"Quest for Pizza" is the thirty-seventh animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "The Painting."

Plot[]

The Marios arrive in Cavemanland in search of Mugga, a medicine woman who may be able to help them defeat King Koopa. However, before they even come close to them they come across a Mousersaurus Rex, who chases them away. Before they go far, they run into King Koopa, who is riding a pterodactyl-like Birdo and introducing himself as Alley Koop. He hurls his snake staff at the group, and though Mario and Luigi are faster than the snake staff, Luigi trips on a bone and Mario trips over him. The snake staff bites Mario's leg, injecting its venom. Luigi snatches up the now-unconscious Mario, and the group flees Bowser and his spear-hurling Koopa Troopas, only to find a dead end near a waterfall. However, when all hope seems lost, a caveman appears and tells them of a way to escape. While most of the group can't understand him, Toad does.

Behind the waterfall the group discovers Mugga and a band of hiding cavemen. They ask for her help and Luigi claims that he has tried pepperoni cheesecake, meatball sandwiches, garlic, ravioli, and briguto spaghetti to snap Mario out of his coma, but nothing works. Mugga informs him that Luigi must give Mario a pizza to revive him. Unfortunately, Luigi didn't bring any pizza, and there is no take-out in Cavemanland, so they must make one out of scratch.

The group gathers up the ingredients, which is easy enough until Bowser returns. He attacks and chases the group away. For a while, he is baffled as to where his enemies have fled but finds a trail of tomatoes leading behind the waterfall. Unaware of the danger outside, Luigi attempts to cook the pizza over an open fire. However, before the pizza can be cooked, Alley Koop has the Mousersaurus break the walls of the cave, allowing the waterfall to flood it. The fire is doused and Mario cannot be saved.

Fortunately, Mugga knows of a Fire Flower in Cavemanland. Unfortunately, Bowser possesses it, and he knows that they'll want it and has it under heavy guard. Nevertheless, the group heads off to the Fire Flower, traveling in a Flintstones-based automobile. In spite of the Mousersaurus intercepting the group, Luigi manages to get him to release them and they make it to the Fire Flower. Luigi braves a rain of spears to reach the Fire Flower and drives off Alley Koop and his minions. With the fire reignited, Luigi finishes the pizza and holds a slice for Mario. Mario smells it and takes a bite. Now fully restored, he gulps down the pizza and then complains that there was only one pizza.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • At the beginning, when the group is running from the Mousersaurus Rex, Mario's clothes are just red. Luigi's shirt is also green until just before they run into Koopa.
  • At one point Mario yells to the group to escape, but it is Bowser's mouth that is moving. Later, Princess Toadstool's voice is heard coming from Luigi's mouth.
  • When Luigi trips on the bone in the ground, the bone and the patch on the ground overlap Luigi.
  • Koopa discovers the waterfall's secret by finding a trail of tomatoes. However, when Luigi, the Princess, Toad, and Caveboy ran behind the waterfall, they didn't drop any tomatoes.
  • When the Mousersaurus Rex growls in response to Koopa's orders, it opens its mouth a second time but no voice comes out of it.
  • Mario spoke only seven lines, the shortest number spoken by him in the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show."
  • The name of this episode is a spoof on the 1981 film Quest for Fire.
  • Princess Toadstool was not voiced by Jeannie Elias in this episode.
  • A running gag is that the Mousersaurus Rex's keeps getting hurt throughout the whole episode, specifically, getting hit in the foot several times.
  • Alley Koop, a name Koopa called himself in this episode, is a reference to the episode's cover song, "Alley Oop."
  • Princess Toadstool messed up the caveman language throughout the whole episode. Once she thought the caveman kid said something about mashed potatoes, the second when she thought he said something about a bacon and tomato sandwich, then she thought he said something about pancakes and maple syrup, and finally about a banana split.
  • When Luigi looks at his watch, his sleeves are blue rather than Super Luigi's green. In the same closeup and afterwards, the watch is on Luigi's sleeve rather than pulled under it. Then, when he says that they must cook Mario's pizza, the "ring" of his left glove turns gray as the watch seems to disappear under it.
