"Pirates of Koopa" is the sixteenth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Do You Believe In Magic?."

Plot[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad are sailing over the sea in an attempt to get back to the Princess' castle. The captain of their ship, Captain Clump, expresses great displeasure at the incompetence of his crew and reveals that the only reason he took them on is that everyone else was too scared of the pirate Blackbeard Koopa (King Koopa's alias for the episode) to be on his crew. As the group continues to sail forward, a storm blows in and Blackbeard Koopa (who, despite his name, is rather cleanly shaven) sneaks up on them.

After a short fight with Blackbeard Koopa, the Princess is taken prisoner and the rest of the crew is tied up to the mast, with the exception of Clump's parrot, Patches, who had been blown into the crow's nest during the battle. King Koopa sails off with the Princess, planning to auction her off to the pirate that can steal him the most gold. Meanwhile, Mario and the crew are left in a real bad situation as the ship is sinking and the water is infested with Trouters. The group manages to climb up higher on the mast, but bump into the crow’s nest. Luckily, they manage to wake up Patches, who hits his head and sees stars. Mario then calls to Patches to give him one of the stars. The parrot does so and it becomes a Starman, which Mario uses to power up to free himself, Luigi, Toad and Clump; but because they don’t have super powers, the three fall into the ocean and tries to swim until Mario stomps on the Trouters. Luigi, Toad and Clump swim and Mario helps them climb onto the unsunken Crow’s Nest and they sail off to rescue the Princess.

Back at Blackbeard Koopa's hideout, Pirate's Port, Peach protests to her being sold, but Blackbeard Koopa shows no concern and starts the auction. Meanwhile, the Marios make their way to the port, but Mario loses his Super powers. With no other way to get the Princess back, Mario and Luigi dress up as the pirates Captain Kidder and Long John Spaghetti. They infiltrate the fort and Luigi bids a billion coins for the Princess. King Koopa sells her to Luigi and celebrates his newfound wealth. Taking advantage of the distraction, Toad and Clump free the Princess but are caught in the act. The group flees and after a quick battle, they manage to hurl Blackbeard Koopa into the sea and commandeer his ship.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • Toad's vest occasionally becomes a purple color.
  • When Mario loses his pirate disguise, he is shown to still have his striped coveralls. In the next scene he's back in his red coveralls.
  • King Koopa suddenly gets his coins without anyone ever bringing them to him!
  • Captain Kidder is a spoof of Captain Kidd while Long John Spaghetti is a spoof of Long John Silver. Likewise, the name Blackbeard Koopa is a reference to the infamous Edward Teach.
  • Mouser, Tryclyde, and Clawgrip all make brief cameo appearances in this episode.
  • Oddly, official summaries of "Pirates of Koopa" refer to Blackbeard Koopa as "Long John Koopa".
  • Several of the villains' pirate outfits are recycled from "Rolling Down the River".
  • Mario gaining the Starman through someone hitting his head would be repeated in the Super Mario World episode "Party Line."
  • Just before Mario loses his Starman super powers, he is shown in his normal coloured overalls, then in the next shot his Super overalls.
  • Because alcoholic references are inappropriate for a children's show, Luigi orders milk instead of an alcoholic beverage, though Mario slightly implied otherwise when he wanted Luigi to blend in with the pirates.
