of and knows everything of all the existing universes in the Multiverse, being able to sense what happen across all timelines.
- Multiverse Manipulation: As he ascended to godhood, Loki' magic is what shape the endless timelines into a new Multiversal Tree that will perpetually grow out. However, Loki's power is also required in order to maintain the Multiverse's existence, forcing him to stay on his throne alone, forever.
- Immortality: As an entity existing outside space and time, Loki has become completely immortal and unaffected by the passage of time any longer, unlike his adoptive father Odin and his fellow Asgardians. Presumably, without interference, Loki will hold the Multiverse in perpetuity.
- Strength Augmentation: Loki's strength is has also been augmented to an unlimited scale, as he was able to hold the entire Multiverse in his hands and maintain its infinity for all time, always.
Abilities[]
- Genius Level Intellect: Loki possesses a high-level intellect, something Mobius was aware of when interviewing him. He quickly deduced the involvement of time travel when he realized that there were two versions of Tony Stark present before he escaped with the Tesseract. During his TVA training, he quickly understood their rules and technology despite his laziness. Mobius later called him "very clever", a statement with which Loki agreed. Loki's history as a trickster allowed him to understand Laufeydottir's methods. As such, he deduced she was hiding out in apocalyptic events due to their absence of variance energy. After spending centuries learning from Ouroboros and presumably Victor Timely, Loki has also gained complete understanding of the Temporal Loom's structure and created a Throughput Multiplier in record time.
- Master Tactician: Loki, as the God of Mischief, is a master strategist and escapologist, and according to Ravonna Renslayer, his file describes him as "unpredictable". He nearly succeeded in conquering Midgard while leading the Chitauri Invasion. When working at the TVA, Loki found it "adorable" that Mobious could possibly manipulate him and claimed to be ten steps ahead of him, an incredibly smart person himself. Using his intellect, the great tactician was able to deduce the tactics his superior "Variant" was using.
- Master Engineering: After spending centuries learning engineering with the use of his Time Slipping ability, Loki now specializes in engineering and is exceptionally masterful at it, having learned everything from O.B. and being capable of inventing a Throughput Multiplier at record time.
- Master Scientist: After spending centuries learning engineering with the use of his Time Slipping ability, Loki's scientific understanding has also expanded to a massive scale, being equal if not superior to both O.B and Victor Timely in this regard. Even before that, Loki was knowledgeable in sorcery enough to point out the specific difference between Illustion Casting and Duplication.
- Expert Investigator: Throughout his work with the TVA, Loki demonstrated himself to be an exceptional investigator. He was able to figure out how Sylvie was hiding from the TVA, and later, tracked down Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes alongside Mobius.
- Expert Combatant: Even though Loki was far more interested in sorcery than Asgardian warrior arts, he was still a highly skilled and formidable hand-to-hand combatant, having received extensive training in unarmed combat as well as having centuries of combat experience. He was also able to reverse Hunter B-15's hold on him and subdue her. While he struggled to defend himself against Sylvie controlling a larger body, he fared better against her when he was equipped with his daggers. Together, they were able to defeat multiple Lamentian guards and Minutemen. However, Ravonna Renslayer was able to get the drop on him and "prune" him by using sneak attack. Later, he was able to easily defeat multiple Minutemen in combat, despite them armed with pruning sticks.
- Knife Mastery: Loki's preferred weapon in combat other than magic is daggers, as he was highly skilled at using them, being able to duel one of his Variants with his twin daggers and great efficiency. He can also throw his knives, although Laufeydottir criticized his lack of accuracy.
- Sword Mastery: Loki is highly skilled at using a sword in combat, being able to use Laufeydottir's sword to great effect against the Minutemen. He was even able to fight equally using Kid Loki's Laevateinn against Sylvie during their confrontation on whether or not to kill He Who Remains.
- Expert Thief: Fitting with his mischievous nature, Loki is an adept pickpocket. He deftly stole Mobius' Time Twister when the latter helped him stand up. He also stole Laufeydottir's Tempad without her noticing.
- Multilingualism: Loki is fluent in his native Asgardian, as well as English and Latin.
