"Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers" is the forty-third animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "A Basement Divided."

Plot[]

Mario and company are captured and kept in King Koopa's new summer retreat, although it is not explained how this event occurred. The King orders Mouser and a couple Koopa Troopas to throw them into the dungeon. After they get the group into the dungeon, however, a strange yellow liquid drops onto their heads from above. Looking up, they see a wizard who spills a Magic Shrink Potion on them, causing them to shrink to the size of mice. He introduces himself as Waldo the Wizard and explains he plans to use his potion on King Koopa. Toad takes the potion and the group escapes the dungeon.

Back in the patio, Bowser is throwing a barbecue in honor of finally capturing his enemies. However, the group comes up on him and Toad attempts to throw the potion on Bowser. Unfortunately, he clumsily spills the potion on the Mario Bros. and shrinks them instead (hence the episode's title). Bowser then captures Princess Toadstool, Toad, and Waldo and sends his Koopa Troopas to attack the tiny Mario Bros., who manage to escape into a small drainage pipe. Knowing that the Marios will return to save their friends, Bowser prepares a can of insecticide to kill them.

Mario and Luigi are soon chased out of the pipe by giant beetles (whose faces resemble The Beatles). Bowser finds them and starts chasing after them with his sprayer. With nowhere else to go, the Mario Bros. race into the greenhouse. The Koopa Troopas are afraid to enter since there are vegetables in the greenhouse. Unfortunately for the Marios, King Koopa himself isn't afraid of the vegetables and enters the greenhouse. Outside, Waldo mentions that he can make an antidote to his potion if he can just get his hands free. Because they are tied up to wheeled lawn chairs the group manages to wiggle their way to the Koopa Troopas and free themselves. Waldo then makes the antidote, but it must be administered to the Marios.

Meanwhile, Bowser finds the Marios and chases them through the greenhouse. While he's doing this, Toad sneaks up and puts the antidote into the spray gun. After sufficiently shaking the Marios out of a watering can, Bowser sprays them. Much to his surprise, they grow back to normal and grab some vegetables that were also exposed to the growing potion. Bowser and his minions are forced away but Waldo decides it's not enough and creates a flying boot to kick King Koopa as he flees.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • The episode's title is a spoof of the 1989 film, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Since the film was released on the same year as the first airing of every The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode, this makes it the most recent pop culture reference in the cartoon episodes.
  • The Plumber's Log # "19-89" refers to the year that the show first aired.
  • A Koopa Troopa inexplicably turns into a Koopa Paratroopa.
  • Waldo the Wizard seems to spill all of his shrinking potion on the two Koopa Troopas and Mouser but in the next scene the vial is filled again.
  • A flower that is shown to have been killed by the bug sprayer miraculously comes back to life in the next scene.
